The three approaches below are distinct construction methods described by university extension services: a fabric-lined pocket wall, a pallet planted flat and raised after rooting, and an enclosed planter with a rigid back and stable support. If you plan to grow food, inspect the pallet markings and condition before you build.
Compare the three vertical pallet garden designs
| Design | Mounting approach | How soil is retained | Establishment method | Best fit | Watering and support considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric-lined pocket wall | Secure to a wall or fence | Landscape fabric or weed cloth stapled behind and along the sides; chicken wire can support wide gaps | Plant through openings after the liner and growing medium are installed | A planted wall where a sound structure is available for attachment | Water access must reach the mounted pallet; inspect the liner for sagging |
| Planted-flat pallet, raised after establishment | Set upright after rooting, then secure it | Fabric-backed pallet filled with potting mix | Keep horizontal for one to two weeks so plants take root | Plants that benefit from settling before the frame is vertical | Start watering at the top so water moves downward; drip irrigation is an alternative |
| Mounted planter with protected back | Mounted or stabilized with brackets or feet; freestanding units need load-bearing feet | Plywood attached to the back and bottom with outdoor-rated screws | Build and stabilize the container before filling and planting | A more enclosed planter or a freestanding screen | Add a moisture barrier behind the pallet near a house wall; secure the loaded unit before filling |
These are construction approaches, not tested products or a performance ranking. The details come from guidance by Kentucky State University, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Choose and inspect the pallet before building
Read the treatment stamp
For an edible garden, do not assume that every pallet is interchangeable. North Carolina State University Extension explains that pallet stamps can include origin and treatment information. HT means heat-treated, DB means debarked, and KD means kiln-dried. KD alone does not establish that the wood received the temperatures used for heat treatment. Reject a pallet marked MB, and reject one with no origin or treatment information. As the NC State handbook puts it: “It is better, however, to reject a pallet without origin and treatment information.” See the full guidance in the NC State Extension Gardener Handbook.

Reject contamination and damaged wood
Do not use a pallet with visible spills, stains, or unusual discoloration. Auburn University recommends clean, unpainted wood for food planters and gives the same visual rejection rule in its pallet planter guidance. Avoid cracked boards, loose blocks, protruding nails, and rot that could fail once wet soil is added. Wear gloves while inspecting and dismantling or trimming boards.
Plan the final location before adding weight
Measure the wall or fence, identify the direction of sunlight, and locate a hose or irrigation line before the pallet is loaded. A pallet filled with wet potting mix is difficult to move safely. Kentucky State University advises locating the garden near its eventual placement before filling and stabilizing it with a suitable mounting method. Never rely on a loose lean for a tall or heavy planter.
Design 1: Fabric-lined pocket wall
This is the most open and wall-oriented design. The pallet acts as a frame while fabric holds the growing medium in the spaces between boards. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes mounting this style to a fence or wall and planting through holes cut in the weed-block lining.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaterials
- A sound pallet with acceptable treatment markings and no contamination
- Landscape fabric or weed cloth
- Scissors, a staple gun, and staples
- Potting mix and plants
- Chicken wire if the pallet boards are widely spaced and the liner needs front support
- Appropriate wall- or fence-mounting hardware
Build sequence
- Brush loose debris from the pallet and check every board, block, and nail. Repair or discard the frame before lining it.
- Cut fabric large enough to cover the back and run along the sides. Staple it tightly to the rear faces and side edges so the growing medium cannot spill through the openings.
- If the gaps are broad, attach chicken wire across the front to keep the fabric from bowing outward under the weight of wet mix.
- Mount the empty pallet to the wall or fence with hardware rated for the loaded weight. Confirm that the support is sound and that the pallet is not twisting.
- Add potting mix to the lined pockets. Press it into corners and seams, but do not overfill to the point that the fabric pulls away from the staples.
- Cut openings in the lining where each plant will go, insert the roots, and close the fabric around the stem. UC ANR specifically describes cutting holes in the weed-block lining for root insertion.
- Water thoroughly and check for leaks or sagging before adding more plants. Re-staple or reinforce any pocket that moves.
Because this design is permanently vertical, it is easiest when you already have a dependable wall or fence and can reach every pocket for planting and irrigation. Leave enough clearance to inspect the back and hardware.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Design 2: Plant the pallet flat, then raise it
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s method lets gravity settle the mix and gives young roots time to grip before the pallet becomes a vertical surface. It is useful when you want a living wall but do not want freshly planted pockets to shift immediately.
Materials and project-specific soil volumes
- A pallet, landscape fabric or weed cloth, staples, potting mix, and plants
- Mounting hardware suitable for the final wall, fence, or support
- Optional drip irrigation components
Kentucky State University’s sheet says one standard 40 × 48-inch pallet in its horizontal design may require up to five cubic feet of potting mix. Texas A&M’s smaller 25 × 38-inch pallet guide uses about 2.5 cubic feet of potting soil. Those quantities belong to the dimensions and configurations in the respective instructions; they are not universal estimates for every pallet.
Build sequence
- Lay the pallet flat in the area where you can safely work and later lift it. Cover the back and sides with landscape fabric or weed cloth and staple it securely.
- Add potting mix evenly across the pallet. Avoid creating a thin layer at the top that will fall out when the frame is raised.
- Plant from the lower sections upward, following Texas A&M’s sequence. This keeps the lower openings accessible while you work and helps distribute the plants through the frame.
- Water the entire pallet thoroughly while it remains horizontal.
- Leave the planted pallet flat for one to two weeks so roots can take hold. Check moisture during this period; the mix should not be allowed to dry completely.
- Lift the pallet with enough help or equipment for its loaded weight, set it upright, and secure it to its final support.
- For routine watering, begin at the top. Texas A&M notes that water seeps down to lower plants; a drip system can provide a more controlled alternative.
Do not skip the horizontal establishment period simply because the pallet looks stable. Roots are what help hold the mix and plants in place once gravity acts on the vertical face.
Design 3: Mounted planter with a protected back
This approach creates a more enclosed container than a fabric-only frame. A rigid back and bottom retain mix, while brackets or feet provide a deliberate load path into a wall or the ground.

Materials
- A pallet and landscape fabric or weed cloth
- Plywood for the back and bottom
- Outdoor-rated screws and a drill or driver
- Potting mix and plants
- Brackets for wall mounting or feet for a freestanding unit
- A moisture barrier where the planter will stand against a house wall or another moisture-sensitive structure
Build sequence
- Place the pallet near its permanent location while it is still empty.
- Cut plywood panels for the back and bottom and attach them with outdoor-rated screws. Line interior seams with landscape fabric or weed cloth where needed to contain the mix.
- Install brackets, feet, or another support system before filling. Feet must be sized and positioned to carry the wet load without rocking.
- Add a moisture barrier behind the planter if it is close to a house wall. Kentucky State University notes that this barrier can reduce moisture seeping from soil into the structure.
- Test the empty planter for movement, then fill it with potting mix and plant it. Do not fill a unit that has not yet been secured.
- Water slowly and inspect the bottom, corners, screws, and support points for leakage or deflection.
The protected-back design is heavier than an open fabric frame because it uses plywood and holds a deeper, more enclosed mass. Treat the support as a structural component, not an accessory.

Match plants to the light
North Carolina State University Extension recommends at least six hours of direct sun daily for a vegetable garden, with eight to ten hours ideal. Leafy and root crops tolerate shade better than flowering and fruiting crops such as peppers and tomatoes. Check the actual sun pattern at the wall or fence rather than relying on a general assumption about the yard.
UC ANR lists succulents and salad greens as options for vertical gardens. Succulents require excellent drainage. Leafy greens benefit from regular watering and feeding, so they are a better match for a location where you can reach the pallet often.

Expect container-style watering
All three designs behave more like containers than in-ground beds. UC ANR notes that container gardens need more frequent watering, and nutrients can wash out, so container-grown plants may also need more frequent fertilizer. The frequency depends on weather, plant size, exposure, and the depth of the mix; inspect the growing medium and plants rather than following a fixed calendar.

Plan irrigation before mounting. A tall structure may be easier to manage with drip irrigation, while a hand-watered pallet needs a clear route to every pocket. In the planted-flat design, start at the top so water can move downward. In a fabric pocket wall, watch the lowest pockets for both drying and excess runoff.
Protect drainage paths
Do not seal every opening or block the bottom so completely that water has nowhere to leave. Succulents are particularly vulnerable to poor drainage. After the first thorough watering, look for pooling, leaking seams, or a sudden bow in the liner and correct the construction before roots fill the pockets.
Troubleshooting and safety checks
- The liner sags between boards: Add front-supporting chicken wire, tighten the fabric, and add staples along the side and rear edges.
- Soil falls out while the pallet is raised: The pockets were not adequately contained or plants had not rooted. Re-secure the fabric, remove loose mix, and allow the flat-first method one to two weeks of rooting before lifting.
- The wall shows dampness: Install a moisture barrier behind a rigid-back planter and provide clearance or drainage so water does not remain against the structure.
- The planter rocks or pulls away from its support: Stop watering, unload it if necessary, and add properly placed brackets or load-bearing feet. Do not continue using a loose lean.
- Upper plants stay wet while lower pockets dry: Check that water is reaching the entire face. In a vertical frame, water from the top and observe how it travels; a drip line can improve distribution.
- Plants wilt soon after watering: Inspect for blocked drainage, compacted mix, or a leaking pocket. Container walls can dry faster than ground beds, especially in sun and wind.
- You cannot verify the pallet stamp or see stains: Reject the pallet and choose a clean, unpainted frame with origin and treatment information instead.
Which design should you choose?
- Choose the fabric-lined pocket wall when you have a sturdy fence or wall, want the lightest visual construction, and can reach the mounted pockets for regular watering.
- Choose the planted-flat method when you want plants to root before the frame is vertical and can safely lift and secure a loaded pallet after one to two weeks.
- Choose the protected-back planter when soil retention, wall protection, or freestanding stability matters more than minimum weight. Budget for plywood, outdoor-rated screws, a moisture barrier, and brackets or feet.
Whichever approach you use, treat the pallet as a support system carrying wet soil, not merely as a decorative frame. Verify the wood, design the load path, provide drainage and water access, and select plants that match the available direct sun.
