30 Hard-to-Kill Plants That Tolerate Low Light

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snake plant, ZZ plant, Cast-iron plant, green Pothos, heart-leaf philodendron, and Chinese evergreen are the safest low-light choices. They tolerate limited daylight and imperfect care, but no houseplant thrives indefinitely in complete darkness or waterlogged soil. The key is matching the plant to the room, then adjusting watering and light based on its response.

The best genuinely low-light houseplants are snake plant, ZZ plant, cast-iron plant, pothos, heart-leaf philodendron, Chinese evergreen, peace lily, and several palms and dracaenas. They tolerate a dim room better than most plants, but “hard-to-kill” does not mean that a plant can live without light. Every living plant needs usable light, suitable watering, drainage, and protection from extremes.

A north-facing window or a spot a few feet from a brighter window may qualify as low light. A room with no meaningful daylight is different: choose artificial lighting or expect even the most tolerant plant to decline. The University of Minnesota notes that low-light plants still need usable illumination, while Illinois Extension gives roughly 75 foot-candles as a general low-light reference and warns that light drops sharply as a plant is moved farther from a window. See the guidance from University of Minnesota Extension and Illinois Extension.

10 easiest choices for a dim room

Plant Best feature Important caution
Snake plant Handles low light and missed waterings Overwatering causes more problems than drought
ZZ plant Tolerates low light, dry periods, and variable humidity Keep its rhizomes out of constantly wet soil
Cast-iron plant Unusually tolerant of dim light and temperature variation Grows slowly
Pothos Adaptable, trailing, and easy to propagate Variegated forms need more light
Heart-leaf philodendron Durable trailing foliage Can become stretched in very dim conditions
Chinese evergreen Reliable low-light foliage plant Variegation may fade in deep shade
Peace lily Shows thirst by wilting Needs more even moisture than a snake plant or ZZ plant
Parlor palm One of the more adaptable indoor palms Dislikes waterlogged soil and very dry air
Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’ Works well in offices and rooms without direct sun Do not overwater; check pet-safety information
Lucky bamboo Performs in low to medium light and can tolerate deep shade It is a dracaena, not true bamboo

30 hard-to-kill plants that tolerate low or filtered light

The plants below are not equally tolerant. The first group is the safest for genuinely dim rooms. The second group can work in lower light but usually gives better results with some filtered or moderate light. The final group should not be oversold as deep-low-light plants.

Group 1: Best bets for genuinely dim rooms

  1. Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria trifasciata). Its thick leaves and drought tolerance make it forgiving of missed waterings and imperfect humidity. Let the potting medium dry substantially before watering again. In very low light it may grow slowly and produce less new foliage.
  2. ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). Underground rhizomes help it withstand dry periods, irregular care, and low light. Water only after the growing medium has dried well; prolonged wetness can rot the rhizomes. The ASPCA lists ZZ plant as toxic to pets if chewed.
  3. Cast-iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). This is one of the strongest choices for a dim corner, variable indoor temperatures, and occasional watering mistakes. Its trade-off is patience: growth is slow, and harsh direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.
  4. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum). This trailing vine is widely available, easy to propagate, and adaptable to many interiors. Solid-green plants cope better with low light than strongly variegated cultivars, which need more illumination to maintain their pattern. Pothos is toxic to pets if ingested.
  5. Heart-leaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum). A forgiving trailing plant for shelves, hanging baskets, and offices. Low light can produce longer spaces between leaves and less vigorous growth. It is toxic to pets if chewed.
  6. Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema spp.). Its foliage plants are regularly recommended for low-light interiors. Green cultivars are generally better choices for the darkest locations; silver, cream, or heavily variegated forms may lose color or become less vigorous. Chinese evergreen is toxic to pets.
  7. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum spp.). It tolerates low light and visibly wilts when thirsty, making it useful for beginners who need a clear warning signal. Do not use that wilt as permission to keep it perpetually dry: peace lilies generally need more consistent moisture than snake plants and ZZ plants. They are toxic to pets.
  8. Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans). A compact palm that can manage low indoor light. Keep the soil from becoming chronically soggy and protect it from very dry air, which can brown leaf tips.
  9. Lady palm (Rhapis excelsa). University of Minnesota Extension includes lady palm among low-light houseplants. It is slow-growing and may cost more than common starter plants, but it can make a durable, architectural floor plant.
  10. Kentia palm (Howea forsteriana). Kentia palms tolerate indoor low light better than many palms. They need room to spread and should be watered thoroughly only when the upper portion of the medium has dried enough—not kept constantly wet.
  11. Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’. This dark-green dracaena is a dependable option for offices and rooms without direct sun. Allow the medium to dry somewhat between waterings and avoid placing it in a cold draft. Some dracaenas are toxic to pets, so verify the exact plant.
  12. Corn plant (Dracaena fragrans). It tolerates adaptable indoor conditions and moderate-to-low light, although growth will be slower in a dark room. Overwatering is a common cause of decline. ASPCA identifies dracaenas as potentially harmful to pets.
  13. Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana). Despite its common name, it is not a true bamboo. Penn State Extension reports strong performance in low to medium light and even deep shade. Keep it away from pets because dracaenas can be toxic.
  14. Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia spp.). Dumb cane can grow in lower light and has considerable light tolerance. Dim conditions may slow growth and produce less substantial foliage. It is toxic to pets and children if chewed, so it is not a good choice where leaves are easily accessible.
  15. Arrowhead plant (Syngonium podophyllum). This adaptable vine appears on low-light houseplant lists and can be trained, supported, or allowed to trail. Insufficient light may cause weak, elongated growth. It is toxic to pets.
  16. Homalomena. Homalomena can suit a low-light indoor location and offers broad foliage, but it is less widely available than pothos or snake plant. Avoid cold drafts and saturated soil; availability and exact care can vary by species or cultivar.

