Villa Ris is a completed 320 m² single-family home in Ris, Oslo, designed by R21 Arkitekter and completed in 2025. Its defining move is a pair of angled cubic volumes that connect the new home to a neighboring house owned by a relative of the owners while shaping courtyards and garden connections of their own.
Where Villa Ris is and who designed it
The house stands in Ris, a residential neighborhood of detached homes in the Oslo metropolitan area. R21 Arkitekter designed the project for a family with children. The firm lists the house at 320 m² and marks it completed in 2025; ArchDaily gives the same area and year and credits Martin Smedsrud as lead architect.
R21 Arkitekter’s project page includes photographs and two plan images. The project description is also reproduced in ArchDaily’s Villa Ris feature, published October 6, 2026.
How the house relates to its neighbor
Villa Ris is a new single-family home conceived in relation to a neighboring house owned by one of the owners’ relatives. The architect’s description frames this as a relationship between two homes, not work that renovates or extends the neighboring building.

The trapezoidal plot is described as a natural continuation of the neighboring property. R21’s description, reproduced by ArchDaily, summarizes the composition as “Two bodies, two directions.” One cubic volume follows the neighboring house’s direction; the second turns perpendicular to the street, pulling away from the neighboring plot and introducing a new axis within the site. Their angled meeting creates intermediate spaces, courtyards and routes into the gardens.
The geometry balances continuity with separation: one volume takes its cue from the nearby house, while the other establishes a distinct orientation. The architects describe this as “creating a dialogue between continuity and tension.” These are phrases from the project description, not quotations from a named interview.

Materials and relationship to the setting
The architect-provided description places a cream-colored rendered base against the ground, following the site’s topography. Timber and copper form the envelope above it. The stated intent is for the colors to draw on neighboring homes and connect the new house to its setting.
ArchDaily also tags the project with wood, glass and concrete. Those are broad material categories rather than a detailed specification: the available project information does not identify where glass or concrete appear, their finishes, manufacturers, or product models.

Area and completion date
R21 Arkitekter and ArchDaily both list Villa Ris at 320 m² and date it to 2025. A conflicting B-Consult search-result listing gives 350 m² and 2022–2023, but the full consultant page was not available for review and the discrepancy is unexplained. The sources do not establish whether the different figures reflect project phases or different area definitions. For the completed project profile, the architect’s and ArchDaily’s matching figures are the clearest documented values.
The available project material does not report a budget, energy use, performance results, sustainability certification, planning history, or detailed construction specifications. It also does not identify the owners or a product schedule.
