What Causes a Shower Pump to Pulse? Common Causes and Checks

A pulsing shower pump may be reacting to low natural flow, a restriction or air in the system. Learn how to distinguish that from a pump that starts with every outlet closed.

A shower pump that switches off and on while the shower is running may be losing the natural flow needed to keep its flow switch activated. A restriction, air in the system or a mismatch between the pump type and the plumbing can also cause pulsing. The checks differ if the pump starts briefly while every outlet is closed: that can point to pressure loss on a universal or negative-head pump.

What pulsing means—and why pump type matters

Some positive-head pumps use flow switches: they start when water naturally flows through the pipework at a sufficient rate. If flow falls below the pump’s activation threshold, the switch can stop the pump; if flow then rises again, the pump may restart. Pulsing during use can therefore reflect unstable or insufficient flow rather than a failed pump.

Salamander Pumps says that when mixed hot and cold water causes pulsing, either side may not be producing enough natural flow to activate its individual flow switch. It states that its pumps require 2 litres per minute per side to switch on. That is Salamander’s stated threshold, not a universal figure: check the exact pump manual for its requirements. Salamander’s mixed-water troubleshooting guidance and positive-head pump FAQ describe its guidance.

A universal or negative-head pump operates differently from a standard positive-head pump. Identify the pump type and installation before interpreting the symptom or considering a replacement.

Likely causes of pulsing while the shower runs

Insufficient flow on the hot or cold side

If the pump works steadily on hot-only or cold-only settings but pulses when the water is mixed, one supply may not be providing enough flow to hold its flow switch on. The cause could be a supply or installation condition, not necessarily the pump itself. A universal pump may be appropriate in some persistent low-natural-flow situations, but suitability depends on the installation. Salamander’s guidance describes this possible remedy without establishing a model for every system.

A blocked or restrictive shower head, hose or filter

Scale or debris in a shower head, a collapsing hose or a blocked inlet filter can restrict flow. A restriction may also create back-pressure that makes some pumps switch off and on as pressure changes. Stuart Turner discusses this behavior for a standard positive-head twin pump and suggests comparing operation with the shower head and hose removed; if pulsing remains, its guidance recommends checking filters. Follow the instructions for your pump and shower before removing parts. See Stuart Turner’s pulsing guidance and Salamander’s troubleshooting advice.

Air in the system or a supply issue

Air can contribute to reduced or intermittent flow. Salamander’s troubleshooting guidance advises switching the pump off and running water through the outlet for several minutes, then restoring power in accordance with the product instructions. It also identifies cold-water storage, refill rate and venting as installation factors to check. The right procedure depends on the system; do not treat it as a universal instruction for every pump.

An anti-aeration flange can help reduce air intake from a hot-water cylinder, but compatibility and installation matter. Salamander says flange installation should be carried out by a competent, trained installer. Consult Salamander’s flange information and the pump’s installation instructions.

If the pump starts when no outlet is open

A pump that briefly starts while all taps and showers are closed is a different symptom from pulsing during a shower. Salamander calls this “hunting” on a negative-head pump: a dripping tap or another leak can lower system pressure enough to trigger the pump. Check for visible drips or leaks. If the pump still starts during the isolation check described in Salamander’s instructions, low or absent pressure in the pressure vessel may be relevant. See Salamander’s guidance on a pump starting by itself.

Safe first checks

  1. Observe when it happens. Note whether pulsing occurs during use, only when hot and cold water are mixed, or while all outlets are closed. Record the pump make and model if accessible.
  2. Look for an obvious restriction. Check the shower head and hose for visible scale, damage or kinks. Only compare operation with the head and hose removed if the pump and shower instructions permit it; Stuart Turner suggests this check for the pump type it describes. Stuart Turner’s instructions
  3. Check accessible filters only as directed. Salamander advises isolating the pump from the water supply before removing a filter washer. If you are unsure how to isolate it safely, stop and contact the manufacturer or an installer. Salamander troubleshooting guidance
  4. For suspected air, follow the exact product procedure. Salamander advises switching off the pump and running water through the outlet for several minutes before restoring power. Do not assume this procedure suits another make or installation. Salamander troubleshooting guidance
  5. Escalate leaks, electrical faults or persistent cycling. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer for work involving the pump, pressure vessel, cylinder flange or plumbing alterations.

When to consider a different pump

Do not choose a replacement by pressure rating alone. If checks point to inadequate natural flow for a positive-head pump, a universal pump may be a possible solution, but the correct choice cannot be established without the pump model and plumbing details. Compare:
