Artificial intelligence is driving a real wave of physical investment in data centers, electrical infrastructure, generators, factories and specialized construction. But the Fox Business clip titled “We’re seeing a construction boom with AI: Tomas Philipson,” published October 26, 2026, does not provide a transcript, so Philipson’s exact argument cannot be verified from the page alone. The clip features Philipson, a former acting chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, in a discussion with Taylor Riggs. Its description also references President Donald Trump’s claim that Audi will build a Georgia factory producing 200,000 cars a year and notes that the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.004% ahead of a Federal Reserve meeting. Those details provide economic context, not proof that the factory or a specific AI-led construction total has been independently confirmed.

Is AI causing a construction boom?

AI is contributing to a construction boom by turning demand for computing into demand for buildings, substations, transmission capacity, backup generation, cooling systems and industrial supply chains. The strongest evidence is physical: data-center campuses are being planned and built, while contractors and utilities face unusually large power and delivery requirements. That broader trend supports the headline’s premise, but it should not be presented as a verbatim statement from Tomas Philipson because the Fox Business page publishes no transcript.

What the Fox Business item actually says

Fox Business lists the item as a short video dated October 26, 2026, with Philipson joining Taylor Riggs. The publisher description says the segment examines Trump’s claim about an Audi plant in Georgia with annual output of 200,000 vehicles and the 10-year Treasury yield reaching 5.004% before a Federal Reserve policy meeting. The 200,000-vehicle figure is therefore a claim reported in the description, not an independently verified production result established here.

What remains unknown

Without a transcript, viewers cannot reliably separate Philipson’s own words from the host’s framing, identify the data he cited, or determine whether “construction boom” referred narrowly to data centers, to U.S. capital spending generally, or to a particular regional project. Any account of his precise wording would go beyond the available evidence.

How are data centers driving construction?

AI services require concentrated computing capacity. That creates work well beyond the server hall itself: land development, foundations, structural steel, high-voltage equipment, substations, cooling plants, fiber connections, roads and backup power. A 2025 interview summary with Sequoia Capital partner David Cahn describes this shift from abstract models and computing capacity toward “data centers, power, generators, supply chains, and construction.”

Cahn’s framing is that investors should think “in an atom’s perspective about AI,” meaning the physical inputs that make software possible. The summary records his observation that generators were sold out to 2030 and his remark, “We moved from dollars to gigawatts – Sam Altman’s not talking about dollars anymore.” These are Cahn’s observations, not quotations from Philipson or forecasts that every planned project will be completed.

Why one project can have an outsized footprint

Construction reporting from New York Build 2026 says a hyperscale facility can require more than 1,000 megawatts at one site. Supplying that load may require new substations, transmission upgrades, on-site generation and long-lead electrical gear. The result is a multi-year infrastructure program rather than a conventional commercial-building job.

What is constraining the AI buildout?

The opportunity is large, but projects can stall when power, approvals, skilled labor or reliable information are missing. Construction Dive’s reporting on New York Build 2026 identifies six practical constraints.

  • Power availability: Grid connections and generation capacity can take longer than the building shell. A facility cannot operate at its planned scale until dependable power is contracted and delivered.
  • Permitting and community acceptance: Local opposition, noise, water use, land impacts and traffic can delay or reshape a campus even when financing is available.
  • Labor capacity: Electrical, mechanical, controls and commissioning specialists are in high demand. Hiring shortages can turn an aggressive schedule into a sequencing problem.
  • Delivery speed: Prefabricated electrical and mechanical assemblies can help meet data-center schedules, but they require early design decisions, factory capacity and disciplined logistics.
  • Project data: Poor or inconsistent information makes coordination harder across owners, designers, trade contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Economic quality: Announced capacity is not the same as productive capacity. Spending creates durable economic value when a completed facility attracts paying workloads and operates reliably; speculative space or delayed projects have a different GDP effect.

What does the buildout mean for contractors and electricians?

For contractors, AI infrastructure expands the market for high-voltage distribution, substations, generators, cooling, fire protection, controls, commissioning and prefabrication. It also raises the standard for coordination: a late change to a transformer, switchgear lineup or cooling design can affect procurement, installation and energization across the site.

Capabilities that matter

  • Experience with medium- and high-voltage systems, utility interconnection and protection equipment.
  • Procurement plans for transformers, switchgear, generators and other long-lead components.
  • Digital models and shared project data that keep architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical teams aligned.
  • Prefabrication and modular assembly where repeatable rooms, skids or racks can be built off-site.
  • Commissioning expertise, because a data center must prove redundancy, controls and failover before it can support production workloads.

Is the AI boom showing up in GDP through construction?

It can, because construction spending, equipment purchases and utility investment are recorded as economic activity while projects are built. The longer-term contribution depends on whether those assets generate operating revenue, productivity and employment after completion. A high volume of announcements or capital commitments does not by itself establish a measured GDP gain.

The Fox Business description’s 5.004% 10-year Treasury yield is relevant because financing costs influence the economics of factories, data centers and grid projects. A higher long-term yield can raise the cost of carrying a project and change which sites or phases are financially viable; it does not, on its own, confirm that construction demand is rising or falling.

How should readers interpret the Audi and AI references together?

The Audi reference illustrates a broader manufacturing-and-infrastructure investment story, while the AI discussion points to data-center and power-system construction. They may appear in the same economic conversation, but they are not interchangeable evidence. The Audi output number remains a claim in the Fox Business description, and the clip supplies no project documents or independent verification in the available material.

Indicator What is established How to read it
Audi Georgia output 200,000 vehicles annually, as described by Fox Business Reported claim, not independently verified here
10-year Treasury yield 5.004% before a Federal Reserve meeting, according to Fox Business Financing context for capital-intensive projects
Hyperscale power demand More than 1,000 megawatts at one site, cited in Construction Dive’s New York Build 2026 reporting Shows the scale of grid and generation work
Generator availability Generators described as sold out to 2030 in a summary of David Cahn’s 2025 interview Signals supply-chain pressure; it is not a Philipson quotation

What should be watched next?

Useful confirmation will come from utility interconnection agreements, permits, equipment orders, financing close dates and construction starts—not just announcements. For an individual market, track available megawatts, transmission upgrades, local approval conditions, contractor backlogs and whether tenants have committed workloads. Those measures distinguish a buildable project pipeline from speculative capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find a transcript of Tomas Philipson’s Fox Business appearance?

The Fox Business listing identified for October 26, 2026 is a short clip page and does not publish a transcript. Until a transcript or full recording is released, Philipson’s exact wording and supporting data cannot be quoted reliably.

Why do AI data centers need so much electricity?

Large clusters of processors run continuously and require cooling, networking and redundant power systems. Their demand is concentrated at individual campuses, so local substations, transmission and backup generation can become limiting factors even when a region has ample electricity overall.

What construction trades are most exposed to data-center growth?

Electrical, mechanical, controls, commissioning, structural and prefabrication trades are central to these projects. Firms that can manage utility interfaces, long-lead equipment and integrated digital coordination are better positioned than those relying only on conventional building-shell work.

Does a planned data center automatically increase local GDP?

Construction spending can raise measured economic activity while a facility is being built, but the lasting effect depends on completion, operation and paying demand for the capacity. Delays, cancellations or unused space produce a weaker outcome than an operating campus.
