Council discontinued the plan on 16 December 2025 and directed the City to replace the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre while investigating alternative Sports Hub sites in the Central Ward. The often-cited $21.2 million figure was a June 2025 estimate for the Scenic Park proposal, excluding GST—not a confirmed budget for a replacement-site project.
What happened to the Wanneroo Sports Hub?
In July 2025, the City announced that Council had endorsed a revised schematic design for a Sports Hub at Scenic Drive, south of the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre. In December, Council resolved to discontinue the Scenic Park plan, proceed with replacing the existing recreation centre, and investigate other possible Sports Hub locations in the Central Ward. The Scenic Park design should therefore be understood as a discontinued proposal, not an active approved construction project. The City update identifies an investigation of alternative Central Ward locations, but does not name a selected site.
Why was the Scenic Park proposal stopped?
The City’s Council briefing reported an approximately $10.4 million funding shortfall for the proposal. That shortfall reflected increased estimated costs and the absence of confirmed funding for the full amount; the material available does not establish it as the sole reason Council discontinued the Scenic Park plan. The July design changes addressed environmental and site constraints. Mayor Linda Aitken said the revised design reflected factors including the City’s new bushfire protection zones. How much was the Wanneroo Sports Hub expected to cost?
The City’s quantity-surveyor estimate from June 2025 put the Scenic Park Sports Hub at $21,213,405 excluding GST. The figure was reproduced in the City’s 8 July Council briefing and was an estimate for that proposal, not a final construction cost or a budget for any future site. The increase from $18.4 million to $21.2 million compares estimates from different stages of the Scenic Park proposal; it is not evidence of a final cost. The briefing’s approximately $10.4 million shortfall is also distinct from the estimate itself. In June 2024, the City announced a $5 million State Government funding commitment for the recreation centre redevelopment. What was in the July 2025 design?
The revised schematic design proposed two multi-sport courts, facilities for boxing and calisthenics clubs, meeting rooms, changing rooms, and storage. Where will a new Wanneroo Sports Hub be built?
No replacement site is confirmed in the City’s 18 December 2025 update. Council directed the City to investigate alternative locations in the Central Ward while proceeding with replacement of the existing Wanneroo Recreation Centre. Until the City identifies a site and publishes a new scope, budget, and schedule, the location and cost of a future Sports Hub remain unconfirmed. City of Wanneroo update, 18 December 2025

The City’s general project page continues to list Scenic Park, an $18.4 million budget, and expected completion in FY 2027/28. Those entries conflict with the later Council decision and should be treated as stale project details. A pre-decision engagement page also referred to a June 2026 construction start; that date does not establish a current start date after the Scenic Park plan was discontinued.
