A hospital cannot heal a patient through architecture alone, but its layout can support calmer arrivals, clearer movement, better access to daylight and landscape, and more efficient care. Building Design + Construction’s August 11, 2010 account of Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock, Arkansas, documents one project team’s attempt to make those conditions part of the building itself—not proof that the design improved clinical outcomes.

A design strategy, not a claim of medical cure

The Baptist Health Medical Center project treated the building as one component of a broader patient-focused care model. Its administrators and designers paired operational planning with physical cues intended to make a hospital less confusing and less intimidating: views into woodland, water at the approach, daylight along public routes, gardens beside patient rooms, and circulation paths assigned to different user groups.

That distinction matters. The Building Design + Construction article is a project report with comments from the hospital and design team. It does not describe a controlled study, a post-occupancy evaluation, or a measured change in recovery time, infection rates, anxiety, or other patient outcomes. The features below are therefore best understood as stated aims and project decisions.

Starting with a woodland site

Preserving 100 acres

The team selected a 158-acre woodland site, according to the 2010 article, and planned to leave 100 acres untouched. Hospital project manager Dennis G. Hyland said patient rooms and public areas were oriented toward the woods. That orientation made the landscape part of the everyday view rather than a decorative strip at the edge of the property.

Preservation also gave the project a physical identity. Instead of treating the site as a cleared platform for a large institutional block, the design used the existing woodland as a backdrop for arrival, patient rooms and public circulation. The article records the acreage and the team’s intent; it does not establish how much of the woodland remains today or quantify a health effect from the views.

An arrival sequence designed to slow the first impression

Visitors approach an artificial pond and cascade before entering a four-story, glass-wrapped atrium. From the atrium, views extend toward a village green. HKS design director Dan H. Noble explained the intended emotional cue: “When you first come onto the site, you immediately see water, an element that tries to set you at peace and relieve some anxiety.” The wording is a design intention, not a measured finding about visitor anxiety.

The sequence is significant because it gives people orientation before they reach clinical departments. Water, a large transparent volume and a visible landscape can provide landmarks that are easier to remember than a series of anonymous corridors. They also allow the entry to function as a civic space rather than only a security and reception checkpoint.

Patient-focused care built into circulation

Separate routes for different users

The facility is described as a two-story hospital with seven perimeter entrances. Those entrances feed circulation routes dedicated to inpatients, outpatients, staff and physicians. Separating routes does not eliminate every intersection, but it can reduce the number of times patients must navigate staff-only movement or encounter service traffic on the way to an appointment.

The arrangement also addresses a common operational tension: hospitals need to share expensive diagnostic and surgical resources, while outpatients may not want to feel that they are entering an inpatient ward. The article says shared surgery and diagnostic resources were organized to support outpatient care without making outpatients feel they were sharing resources with inpatients.

Decentralizing support around patients

Harrison M. Dean, the hospital’s senior vice president and administrator, described the operating model behind the plan: “Patient-focused care as an organizing concept is not widely practiced in traditional hospitals; you have to cross-train staff and decentralize technology to the patient.” In practical terms, that means the floor plan is only one part of the change. Staffing patterns, training and the location of equipment must support the shorter trips and clearer patient contact that the plan seeks.

For a new project, the useful test is not whether a plan contains a dedicated door for each group. It is whether the clinical workflow, departmental adjacencies, elevators, registration points and emergency routes all reinforce the intended separation without creating extra travel for staff or confusing detours for patients.

Planning for expansion and choosing a structural frame

Horizontal and vertical growth

Hyland said, “The building is sited so that we can add modules horizontally, and structurally designed to add more floors.” This is a resilience strategy: reserve land and structural capacity at the beginning so future services can be added without rebuilding the entire campus.

Expansion-ready planning has consequences for foundations, columns, floor-to-floor heights, shafts, loading, fire compartments and utility capacity. A hospital that appears flexible on a drawing can still be difficult to extend if mechanical rooms, electrical distribution or infection-control barriers were not sized for the next phase. The article reports the team’s intent, not a later demonstration that additions were made successfully.

Why this team selected concrete

The project team compared a concrete frame with structural steel. Hyland’s concern was the perceived movement, or “bounce,” of steel systems in operating rooms. Project structural engineer H. Frank Yin, of HKS, offered a qualified comparison: “Structural steel would have been easier to detail and design, but for fire resistance, performance and cleanliness, concrete is sometimes better.”

Those comments describe a project-specific judgment, not a universal rule that concrete is preferable in every hospital. Steel can offer detailing, speed and design advantages; concrete can provide mass, stiffness and inherent fire resistance. The appropriate choice depends on span lengths, vibration criteria, construction sequencing, local labor, seismic or wind demands, fire strategy, cost and the future expansion plan. Any current project needs a contemporary structural and code analysis rather than copying the 2010 decision.

Electrical resilience and operating-room airflow

Spot network arrangement

The article describes a spot network with two 2,500-kilovolt-ampere transformers and normally closed ties. Project engineer Herb Jenkins said that if one transformer or primary feed failed, the other transformer would pick up the load. In a hospital, that arrangement is intended to limit the effect of a single upstream failure on critical services.

