Yes, Voron Cascade is real—but it is a released machine design, not a ready-to-run CNC or an official retail kit. Voron Design published the open-source Cascade desktop CNC milling-machine design on April 21, 2026. The latest release identified in the official repository materials is v1.0.2, dated May 18, 2026.
That distinction matters. Cascade gives experienced makers access to CAD, drawings, a build manual, panel files, STEP files, STLs, and a bill of materials. You still need to source the hardware, electronics, spindle or router, tooling, safety equipment, and control software yourself.

What is Voron Cascade?
Cascade is an official Voron Design desktop CNC milling-machine design. It is a separate CNC project—not a modified Voron 3D printer and not a printer accessory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Like Voron’s printer projects, Cascade follows a documented, open-source, self-build model. The design is distributed under the GPL-3.0 license. Voron publishes the files and documentation, while builders obtain and assemble the machine’s components.

What was actually released?
The official Cascade repository includes the main resources needed to plan and build the machine:
CADfiles- Assembly
Drawings - A build
Manual Panel_DXFsfor enclosure-panel fabricationSTEPsfor CAD workSTLsfor printed parts- The project README and license
The README identifies the bill of materials in the CAD directory or through the Voron Design website. Use that official BOM as the starting point rather than copying a parts list from a community post. The required quantities and components can vary with the machine revision and configuration; Voron’s sourcing guidance also treats the BOM as the authoritative reference.

Third-party suppliers may eventually offer partial or complete hardware kits, but a kit is not automatically an official Voron product. Before buying one, check which Cascade revision it supports, what the BOM it covers, which parts are substituted, where it ships, and what support the seller provides.
“Open source” also does not mean “free to build.” A complete machine can require structural materials, motion components, motors, drivers, controller electronics, panels, fasteners, printed parts, a spindle or router, collets, cutters, wiring, emergency-stop hardware, dust extraction, and measuring tools. A meaningful total cost requires a dated, complete BOM for a defined configuration and location.

What do you need to build one?
Downloading the repository is only the first step. A prospective builder should have or arrange the following.
Mechanical and fabricated parts
- Printed parts made to the specified material and revision
- Structural components and fasteners
- Linear rails or other specified motion hardware
- Panels or enclosure materials, where required by the design
- Tools for cutting, drilling, tapping, deburring, and accurate assembly
Motion, spindle, and control hardware
- Stepper motors, drivers, and a motion controller
- Limit or homing switches as specified by the documentation
- A compatible spindle or router
- Collets, tool holders, and cutting tools
- Workholding for the material and operation
- A method to load and run G-code
Safety and workshop equipment
- Accessible emergency-stop hardware
- Electrical isolation, grounding, and suitable protection
- Chip containment and dust extraction
- Eye and hearing protection
- Measuring and alignment equipment
Printed parts should not be treated as interchangeable with ordinary Voron printer parts. Their suitability depends on the role specified in the Cascade design, material, layer orientation, fastener preload, vibration, and heat exposure. Follow the manual for structural components rather than assuming that a material commonly used on a 3D printer is adequate for every CNC part.
What can Cascade realistically machine?
The official project description calls Cascade a desktop CNC milling machine, but the repository landing page does not by itself establish maximum cutting depth, spindle power, feed rates, accuracy, repeatability, surface finish, or production capacity.

