There is no universal winner. “Waste-based brick” covers fired and unfired products made with very different wastes, binders, curing methods and transport distances. A fair decision compares a specific product with a specific clay brick on delivered wall cost, verified test results, code suitability and a clearly defined environmental boundary. Some unfired formulations can avoid kiln energy; others are kiln-fired and may have little production-energy advantage over clay. Fly-ash brick can be suitable for masonry when its exact class and test reports meet the applicable specification, but the material label alone proves neither strength nor durability.
What “waste-based brick” actually means
Waste-derived masonry is an umbrella category, not a single material. Published work has examined cotton-mill waste, recycled paper-mill waste, rice-husk ash, fly ash, red mud, crusher dust, recycled concrete and recycled brick waste. The waste may replace part of the mineral feedstock, act as a fine aggregate or become a major component of a geopolymer or cementitious mix.

Manufacturing route matters as much as feedstock. A waste-containing brick can still be kiln-fired. Another product may be pressed and cured without firing, using cement, lime, a geopolymer binder or another stabilizer. Drying, curing time, binder chemistry, water demand, electricity, kiln fuel and haulage all change the product’s cost and impacts.

| Route or product family | Material examples in the published evidence | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Non-fired, pressed and cured | Fly ash with bonding material plus sand or stone dust; other locally available wastes | Can avoid kiln firing, but binder manufacture, curing energy, water, handling and transport still count. |
| Fired waste-containing brick | Waste blended into a clay-based or mineral mix | Retains kiln fuel and firing emissions; waste content alone does not establish a lower footprint. |
| Geopolymer or cement-based brick | Fly ash, recycled concrete waste or recycled brick waste with an activating or cementitious system | Performance depends on formulation, curing and activator or binder impacts; compare the tested recipe, not the category name. |
| Waste-specific composite | Cotton waste, paper-mill waste, rice-husk ash, red mud or crusher dust blends | Results from one waste stream and mix cannot be transferred to another without product testing. |
For that reason, a quotation should identify the feedstock percentages, binder, curing method, dimensions, intended use and applicable standard. “Eco brick” or “waste brick” is not a technical specification.

Which is cheaper, waste-based bricks or clay bricks?
The honest answer is local and basis-dependent. The strongest numeric evidence here is an indicative manufacturing estimate for one non-fired fly-ash technology, not a current delivered-market comparison with clay brick.
What the documented cost figures show
The CSIR-IMMT technology profile for bricks and blocks made with fly ash, red mud, crusher dust and mineral or mining wastes describes a non-fired process in which fly ash makes up 42–70% of the mix, alongside a bonding material and locally available waste such as sand or stone dust. It estimates manufacturing cost at ₹2.50–₹3.00 per brick. For a 230 × 110 × 75 mm brick, the profile puts the bonding-material component at ₹1.20–₹1.40, depending on fly-ash and additive quality. Those are technology-profile estimates, not a 2026 consumer quote, delivered price or universal fly-ash-brick cost.
| Evidence | Reported figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| CSIR-IMMT non-fired fly-ash and other-waste process | ₹2.50–₹3.00 manufacturing cost per brick | Indicative production estimate for that process; exclude it from a direct market comparison unless all other cost bases match. |
| Bonding material in the same profile | ₹1.20–₹1.40 for a 230 × 110 × 75 mm brick | Depends on fly-ash and additive quality; it is a component estimate, not the complete installed cost. |
| India low-cost-housing assessment (2018) | Industrial and agro-waste bricks had cheaper rates in the study’s chosen comparison | A study-specific result, not a current price survey or a promise of lower prices in another city. |
Compare the cost of a wall, not the cost of a label
Ask each supplier for a current local quote and convert it to the same functional unit: delivered cost per square metre of completed wall. A per-brick comparison can mislead when units have different dimensions, tolerances or breakage rates.
- Unit and wall coverage: record nominal dimensions, actual dimensions and bricks required per square metre.
- Freight and unloading: heavy masonry can erase a factory-price advantage when the source is distant.
- Breakage and rejects: include the percentage lost between delivery and installation.
- Mortar: different dimensions, joint thickness and absorption change mortar consumption.
- Labour and equipment: account for laying rate, cutting, handling and any special curing or storage.
- Finish: include plaster, render, paint or exposed-masonry treatment required by the product and the project.
- Protection and detailing: add damp-proofing, coping, waterproofing or other measures required for the site exposure.
- Compliance costs: include independent testing, approvals and redesign if the unit is not already accepted for the intended structural application.
Do not compare a ₹2.50–₹3.00 manufacturing estimate with a delivered clay-brick price and call the difference a saving. Use the same location, tax treatment, delivery point, wall area and installation scope.
Are fly-ash bricks as strong as clay bricks?
Some tested fly-ash or other waste-derived bricks can meet demanding masonry classes, while other formulations will not. “Waste-based” does not specify compressive strength, water absorption, dimensional tolerance or durability. Strength has to be established for the exact product and batch under the applicable test method.