The figures are historical descriptions of Baptist Health’s installation as reported in 2010. They are not current electrical requirements, a guarantee of uninterrupted power, or a specification that can be transferred to another facility without a load study, utility review, emergency-power analysis and applicable codes.

Laminar airflow hoods in operating rooms

The operating rooms are described as using laminar airflow hoods. The article reports up to 80 air changes per hour and describes 25 to 30 air changes per hour as the standard used for comparison at the time. Both numbers belong to that project account and date. They should not be presented as a present-day universal standard or as evidence that the rooms achieved a particular infection rate.

Current operating-room ventilation design must be checked against the adopted mechanical, health-care and infection-control requirements for the project’s jurisdiction. Designers also need to coordinate pressure relationships, filtration, temperature, humidity, noise, maintenance access and commissioning; an air-change number by itself does not describe system performance.

Gardens, verandas and a deliberately restrained interior

Patient rooms connected to themed gardens

Patient rooms were arranged in three pods and opened toward verandas or porches facing themed healing gardens. The arrangement gives patients a nearby outdoor reference point and gives visitors an alternative to waiting in an enclosed corridor. Noble summarized the landscape relationship this way: “The gardens work with the architecture … and parts of the building turn into elements of landscape.”

The phrase “healing garden” describes the role assigned to the landscape in the design. The article does not report patient-use counts, viewshed studies or clinical measurements showing that the gardens changed outcomes. A contemporary team would need to decide how patients, families and staff can actually reach and use the gardens, including shade, seating, accessibility, security, weather protection and maintenance.

Materials, color and visual cues

The exterior used materials the article calls indigenous, including split-face block made from native mortar and clays. Aluminum panels marked the entry points. Inside, the project used a muted palette with selected color accents, terrazzo and linoleum flooring, and cherry-stained ash doors and paneling in the lobby.

Windows and natural light were intended to act as visual cues along public routes. In a large hospital, daylight can help people distinguish a public edge from a back-of-house corridor, while color accents can identify destinations. Those benefits depend on glare control, reliable wayfinding, nighttime lighting, cleaning requirements and whether the cues remain legible for people with visual or cognitive impairments.

How the main decisions fit together

Design decision Intended contribution What the 2010 account establishes
158-acre woodland site with 100 acres left untouched Connection to nature and long-term landscape identity Reported site and preservation plan; no measured clinical effect
Pond, cascade, glass atrium and village-green view A calmer, more legible arrival sequence Design intent described by project participants
Seven perimeter entrances and dedicated user routes Clearer movement for inpatients, outpatients, staff and physicians Circulation strategy reported; no travel-time evaluation
Three patient-room pods with verandas and themed gardens Immediate landscape access and visual relief Feature described; no outcome measurement
Concrete frame with capacity for added floors Stiffness, fire-performance considerations and future growth Team rationale reported; not a universal structural recommendation
Spot network with two 2,500-kilovolt-ampere transformers Continuation of load after a transformer or primary-feed failure Historical project configuration; not a current requirement
Operating-room laminar airflow hoods High air movement intended for the operating environment Up to 80 air changes per hour reported, with 25–30 described as standard at the time

What this case can—and cannot—tell a project team

The case is most useful as a map of decisions that must be coordinated. Landscape is not an afterthought if the site, patient-room orientation, entry, public circulation and gardens are planned together. Patient-focused care is not achieved by a floor plan alone if staffing and technology remain centralized. Flexibility is not simply an empty zone if the structure and utilities cannot support the next building phase.

It is equally important not to overstate the evidence. Building Design + Construction’s August 11, 2010 article names no independent study and provides no clinical outcome statistic for Baptist Health Medical Center. It cannot establish faster recovery, lower infection, reduced anxiety or better satisfaction. Present conditions at the hospital and current codes are also outside the article’s scope.

A practical checklist for a new healing-oriented hospital

  1. Define the care model first. Map who needs to move, which staff are cross-trained, where technology should be located and which resources can be shared.
  2. Protect meaningful landscape. Identify trees, views, shade, stormwater paths and accessible outdoor destinations before fixing the building footprint.
  3. Design the arrival as orientation. Use visible landmarks, daylight and clear transitions so a first-time visitor can understand where to register and where to go next.
  4. Separate circulation deliberately. Test inpatient, outpatient, staff, physician, service and emergency routes for conflicts, travel distance and after-hours access.
  5. Reserve expansion capacity. Coordinate structural grids, foundations, shafts, fire compartments, utilities and site access for both horizontal and vertical additions.
  6. Document engineering assumptions. Record the basis for structural vibration, fire resistance, electrical redundancy, ventilation, pressure relationships and maintainability decisions.
  7. Make gardens usable. Provide accessible paths, seating, weather protection, sightlines, security and a maintenance plan rather than relying on views alone.
  8. Validate the result after opening. Measure wayfinding, staff travel, equipment response, energy use, maintenance issues and user experience instead of assuming that an intended benefit occurred.

The central lesson

Baptist Health Medical Center’s design shows how a hospital can make landscape, daylight, circulation and operational planning part of one architectural brief. Its woodland setting, atrium, separated routes, expansion strategy, structural choice and engineering systems were selected to support a particular model of care. They remain a documented example of design intent—not proof that a building itself heals the sick.