Group 2: Tolerant, but better with filtered or moderate light

  1. Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata). Its swollen base stores water, so it tolerates infrequent watering. It can manage some lower light but performs better in bright indirect light and is not ideal for a truly dark room.
  2. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Spider plants are adaptable and produce offsets that are easy to propagate. They can tolerate low light, but useful indirect light supports denser growth and healthier-looking foliage. Avoid keeping the pot constantly wet.
  3. Bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii). Illinois Extension identifies this palm as an exception among palms that can handle lower light. It performs best in warm, humid conditions with soil kept more evenly moist than for a ZZ plant.
  4. Prayer plant (Maranta spp.). Its patterned leaves can work in a lower-light interior. It is less forgiving than the core choices, requiring more consistent moisture and humidity. Dry air, erratic watering, and poor placement can quickly damage the foliage.
  5. Peperomia. Many peperomias tolerate dim areas and their relatively thick leaves store some moisture. That also makes overwatering dangerous: let the medium partly dry and use a fast-draining setup.
  6. Spiderwort (Tradescantia zebrina). This trailing plant can tolerate lower light, but its color and compact growth improve with brighter filtered light. In a dim room it may become leggy; trim the stems to encourage a fuller plant.
  7. Grape ivy (Cissus rhombifolia). An adaptable indoor vine for filtered or medium light. It produces denser growth with more illumination and should not be left in soggy soil.
  8. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica). Rubber plants manage moderate indoor light and can be more forgiving than many large-leaved houseplants. They are not deep-shade plants, and sudden movement from shade into strong sun can scorch leaves, so change light gradually.
  9. Bird’s-nest fern (Asplenium nidus). This fern tolerates filtered light and is less demanding than some specialty ferns. It still needs more consistent moisture and humidity than a snake plant or ZZ plant. Avoid allowing the crown—the central growing point—to remain flooded.
  10. Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata). Illinois Extension includes Boston fern among plants that can tolerate low-light minimums. It is far less drought-tolerant than the core low-light plants and often declines in dry indoor air.
  11. Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus). This fern-like plant can tolerate moderate indoor light and has soft, airy foliage. It generally needs more light than a cast-iron plant and can dry quickly, so check the medium regularly.

Group 3: Filtered-light plants—do not call these foolproof in deep shade

  1. Calathea. Calatheas are forest-understory plants that can work in filtered light, but they are sensitive to dry air, inconsistent watering, and poor-quality water. They are attractive choices for a suitable room, not reliable choices for neglect or darkness.
  2. Staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum). It can handle filtered light, but humidity, mounting, watering technique, and air circulation matter. It is not a beginner-level choice for a dry, dark room.
  3. English ivy (Hedera helix). English ivy tolerates lower light, but indoor plants may become leggy and are vulnerable to spider mites. Monitor the undersides of leaves and keep ivy away from pets.

How much light is “not much sunlight”?

Low light does not mean no light, and it does not necessarily mean a plant must sit beside a sunny window. A north-facing window can provide low light in many homes. A spot several feet from an east-, south-, or west-facing window may also work, depending on the glass, curtains, season, and obstructions outside. Measure the actual location rather than judging the entire room: a bright window ledge and a dark back corner may have radically different conditions.

Watch the plant as well as the window. Weak, spindly stems, unusually long gaps between leaves, pale foliage, lower-leaf yellowing, and leaf drop can indicate insufficient light. Those symptoms can also result from overwatering, root damage, pests, temperature stress, or nutrient problems, so do not diagnose from one symptom alone. The Royal Horticultural Society’s houseplant troubleshooting guidance provides useful symptom comparisons.