Use the applicable product standard
In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards registry lists IS 12894:2002, Pulverized Fuel Ash-Lime Bricks — Specification (First Revision). The registry records amendments from 2011 and 2018, review in 2022 and reaffirmation in January 2022. The standard establishes product and classification requirements; the registry entry does not certify that a particular manufacturer or batch complies.
For a proposed fly-ash brick, request a current test report that identifies the product, dimensions, batch and laboratory. Confirm that the report uses the locally applicable specification and test methods and that the declared class is acceptable for the design. If the project is outside India, use the governing national or project specification rather than assuming IS 12894 applies.

Tests and properties to compare
- Compressive strength: compare the declared class and the measured result using the same standard method. A single peak value without the class, specimen condition and test method is not enough.
- Water absorption: check the reported result against the limit for the intended product and exposure. High absorption can affect durability, dampness and mortar behavior.
- Dimensions and tolerances: tighter units can reduce mortar and finishing work; inconsistent units increase labour and waste.
- Efflorescence: ask how the product performed in the applicable assessment, particularly where salts, moisture or exposed faces are concerns.
- Durability and exposure: verify suitability for external walls, wet areas, freeze-thaw conditions, aggressive soils or other project-specific exposures.
- Structural role: distinguish non-load-bearing infill from load-bearing masonry and reinforced-masonry design. The engineer’s design and code checks govern the use.
The 2023 comparative study assessed fired clay, fly-ash cement and geopolymer bricks, including recycled-concrete-waste and recycled-brick-waste geopolymer recipes. Its conclusions apply to those tested recipes and its assessment method, not to every product sold as a waste brick.
Are waste-based bricks better for the environment?
They can be, but only under a stated life-cycle boundary. Potential benefits include diverting waste from disposal and reducing virgin-clay extraction. Potential burdens include binder or activator production, curing electricity, water use, transport, waste processing and end-of-life treatment. A fired waste brick still carries kiln impacts, and an unfired brick is not impact-free.
Why production route dominates many comparisons
The review Life cycle assessment of traditional and alternative bricks: A review (Ramos Huarachi et al., 2020) reports that production had the highest impact in the categories considered across the reviewed studies, with drying and burning among the most influential stages. It notes that replacing firing with stabilization needs further study and, where firing remains, recommends considering biomass or waste as fuel. This is a synthesis of prior studies, not a guarantee that every unfired product performs better in every impact category.

