If you don’t have a T8 screwdriver, the dependable answer is to get a correctly sized T8 Torx bit rather than substitute another tool. No common screwdriver type fits a T8 recess reliably. There are two narrow exceptions: a security T8 bit when a center pin blocks a standard bit, and a small flathead that you may try cautiously on a stripped screw, but only if it catches securely.
Confirm you are dealing with a T8 Torx screw
A T8 Torx head has a six-point star-shaped recess, and the “T8” refers to its size. Before you choose a tool, check three things:
- Drive type: Torx stars look different from Phillips crosses, hex sockets, and slotted heads. iFixit puts it simply: “Different screw heads call for different driver types.”
- Center pin: Some Torx screws have a small post in the middle of the star. If it is there, a standard T8 bit cannot seat, and you need a security version (see below).
- Condition: Is the recess intact, or are its points rounded and worn? The approach for a stripped screw differs from an intact one.
Why a close-enough driver fails
The fit between bit and recess matters more than the bit type. iFixit’s guidance is to compare adjacent sizes and use the largest bit that fits snugly. The table below shows what happens at each fit point.

This is why a flathead, Phillips, or hex driver is not a substitute for T8. None of them has the star geometry, so none can hold a T8 recess under turning load.

Intact screw: use a standard T8 bit
If the recess is undamaged and has no center pin, follow these steps:
- Select a T8 bit and test it in the recess. It should seat fully and sit square.
- Press the bit straight in and apply steady downward pressure throughout the turn.
- Turn slowly. If the bit cams out (rides up and out of the recess) or slips, stop immediately.
- Reseat the bit and try again. If it still cams out, the bit is probably the wrong size or the recess is already damaged.
Center pin present: use a security T8 bit
A security or tamperproof T8 bit has a hollow center that clears the pin in the middle of the recess. A standard bit will not seat over that pin. The Klein Tools 13105 is a tamperproof T8/T15 bit listed for electronics, and Klein states that it is compatible with specified Klein 4-in-1 drivers (Klein Tools product page). Check the product listing for the exact driver compatibility you need before you buy.

Stripped screw: a flathead is a last, cautious try
When the points of the recess are rounded, a standard T8 bit can no longer grip. iFixit’s stripped-screw guide suggests trying slightly different T8 sizes first. Only if none of them catches should you consider a flathead, and then with strict limits:
- Use a flathead that fits the slot width closely and is held firmly against the screw.
- If the bit does not catch the screw instantly, stop. iFixit’s explicit warning is: “If the bit doesn’t catch the screw instantly, do not continue.”
- If it slips at any point, stop. Each slip can deepen the damage and make removal harder.
A flathead is a fallback for a damaged screw. It is not a T8 replacement and should not be used on an intact recess.

Buying the right bit
Choose the bit to match the recess you actually have. The options below are drawn from manufacturer listings.

If you buy a kit to cover multiple screws, confirm the T8 security profile is listed before you order. A kit that lists T8 without a security version will not solve a center-pin problem.

When to stop and call a repair service
- No T8 bit seats fully in the recess.
- The bit slips, cams out, or fails to catch on a stripped screw.
- The screw sits in a device where forcing it could cause a larger failure, such as a sealed enclosure or a fixture with a fragile housing.
In those cases, get the correct bit or take the device to a repair service rather than forcing an approximate tool into the recess.
