Most full-size washers are about 27 inches wide, but height and depth vary by style: front-load models are typically 39 inches high and 32–34 inches deep, while top-load models are about 42–44 inches high and 27–28 inches deep. These are planning ranges, not a universal standard. Check the exact washer’s specifications and installation instructions, then measure the laundry space, hookups, door or lid movement, and delivery route.
Typical washing machine dimensions
Dimensions below are approximate U.S. planning figures from Whirlpool’s washer and dryer sizing guide. Measurements are width × height × depth. Actual dimensions and required clearances vary by model, so use the chosen appliance’s specification and installation sheet before finalizing cabinetry or an alcove.
| Configuration | Typical planning dimensions (W × H × D) | Key fit consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Standard front-load washer | About 27 × 39 × 32–34 inches | Depth for hoses and front-door swing |
| Standard top-load washer | About 27 × 42–44 × 27–28 inches | Space above for the lid to open |
| Compact washer | About 24 × 33–36 × 24–26 inches | Confirm capacity and hookup clearance for the exact model |
| Compact stacked front-load pair | About 24–28 × 76–78 × 32–34 inches | Ceiling height, compatible stacking hardware, and control access |
For side-by-side washer and dryer placement, Whirlpool describes a pair as commonly about 54 inches wide and recommends roughly 56 inches of room. Its guide recommends allowing about 29 inches wide and 80 inches high for a compact stacked pair. These are broad planning recommendations, not guarantees that a particular pair will fit.
Why the exact model matters
“Standard size” is a useful starting point, not a dependable substitute for a model drawing. For example, Samsung lists its WA45T3200AW top-load washer at 27 × 44 × 29 5/16 inches (W × H × D), with a 4.5 cu. ft. capacity. The listed depth differs from the general top-load range. This is a manufacturer specification example, not a recommendation or a statement about current availability. See Samsung’s WA45T3200AW specification sheet.

How to measure the laundry space
Measure the installation opening—not just the appliance cabinet—and compare those measurements with the model’s installation sheet. A few inches can be lost to trim, baseboards, counters, valves, or a narrowing doorway.
- Measure width. Measure the opening at more than one point, including between cabinets or walls and around trim. Use the narrowest usable width.
- Measure height. Check from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, such as a counter, shelf, or cabinet. For a top-loader, account for the lid’s full opening arc and usable space above it.
- Measure depth. Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the available space. Note baseboards, pipes, valves, doors, and counters that reduce usable depth.
- Add installation allowances. Use the exact product instructions for hose connections, ventilation, electrical access, and any required gaps. Do not assume that the appliance’s listed cabinet depth includes room for hookups.
- Check operation and service access. Make sure the door or lid can open fully and that people can load and unload laundry. Leave any service clearances required by the manufacturer.
As general guidance, Whirlpool recommends six inches behind appliances for hose connections and ventilation, one inch at the sides for a side-by-side setup, about four feet in front of a front-load unit, and at least two feet above a top-loader. These are broad guide figures; the specific model’s instructions control.

Keep regional clearance advice separate
Installation guidance can differ by market and setup. Samsung’s UK guidance calls for at least 25 mm at both sides and 50 mm behind for under-counter installation. For stacked machines, it calls for at least 25 mm around the top and sides, 50 mm behind, and 550 mm for the doors. Its side-by-side guidance also addresses door-opening space. These UK figures should not be combined with U.S. guidance as though one clearance rule applies to every installation. Consult the instructions for the appliance sold in your market. See Samsung UK’s washing-machine installation guide.
Measure the delivery route too
A washer that fits the finished alcove can still be too large to get there. Measure the narrowest points along the route from the entry to the laundry space: exterior and interior doors, hallways, tight corners, stairs, and any doorway or obstruction that affects maneuvering. Whirlpool specifically recommends checking the entry route. Compare those measurements with the appliance’s dimensions and the delivery instructions, including whether a door must be opened or removed.

For a front-loader, consider how far the open door projects into the room. Product drawings may show the cabinet depth separately from the depth with clearance or the door open; check which measurement is shown. Samsung’s WA45T3200AW sheet, for example, distinguishes product depth from overall depth with clearance.
When compact or stacked machines make sense
Compact washers
A compact washer can suit a narrow laundry area, but a smaller exterior does not establish whether its capacity meets your needs. Compare the model’s capacity and installation requirements as well as its width, height, and depth. Allow for the same practical needs—connections, operation, and delivery access—as you would for a full-size unit.

- 1. Important Pre‑Purchase Note Please confirm the 33"×30" size before ordering. This silicone mat is tightly multi‑folded for shipping, you will notice deep heavy creases when you first open the package, this is normal and not a product defect. Lay heavy objects on top for several days, most creases will gradually fade, and some light creases may take extra time to smooth out.
- Washing Machine Drain Pan for Front Load & Top Load Washer Our washer drain pan fits most front load and top load washing machines. Please confirm the outer dimensions and measure your placement space before ordering to avoid size mismatch.
- Simple Flat Installation for Household Washers Lay your washing machine drain pan on level ground and place the washer on top. The pan may arrive folded, slight creases are normal. Place heavy objects on it for several days to restore full flatness, then keep the pan horizontal for optimal water collection.
- Flexible Washer Drain Pan, Easy to Clean Made of tough flexible material, the surface of this washer drain pan is smooth. You can easily wipe or rinse off water and dirt for daily cleaning.
- Simple Flat Installation for Household Washers Lay your washing machine drain pan on flat ground, then put the washer on top. Keep the pan horizontal to get better water collection effect.
Stacked pairs
Stacking can reduce the floor width needed for a washer and dryer, but it uses more vertical space. Confirm that the washer and dryer are approved for stacking together, use the specified stacking hardware, and fit within the available ceiling height. Check access to controls and the dryer door, along with the installation clearances in both appliances’ instructions.
Pedestals and added height
A pedestal changes the installed height of a front-load washer. Whirlpool says its pedestals may add about 10–16 inches. Include that added height when checking overhead cabinets, counters, and reach to controls; verify the pedestal’s dimensions for the specific appliance rather than treating the range as universal.

Accessibility and usable opening height
For installations that fall under applicable U.S. accessibility requirements, the U.S. Access Board’s ADA Standards guidance sets opening-height limits: a top-loading machine opening must be no more than 36 inches above the finished floor, while the bottom of a front-loading machine door opening must be 15–36 inches above the finished floor. The guidance also addresses clear floor space, reach, and operable parts. These provisions apply in relevant covered settings; they are not a blanket rule governing every private home. See the U.S. Access Board guide to laundry equipment.
Compare capacity and efficiency after confirming fit
Once the installation works, choose capacity based on household laundry volume and whether you regularly wash bulky items. Then compare product labels rather than assuming that machines with similar dimensions use similar amounts of energy or water.
- EnergyGuide: ENERGY STAR advises shoppers to use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare energy use and estimated annual operating cost.
- Efficiency measures: ENERGY STAR defines IMEF as an efficiency measure where higher is better, and IWF as water use per capacity where lower is better.
- Program-level comparisons: ENERGY STAR’s consumer page says certified front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers. It also reports 14 gallons per load for certified full-size washers compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. These figures describe the stated program comparison categories, not every pair of individual models.
See ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer guidance and compare the current labels for the specific models you are considering.