What the named case studies found
| Study and case | Reported result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dabaieh, Heinonen, El-Mahdy and Hassan (2020), Dakhla Oasis, Egypt | Up to 5,907 kg CO₂e and 5,305 MJ avoided per 1,000 bricks when sun-dried bricks replace fired clay bricks | Local comparison of sun-dried and fired clay bricks; not a result for every waste-based brick or location. |
| Joglekar, Kharkar, Mandavgane and Kulkarni (2018), India low-cost housing | Relative sustainability index: 0.25 burnt clay, 0.26 fly ash, 0.94 cotton waste | Indices reflect that study’s selected criteria and weights; they are not universal environmental rankings. |
| Alternative-brick study (2023) | Recycled-brick-waste geopolymer received overall weight 0.22; fly-ash cement brick 0.217 | Preference under that study’s analytic-hierarchy-process weighting and tested recipes. |
| Alternative-brick study (2023) | Mineral-resource scarcity reduction of 82–87% when recycled alternatives were used | Life-cycle result for the study’s alternatives, assumptions and system boundary. |
The Dakhla result is especially important to interpret correctly: it concerns sun-dried clay bricks, not waste-based bricks. It demonstrates how eliminating firing can change energy and carbon in a particular local supply chain; it does not supply a generic emission factor for all unfired products.

Require the comparison to state:
- Functional unit: one brick, one square metre of wall, or an equivalent structural and thermal function.
- System boundary: extraction and waste processing, manufacturing, transport, use, maintenance and end of life.
- Energy mix: local electricity, kiln fuel and any biomass or waste fuel.
- Binder and curing: cement, lime, geopolymer activator, water, curing temperature and duration.
- Transport: distances and vehicle assumptions for both waste feedstock and finished units.
- Waste allocation: whether a waste stream receives a disposal credit and how that credit is calculated.
- Durability and replacement: service life, maintenance and the consequences of early failure.
A product that scores well for mineral-resource scarcity can perform differently for climate change, water use, particulate pollution or human toxicity. Decision weights should be visible rather than presented as an objective ranking.
How to choose a brick for a real project
Step 1: Define the wall and exposure
Specify whether the unit is for load-bearing masonry, reinforced masonry, partitions or infill. Record internal or external exposure, wetting, freeze-thaw risk, proximity to salts, fire requirements, acoustic targets and finish. The same brick can be acceptable for a partition and unsuitable for an exposed structural wall.
Step 2: Shortlist locally available products
Ask manufacturers for the full formulation category, dimensions, production route, minimum order, lead time, delivery radius and storage requirements. Include comparable clay units from the same market so freight and labour assumptions are not biased.
Step 3: Verify documents and samples
Obtain the applicable declaration or certificate, independent laboratory reports for compressive strength and water absorption, dimensional measurements and evidence of efflorescence or durability testing where relevant. Match the report’s product name, dimensions and batch to the units being purchased. A generic report for a different mix or old batch is weak evidence.

Step 4: Convert quotations to installed wall cost
Use one spreadsheet line for units, freight, unloading, breakage, mortar, labour, equipment, finish, testing and project-specific protection. Divide the total by completed wall area. Record taxes and the quote date because binder, fuel and transport prices change.
Step 5: Check design and approval
Have the project’s structural engineer confirm the declared class, allowable use, connection details and compatibility with mortar and reinforcement. Confirm local building-control acceptance before ordering. Do not substitute a waste-derived unit in a structural design solely because its purchase price is lower.
Step 6: Inspect delivery and retain traceability
Check dimensions, visible cracks, chipped edges, colour or texture consistency and packaging. Keep the invoice, batch identification and test report. Quarantine visibly damaged or inconsistent loads and document the supplier’s replacement process.

Comparing manufacturing cost with delivered price
A factory estimate excludes distance, unloading, losses and installation. Correct it by comparing delivered cost per square metre of wall with identical scope.
Assuming all fly-ash bricks are equivalent
Fly-ash percentage, lime or cement content, additives, moisture, pressing pressure and curing can change performance. Correct it by requiring product-specific reports and a stated standard.

Calling every unfired brick low-carbon
Binder production, electricity, curing, transport and replacement can offset kiln savings. Correct it by defining the functional unit and life-cycle boundary before comparing results.
Using one laboratory number as a design approval
Strength alone does not establish water resistance, durability, dimensions or code acceptance. Correct it by checking the complete property set and having the design professional approve the use.
Ignoring supply reliability
A theoretically lower-impact brick that arrives inconsistently or requires long-distance haulage may perform poorly in the project’s actual footprint. Correct it by checking production capacity, lead time, batch consistency and local testing access.
