Start with power if the bar is completely unresponsive; otherwise check the selected input, TV audio output, HDMI ARC/eARC or optical settings, and Bluetooth before attempting a model-specific reset.
First determine which problem you have: does the VIZIO sound bar power on but produce no sound, or will it not power on at all? If there are no lights, tones, or other signs of life, start with power. If it powers on, troubleshoot the selected input, TV audio output, cable, and connection settings before resetting it.

1. If the VIZIO sound bar will not power on
Push the power cable firmly into the sound bar and into a known-good wall outlet. Test that outlet with another device, and if possible try a different compatible power outlet. Inspect the cable for visible damage, but do not use a damaged cable.
If your system includes a wireless subwoofer or surround speakers, check their power connections separately. They can be unpowered even when the main bar is working.

After reconnecting power, look for indicator lights or listen for a startup tone. If the sound bar remains completely dead after the outlet and cable checks, the problem is more likely power-related or hardware-related than an incorrect TV input. Do not open the unit or attempt an internal repair; contact VIZIO support or pursue warranty service.
2. Select the input that matches the cable
A sound bar can be connected correctly and still remain silent when its selected input does not match the physical connection. Select the corresponding input using the sound bar, remote, or—on supported models—the VIZIO mobile app:

For TV audio, HDMI ARC/eARC is generally the preferred one-cable connection when both the television and sound bar support it. Optical is a useful alternative when ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable.

3. Check the TV’s audio-output settings
Open the television’s Sound, Audio Output, or Speakers menu. The exact labels vary by TV manufacturer, but select an option such as:
- External speakers or Audio system;
- HDMI ARC/eARC when using HDMI; or
- Optical or Digital audio out when using an optical cable.
Make sure the TV has not reverted to Internal TV Speakers. Also raise the TV volume and confirm that mute is off.

When using HDMI ARC or eARC
Connect the HDMI cable to the TV port specifically labeled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input. Connect the other end to the sound bar’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Then enable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings. CEC may have a brand-specific name, including Anynet+, BRAVIA Sync, SimpLink, or VIERA Link.
CEC allows the TV and sound bar to communicate and often enables TV-remote volume control. If ARC still does not work, turn off both devices, disconnect them from power briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable to the ARC/eARC ports, and power the TV back on before the sound bar. This is a connection reset—not a guarantee that the cable or either device is good.

Do not assume a new cable will fix every ARC handshake or CEC problem.
4. Optical connection: select PCM as a compatibility test
If the sound bar is connected with optical cable, select Optical on the sound bar and choose Optical or Digital audio out on the TV. Then look for a Digital Audio Output, Digital Sound Out, or similar setting and temporarily choose PCM.
PCM is specifically recommended as a compatibility test in some VIZIO setup material, including the V51-H6 instructions, when optical produces no sound. It is not a universal requirement for every VIZIO model or television. If PCM restores sound, the previous digital-audio format was likely incompatible with that connection or sound bar.
If the cable is loose, damaged, or absent, consider a digital optical audio cable (also called a Toslink cable). It is a practical fallback for TVs without ARC/eARC and a straightforward way to rule out a faulty optical cable. Confirm that the cable is compatible with both the TV and sound bar, and check current stock before purchasing.

5. Test the sound bar with Bluetooth
Pair a phone directly with the sound bar and play audio. Bluetooth bypasses the TV’s HDMI and optical audio path, so it is one of the quickest isolation tests:

- Bluetooth works: the sound bar and amplifier are probably operating; focus on the TV output setting, cable, TV port, or selected sound bar input.
- Bluetooth also fails: check the sound bar’s volume and mute state, try a reset only after the basic checks, and consider support if every input remains silent.
Bluetooth pairing instructions differ by VIZIO generation. On many older models, holding the Bluetooth button for about five seconds starts pairing. Some newer models use different button durations for ordinary Bluetooth pairing and VIZIO mobile-app pairing. Use the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming one button combination applies to all VIZIO sound bars.
6. If the subwoofer or surround speakers are not working
The main sound bar may produce audio while its wireless subwoofer or surround speakers remain silent. Check the following:
- Confirm that the subwoofer and surround components are plugged in and show their expected indicator light.
- Check the exact model manual for its pairing procedure. Some systems pair automatically during first setup; others require the Pair button on the subwoofer and the Bluetooth button on the sound bar.
- Keep the components reasonably close during pairing and remove obvious sources of interference where practical.
- If the surround speakers connect by wire to the subwoofer, inspect both speaker cables and verify left/right placement.
A powered subwoofer is not necessarily a paired subwoofer. If the indicator suggests pairing has failed, repeat the model-specific pairing process before concluding that the speaker is defective.

7. Check the remote separately
Press the physical buttons on the sound bar. If the bar changes volume or input from its own controls but not from the remote, the audio system may be fine and the remote is the separate problem.
- Reseat or replace the remote batteries.
- Remove anything blocking the remote’s path to the sound bar.
- Confirm that the remote belongs to the exact VIZIO sound bar model family.
- Check that HDMI-CEC is enabled if you are trying to control volume with the TV remote.
- Use the VIZIO mobile app only if your model supports it and the sound bar can complete the required pairing process.
If the original remote is missing or damaged, a VIZIO-compatible replacement remote may help, but compatibility is model-specific. Read the model number from the sound bar’s rear label or manual before ordering; a remote that looks similar may not control your unit.
8. Identify the exact model before resetting it
VIZIO has released multiple sound bar generations with different button layouts, LED behavior, app workflows, and reset procedures. Find the model number on the rear or underside label, packaging, manual, or product documentation. Examples include model families such as V21-H8R and SV210M-0808.

Do not use a reset combination found for a different model simply because the buttons appear similar.

The V21-H8R manual specifies a factory reset by holding Bluetooth and Volume Down on the sound bar for five seconds. The LEDs flash three times when the reset completes. This erases saved settings.
Model-specific example: VIZIO SV210M-0808
The SV210M-0808 manual gives the same physical-button combination—Bluetooth plus Volume Down for five seconds—and warns that app pairing must be performed again afterward. Its subwoofer remains paired according to that manual.
These examples do not establish a universal VIZIO reset method. Some older models use a remote-menu reset instead. A factory reset should be the final troubleshooting step after checking power, input, cables, TV settings, and Bluetooth because it removes customized settings and may require pairing again.

Have the exact model number and a description of the tests you already performed ready when you contact support. Avoid claiming that a particular internal component has failed unless a qualified technician has diagnosed it.

Why is my VIZIO sound bar not producing sound?
Check whether the sound bar has power. If it does, select the input matching the cable, choose external speakers in the TV’s audio settings, and verify the HDMI ARC/eARC or optical configuration. Bluetooth playback from a phone can show whether the sound bar itself is functioning.
Why does my VIZIO sound bar have no sound over optical?
Try the TV’s digital audio output setting on PCM, while the sound bar is set to Optical. PCM is a compatibility test recommended for some VIZIO models, including the V51-H6, but it is not required universally.
How can I tell whether my VIZIO sound bar or TV is the problem?
Test Bluetooth from a phone. If Bluetooth works, the sound bar is probably functioning and the fault is more likely the TV’s output setting, HDMI or optical cable, TV port, or selected sound bar input.
Is Bluetooth plus Volume Down the universal VIZIO sound bar reset?
