Welder Conversion: What Can—and Cannot—Be Changed

Welder conversion can mean changing gasless wire feed to gas MIG, adding a welding process, or adapting MIG-gun consumables. Compatibility depends on the exact model.

“Welder conversion” can mean several different jobs: changing a compatible gasless wire-feed welder to gas-shielded MIG, adding a different welding process, or adapting the consumables on a MIG gun. Whether any conversion is possible depends on the exact machine or gun model and the intended change. Sealey documents a gas conversion for specific SUPERMIG 130 and 150 models; that does not mean other welders can be converted the same way.

First, identify what you want to convert

Before buying a conversion kit, write down the welder’s exact make and model, the process you want to use, and—if the change involves wire—the wire material and diameter. Check the manual or ask the manufacturer to confirm compatibility for that exact model.

  • Gasless wire-feed to gas-shielded MIG: A documented conversion exists for the Sealey SUPERMIG 130 and 150 covered by their manuals.
  • One welding process to another: A new torch or lead alone does not establish that a machine can support TIG, stick, AC TIG, or pulse welding. The power source and controls must support the intended process.
  • MIG-gun consumables: Some kits adapt the parts fitted to a particular gun. That changes the gun’s consumables, not the welder’s process.

Converting a compatible Sealey gasless welder to gas

The Sealey SUPERMIG 150 instructions state: “For welding stainless steel or aluminium, this welder can be converted to a conventional mig welder.” The SUPERMIG 130 manual gives materially similar guidance. These instructions apply to the covered models, not to gasless welders generally. See the Sealey SUPERMIG 150 and SUPERMIG 130 manuals for the full model-specific procedure and specifications.

Parts and checks named in the manuals

For the covered models, Sealey specifies regular wire, a suitable shielding-gas bottle, compatible tips and nozzles, and conversion kit 120.802032. The manual describes the kit as containing a regulator, connection hoses, a hose adaptor, and clips. It also directs users to match the drive-roll groove to the wire and check the machine’s polarity for gas operation.

Polarity and setup

The manual’s sequence includes disconnecting the machine from mains power before opening the side panel to check polarity. For gas operation on the covered machines, it specifies the torch lead positive and the work/earth lead negative. Do not apply that polarity arrangement to a different welder without checking its manual.

The manuals also give material-specific wire and gas guidance. For example, they refer to argon and 0.8 mm aluminium wire and contact tip for aluminium. Those details are not universal recommendations: use only the wire, gas, tips, nozzles, and settings specified for the exact machine and job.

Gas-cylinder and regulator precautions

Sealey warns against over-tightening the regulator because compressing its sealing washer too much may cause a slow gas leak. Follow the exact manual for cylinder mounting and connections, and observe applicable gas-supplier instructions and local cylinder-handling requirements. Ensure the work area is appropriately ventilated and the machine is electrically isolated before carrying out any steps that require opening it.

If you want to add TIG, stick, or another process

Do not assume that changing a torch, lead, or accessory converts a single-process welder into a machine capable of another process. Check the exact model’s supported processes, power-source design, rated output, controls, polarity requirements, and compatible accessories. If the manufacturer does not confirm support for your intended process, treat compatibility as unestablished.

Purpose-built multiprocess machines show why model-level checking matters. Miller’s Multimatic family has different process combinations by model, including varying mixes of MIG/flux-cored, DC stick, DC TIG, and—in some models—AC TIG or pulsed processes. ESAB describes its Rebel EMP 205ic AC/DC as supporting MIG, flux-cored, stick, DC TIG, and AC TIG. These examples describe those products; they do not show that an existing single-process machine can be converted.

If you are comparing a replacement or multiprocess machine, verify the current specifications for the exact model. Check:

When “conversion kit” means MIG-gun parts

A MIG-gun conversion kit may adapt the consumables on a torch without changing the welding process. USA Weld/HTP lists a kit for Hobart Piecemaker 14A and Miller 10A MIG guns, including contact tips, a tip adapter, and a nozzle. The listing notes that certain original parts have been discontinued and that replacing the liner requires buying a complete replacement gun. Confirm the exact gun model and wire diameter against the listing before ordering: this is not a welder process-conversion kit.

Before buying a kit

  1. Find the exact welder or MIG-gun make and model from its label or manual.
  2. State the target change precisely: gas-shielded MIG, another welding process, or different gun consumables.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s manual or product information for that exact model and the required parts.
  4. Confirm wire material and diameter, shielding-gas requirements, polarity, and any accessory compatibility the manual specifies.
  5. If the manual does not document the conversion, contact the manufacturer or an authorized welding supplier before buying parts or attempting the change.
