A soothing water garden starts with the right scale and purpose: a planted container, a wildlife-friendly pond, a waterfall feature, or a pond designed for fish each calls for different space, equipment, and care. Choose the site and basin before digging, then plan plants, circulation, drainage, and safety around the conditions in your yard.

Decide what kind of water garden you want

Start with the experience you want and the maintenance you can take on. A small container can bring water and plants to a compact patio; a planted pond can make room for more aquatic plants and wildlife; a waterfall adds moving water; and a fish pond brings additional requirements for volume, depth, circulation, and care. These are different designs, not interchangeable versions of a koi pond.

Basin type Scale and digging Shape flexibility Installation considerations
Large tub or container Compact; no excavation required Limited to the container’s shape A practical starting point for a small feature; manage standing water and mosquitoes.
Preformed pond Usually requires excavation to fit the basin Fixed shape Plan the excavation and placement before setting the basin.
Flexible liner Excavated basin; can accommodate a range of sizes Most adaptable to a planned shape Prepare the basin and leave enough liner at the edge to secure it. Kansas State University Research and Extension advises an 18- to 24-inch overlap margin.

University of Florida IFAS identifies rubber liners, preformed ponds, and large tubs as accessible water-feature options. The sources do not establish comparable installation costs, so choose based on the site, size, shape, and amount of excavation you are prepared to do.

How do I choose a site and prepare to build?

Place the feature where you can see and enjoy it, such as near a patio. UF/IFAS recommends some shade to help curb algae while retaining enough light for the selected plants. Kansas State’s guidance says most flowering aquatic plants need at least four hours of direct sun for optimum growth and bloom; actual light needs depend on the species you select.

Before excavation, mark the proposed outline with a hose or rope. Plan the basin’s plant shelves, liner edge, pump, filter if needed, pipes, lighting, and any waterfall or bridge. Decide where overflow will drain and keep surrounding surface runoff out of the pond: water flowing in from a lawn or garden can carry fertilizers, pesticides, and other contaminants.

For a flexible liner, Kansas State advises allowing 18 to 24 inches of material beyond the pond edge so it can overlap and be secured with stone. Include that margin in your marked layout rather than discovering it after digging. Plan access to power and drainage before construction, and check local electrical and barrier requirements for the installation.

How should I choose aquatic plants?

Choose plants for the pond’s light, depth, climate, and size before buying them. UF/IFAS groups water-garden plants into three roles:

  • Floating plants sit at the surface and can provide shade.
  • Submerged plants grow below the surface. They produce oxygen during photosynthesis, but Illinois Extension notes they also consume oxygen through respiration around the clock.
  • Emergent plants grow in shallow water, with foliage rising above the surface.

A mix can add variety and help shade the water. UF/IFAS recommends keeping mature plant coverage to no more than two-thirds of the surface. Water lilies can shade water and help reduce algal growth. Native plants may suit the shoreline, but check that each species is appropriate for your region and will not outgrow the available space.

Do I need a pump or filter?

Not every water garden needs a pump or artificial filter. The choice depends on whether you want moving water, a waterfall, filtration, or fish—and on the pond’s volume and layout. UF/IFAS notes that circulation can make a larger pond less attractive to mosquitoes, but a pump does not guarantee their elimination.

Choosing a pump

Size a pump for the whole water path, not just a pond’s nominal volume. Penn State advises accounting for pond volume, the vertical lift and horizontal distance water must travel, waterfall height, and whether flow must pass through a filter. Also consider operating cost, efficiency, and longevity. Without those details, a specific pump capacity would be guesswork.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension gives circulating the pond volume through a filter in one to two hours as a best-results guideline. Treat that as its rule of thumb, not a universal engineering requirement; the correct flow depends on the pond and equipment.

When filtration matters

A plant-rich pond with modest fish numbers may stay balanced without an artificial filter, according to Oklahoma State University Extension. More fish can increase the need for filtration and circulation. Penn State distinguishes mechanical filters, which trap particles; biological filters, which help manage ammonia in ponds with higher fish loads; and plant filters. Oklahoma State describes sand and cartridge filters made for pools or hot tubs as poor fits for ponds because they clog quickly and are difficult to clean.

When does a water garden need to be designed for fish?

A pond for fish needs to be planned around the fish species and local conditions, rather than treated as a plant pond with fish added later. Extension recommendations vary: UF/IFAS advises at least 500 gallons for an ornamental fish pond and at least three feet of depth for koi, while noting that some koi experts recommend six feet. Oklahoma State’s regional guidance says a pond should be about two feet deep to have fish and plants. These figures are not one universal specification; check species-specific husbandry guidance for your climate, stocking level, and pond design before building.

How do I prevent algae and mosquitoes?

Limit algae’s light and nutrients

Algae management begins with reducing the conditions that encourage excess growth. Shade water with plants, fertilize conservatively around the pond, and avoid overfeeding or overcrowding fish. UF/IFAS also recommends plants and rocks as surfaces for beneficial bacteria. Use an aquatic algicide only as a last resort, and only if its label says it is appropriate for the pond’s plants and fish.

Reduce standing-water mosquito habitat

Mosquitoes can reproduce in standing water. For a small container, UF/IFAS recommends filling it until water overflows to flush larvae, often as frequently as twice a week in summer. In a larger pond, a pump can keep water moving and make it less attractive to mosquitoes, though it is not a guarantee.

What safety details should I plan for?

  • Children: Keep toddlers from accessing the pond, following Oklahoma State University Extension’s safety guidance. Check local rules for any required barriers.
  • Electrical equipment: Use ground-fault interrupter (GFCI) outlets for pumps and lights. Kansas State also advises protected outlets for water-feature equipment. Unplug pumps and lights before entering the pond.
  • Slips: Liners and pond edges can be slippery. Account for footing when choosing the location and finishing the edge.
  • Runoff and overflow: Keep lawn and garden runoff out of the basin, and direct overflow so it does not create a hazard or unwanted pooling.

Local electrical and barrier codes vary; confirm the applicable requirements where you live before installation.