That means claims about materials need to be separated carefully:
- Design intent: Cascade is intended as a compact subtractive machine for CNC milling work.
- Reasonable hobby applications: Wood, plastics, engraving, PCB isolation routing, and maker parts may be relevant use cases, subject to the final machine configuration and setup.
- Aluminum: Do not assume capability from the machine’s name or appearance. Aluminum performance depends on rigidity, rail preload, spindle runout, tooling, workholding, chip evacuation, alignment, and feeds and speeds.
- Steel and other hard materials: Do not claim suitability without documented testing or explicit official specifications.
In practice, the spindle, tool geometry, CAM strategy, workholding, and machine alignment are as important as the frame. A machine that can move a cutter is not automatically capable of producing accurate or safe metal parts.
How difficult is the build?
Cascade should not be approached as a casual 3D-printer-style assembly. A CNC build introduces cutting forces, sharp chips, rotating tools, dust, noise, and electrical hazards.
The difficult parts are likely to include:
- Squaring the machine: Frame geometry and rail alignment affect every subsequent operation.
- Installing motion components: Rails, drives, belts or screws, and carriages must be aligned and adjusted correctly.
- Wiring the control system: Motors, switches, spindle control, grounding, and emergency shutdown must be designed and tested safely.
- Setting up CAM: Toolpaths require appropriate tools, feeds, speeds, stepdowns, stepover, ramps, plunges, stock definitions, and collision checks.
- Calibrating and validating: The machine needs alignment, conservative test cuts, and checks of accuracy and repeatability before valuable work begins.
The official manual should determine the exact assembly sequence, configuration, and calibration procedure. Do not invent controller pinouts, firmware settings, or calibration values from unrelated Voron printer projects.
A sensible first-run process
- Download the latest tagged Cascade release from the release page.
- Read the manual and inspect the current BOM before ordering components.
- Keep CAD, DXFs, STLs, and other files from the same revision unless the manual states that parts are compatible.
- Print or fabricate the specified parts and verify them against the drawings.
- Assemble and square the frame before installing the motion system.
- Install the controller, switches, spindle or router, guarding, grounding, and emergency stop.
- Test motion without a cutter installed.
- Run conservative air cuts, then shallow cuts in a soft material.
- Validate alignment, workholding, tool clearance, and repeatability before machining expensive stock.
Safety is not optional
A spindle or router can eject broken tooling and chips at high speed. Wood dust can create respiratory and fire risks, while metal chips present different collection and handling problems. Electrical and rotating-tool hazards also remain when the machine is idle but energized.

Plan for an accessible emergency stop, proper grounding and electrical isolation, guarding or an enclosure, chip and dust management, safe tool changes, eye and hearing protection, and a rule against unattended operation. Do not assume that an enclosure alone makes the machine safe.
Cascade compared with alternatives
No single comparison can declare a universal winner without controlled testing. The useful question is which design matches your priorities.
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade | Voron users and DIY builders who want an official, versioned, open-source CNC design. | Self-sourcing, setup, safety work, and unestablished performance expectations compared with a commercial machine. |
| Milo | Builders comparing another compact community CNC mill. | Different enclosure approach, documentation, ecosystem, and configuration choices. Community comparisons are not independent performance tests. |
| PrintNC | Builders prioritizing a more fabrication-intensive route toward rigidity and metal-cutting potential. | Typically greater fabrication, sourcing, footprint, and mechanical setup demands. |
| OpenBuilds-style CNCs | Users who value an established extrusion-based ecosystem and modular components. | Accessibility and modularity may come with different stiffness and milling trade-offs. |
| Commercial desktop CNCs | Users who want warranty coverage, integrated electronics, manufacturer support, and a quicker path to cutting. | Less design freedom and potentially higher purchase cost, but more predictable setup and support. |
Community discussion comparing Cascade and Milo describes different design priorities, including enclosure and electronics-bay considerations. Treat those statements as community observations, not measured proof of capability.
Who should build Cascade?
Cascade is a good candidate if you already build and troubleshoot machines, have a suitable workspace and 3D-printing access, want an open design, and are prepared to learn CNC safety, CAM, workholding, and cutting parameters.
Postpone it if you need an out-of-box machine, manufacturer warranty, guaranteed production repeatability, a large work envelope, or documented industrial cutting performance. It is also a poor fit if you cannot safely manage chips, dust, rotating tooling, electrical hazards, or emergency shutdown.
For a CNC beginner, a supported commercial desktop machine may be the better first purchase. For a highly capable DIY builder, Cascade’s official documentation and versioned release structure make it a legitimate project to investigate—but not a promise of low cost or plug-and-play performance.
