If your Weil-McLain Ultra boiler is showing a message, has a blank display, or will not fire, the fastest route to an answer is to match what the boiler shows to the manual for your exact model and series. “Ultra” covers more than one generation, and the same message or symptom can mean different things on each. Treat the displayed message as a clue that points you to the right manual section, not as a complete diagnosis.
Start with your model, not the message
Before you change anything, write down three things: the complete text of any message on the display, the model and series shown on the rating label, and the date the problem first appeared. Whether the problem came back after a reset matters as much as the message itself.
The manufacturer’s product page lists Ultra Series 4 as its current gas-fired boiler line, in sizes Ultra-80, 105, 155, 230, 299 and 399, and links product manuals for each. The page also advertises up to 94% AFUE for the line. That is a manufacturer-reported figure, not an independent test result, and the page’s model table shows different AFUE values by size. Do not read “up to 94%” as the rating for every model.
The Series 4 troubleshooting material referenced here is the Ultra Series 4 gas-fired water boiler manual, revision 550-100-440/0723 (a July 2023 revision). Check whether a newer revision is posted for your boiler before you follow any step from it. Weil-McLain also keeps legacy Ultra documentation, so an older boiler may need a different manual entirely.

Safe checks you can make without opening the boiler
These observations do not require removing a panel, touching wiring or taking readings. They help you describe the problem accurately to a technician.
- Record the full display text exactly as it appears, including punctuation and temperature units.
- Check whether the thermostat is calling for heat. A boiler that receives no heat demand will not fire.
- Note whether any other boiler component is running, such as a circulator. Whether the display is blank while other parts run changes which manual section applies.
- Confirm the service switch and the circuit breaker feeding the boiler are in the on position, as an observation only. Do not operate the switch repeatedly to force a reset.
- Look for the model and series on the rating label so you can find the matching manual before calling for service.
Blank display: two different problems
A blank display can mean the control is not receiving power, or that power is present but the display has lost contact with the control. The Series 4 manual separates these cases, and they call for different work.
Blank display with no other components operating
The Series 4 manual states that the control is not receiving 120 V. Its diagnostic table starts by confirming that the service switch and circuit breaker are on. Beyond that point, the steps involve voltage checks at the service switch and the line-voltage terminal block, the boiler’s power switch behind the control pod, and a 12-amp fuse. Those are technician tasks that involve energized equipment.

If a fuse is found blown, the manual calls for a replacement of the proper rating and says to investigate the wiring if the fuse blows again. Replacing the fuse repeatedly without finding the cause is not a fix.

Blank display while the boiler operates
In this case the manual attributes the condition to lost communication between the U-Control and the display. The technician steps listed are checking plug alignment and connections, checking harness continuity, cycling power, and replacing the display module if needed. These involve internal controls and wiring, so they belong to a qualified service technician.
Series 4 messages and how they reset
The following entries come from the Series 4 manual. They apply to Series 4 boilers only. Other Ultra generations may use different thresholds, reset rules and corrective steps.

TEMP RISE TOO QUICKLY
The manual defines this message as supply-water temperature rising faster than 2°F per second during the first two minutes of burner operation. The condition resets automatically after a one-minute delay, or it can be reset manually. After five automatic resets during the same priority heat demand, a manual reset is required.
The corrective checks listed for this message are technician checks: verifying the primary and secondary piping arrangement and confirming that the circulator is sized correctly. The manual gives minimum pipe sizes that vary by boiler size, and those figures should be taken only from the manual for your own model.
SUPPLY 58F > RETURN
This message appears when the boiler outlet temperature exceeds the inlet temperature by more than 58°F while the burner is on. The manual describes a 30-second automatic reset or a manual reset. Its recommended checks are the same category as above: primary and secondary piping, minimum pipe sizes and circulator sizing. If the message returns after a reset, call for service rather than resetting again.

Gas-valve, pressure-switch and expansion-board messages
The manual lists gas-valve output and pressure-switch or expansion-board messages. Their behavior and corrective action depend on the boiler configuration. The manual also states that certain pressure and expansion-board messages do not correspond to components used on residential Ultra boilers, and it directs the technician to compare the boiler size selected in the U-Control against the rating label for several of these conditions. For that reason, a generic “replace this part for this code” list is not reliable for these messages. Matching the message to the model and configuration is essential.
Who does what
The table below separates the checks a homeowner can safely observe from the checks that belong to a technician.
| Check or action | Homeowner | Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Record the exact display message and model/series | Yes | Yes |
| Confirm thermostat is calling for heat | Yes | Yes |
| Confirm service switch and breaker are on (observation only) | Yes | Yes |
| Voltage and continuity measurements (the manual calls for a digital multimeter in some paths) | No | Yes |
| Access the control pod, fuse, or terminal block | No | Yes |
| Check piping arrangement, pipe sizes and circulator sizing | No | Yes |
| Replace display module, harness or fuse | No | Yes |
| Reset after a message | Once, per the manual’s reset rule for that message | Yes, and investigate if the message returns |
Legacy and older Ultra boilers
Everything in the Series 4 sections above is specific to that series. Do not apply its fault names, wiring locations, reset counts or pipe sizes to an older Ultra. Weil-McLain maintains legacy product support listings and Ultra-specific training resources, which are the right place to start for an older unit. Locate the rating label first, and then find the manual that matches that model.

When to stop and call a licensed technician
- The message returns after a reset, or a manual reset is required.
- The display is blank and no other boiler components are operating.
- A fuse blows, or it blows again after replacement.
- Any step in the manual calls for an energized measurement or access to the control pod.
- You smell gas. Leave the area, avoid operating electrical switches, and call your gas utility or emergency number from outside.
Replacement parts such as a control board, gas valve, sensor, fuse or circulator should be chosen only after diagnosis and with the boiler model and serial information in hand. A part that fits one message or size may not fit another.