Variegated plants usually need more light than solid-green versions because less of each leaf is actively photosynthesizing. In very dim conditions, a variegated pothos or Chinese evergreen may lose some of its pattern, while a green cultivar may continue growing.

Watering rules for low-light rooms

  • Check before watering. Test the growing medium with a finger, wooden stick, or optional plant moisture meter. Do not water by a fixed weekly schedule.
  • Water less often when light is low. Plants generally use water more slowly when they grow slowly. A pot that was appropriate beside a bright window may stay wet too long in a dim corner.
  • Let snake plants and ZZ plants dry substantially. Their drought tolerance does not make them immune to root or rhizome rot.
  • Keep peace lilies, palms, ferns, and prayer plants more evenly moist. They should not be left bone-dry for long periods, although “evenly moist” still does not mean waterlogged.
  • Use drainage. Choose pots with drainage holes, empty decorative cachepots and saucers after watering, and use a well-drained medium. This is particularly important for snake plant, ZZ plant, peperomia, and other plants with fleshy roots or rhizomes.

A simple setup for a dim indoor space

  1. Choose a plant from Group 1 if the room is genuinely dim.
  2. Place it where it receives the most usable daylight without touching a cold window or receiving harsh, sudden sun.
  3. Use a container with drainage holes and a well-draining indoor potting mix appropriate to the plant. A fern or prayer plant may need a different moisture-retaining mix from a snake plant or peperomia.
  4. Keep the plant away from heating vents, air-conditioning blasts, and cold drafts.
  5. Inspect leaves and stems periodically for pests, dust, yellowing, or stretched growth.
  6. Rotate the pot occasionally if growth leans toward the window. Prune damaged or excessively long stems with clean houseplant pruning shears.

When to add a grow light

If a plant repeatedly produces thin, stretched growth or drops leaves despite appropriate watering, the location may simply be too dark. A supplemental LED can make a marginal room workable. Penn State Extension notes that some low-light plants, including snake plant and pothos, may benefit from supplemental full-spectrum LED lighting. Illinois Extension gives 14–16 hours as a general supplemental-light duration and recommends a daily dark period rather than leaving lights on continuously. Guidance is available from Penn State Extension and Illinois Extension.

For a room with little or no daylight, consider a LED grow light for indoor plants. Start conservatively, follow the fixture’s recommended distance, and increase exposure gradually. The goal is usable light, not intense heat or sun-like stress. Supplemental lighting is also useful during short winter days or behind curtains and in interior rooms.

Pet safety: the plant name matters

Several plants on this list can harm pets if chewed, including pothos, ZZ plant, dumb cane, peace lily, Chinese evergreen, philodendron, and dracaenas such as corn plant and lucky bamboo. The ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant database lists plant-specific information; verify the botanical name because common names can refer to different plants.

Cast-iron plant and spider plant appear in ASPCA’s pet-friendly recommendations, but “non-toxic” does not mean a pet should eat large quantities of any houseplant. If a pet has chewed a potentially harmful plant, contact a veterinarian or an appropriate animal poison-control service promptly.

What these plants cannot do

Houseplants can improve the appearance and feel of a room, but they should not be treated as a replacement for ventilation, filtration, moisture control, or other indoor-air-quality measures. Illinois Extension cautions against relying on plants as the sole method of improving indoor air quality. They are also not a substitute for a window or grow light: no plant thrives indefinitely in complete darkness or chronically waterlogged soil.

Basic supplies worth considering

For the lowest-maintenance starting point, choose a solid-green snake plant, ZZ plant, or cast-iron plant in a container with drainage. For a trailing plant, choose green pothos or heart-leaf philodendron. If the room has almost no daylight, add supplemental LED lighting rather than expecting even a hard-to-kill plant to survive on darkness alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can houseplants live in a room with no sunlight?

No. “Low light” means limited usable light, not complete darkness. A north-facing window or a location several feet from a brighter window may work, but a room with no meaningful daylight usually needs a grow light.

What is the hardest houseplant to kill in low light?

Snake plant, ZZ plant, cast-iron plant, solid-green pothos, heart-leaf philodendron, and Chinese evergreen are among the most forgiving choices. They still need drainage and should not be kept constantly wet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are variegated plants good for low-light rooms?

Usually not. Variegated plants often need more light than solid-green forms and may lose color or become less vigorous in a very dim room.

When should I use a grow light for a low-light plant?

Use an LED grow light when growth becomes weak or stretched, leaves become pale, or the room has little meaningful daylight. Illinois Extension gives 14–16 hours as a general supplemental-light duration with a daily dark period.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Snake plant, ZZ plant, cast-iron plant, green pothos, heart-leaf philodendron, and Chinese evergreen are the safest choices for a genuinely dim room. Match watering to the plant, use drainage, treat variegated and filtered-light plants as more demanding, and add an LED grow light when the room has little usable daylight.
