American Hearth’s Franklin VFPC20IN and VFPC28IN are manufacturer-documented examples of vent-free gas fireplace inserts that include a blower. The available information does not establish which has the more powerful blower, runs more quietly, or circulates more heat, so neither can be called a tested “best.” Before choosing one, confirm the exact model’s fit, fuel, approved installation, local acceptance, and blower specifications.
Which vent-free inserts include a blower?
The American Hearth Franklin vent-free insert line is a concrete starting point: the manufacturer says every Franklin vent-free insert includes a blower and lists the VFPC20IN and VFPC28IN. Its product information does not provide a blower airflow rating, noise level, or comparative heat-circulation test, so it cannot support a ranking between those models. A blower is not standard on every vent-free insert. The Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance says “some offer a blower for improved heat distribution.” That is category-level information from an industry association, not a specification for any particular appliance. What does “vent-free” mean for your room?
Vent-free describes where combustion products go: unlike a vented fireplace, the appliance does not route them outdoors through a flue. They are released into the room where the unit is installed. A 2012 Consumer Product Safety Commission docket document says unvented gas fireplaces are required by ANSI Z21.11.2 to include an oxygen-depletion safety shutoff. The document also states that it was not reviewed or accepted by the Commission, so it is background information, not a current compliance determination. Combustion appliances can affect indoor air. The CPSC’s indoor-air guide identifies unvented gas heaters as sources of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and particles, and discusses possible health effects. How to compare models before buying
Start with the appliance’s own current product page and installation manual. A blower may help distribute heat, but without comparable airflow, sound, and testing data, the word “powerful” cannot be verified across models. Use the following checks to narrow the options:
- Confirm the exact blower configuration. Verify whether the blower is included with the precise model number, which controls or operating modes it has, and whether the manufacturer publishes airflow or sound specifications. Treat undocumented performance as unknown.
- Measure the fireplace and check clearances. Compare the existing opening and installation space with the manufacturer’s dimensions and required clearances. A unit’s nominal size alone does not prove it will fit.
- Match the fuel. Check whether the model is configured for natural gas or propane and whether that fuel is available at the home. Do not assume a model supports both.
- Compare published heat and control details. Note the stated BTU input, burner type, and controls for each model. These figures describe the product as specified; they do not establish actual heat distribution or savings in a particular room.
- Check approval for your location and installation. Confirm local code acceptance and the manufacturer’s approved installation configuration before purchase. Bluegrass Living’s B100TP listing says it is not for sale to California residents and links to state-by-state code information; that notice applies to that listing, not to every brand or model.
- Ask about ownership support. Confirm who can service the appliance and whether replacement parts and warranty terms are documented for the exact model.
The Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance claims vent-free products operate at 99% efficiency, but that is a broad category-level industry claim—not an independently tested efficiency result for the Franklin models or any other specific insert in this comparison. Installation and blower safety
Use only accessories the manufacturer approves for the exact appliance. Monessen’s VFI33 owner manual (Rev H, January 2020) warns: “Do not use a blower insert, heat exchanger insert or other accessory, not approved for use with this heater where applicable.” This warning is specific to the VFI33, but it illustrates why a generic add-on fan should not be assumed safe or permitted on another model. The same manual says the heater needs the required indoor combustion and ventilation air under the National Fuel Gas Code, International Fuel Gas Code, or applicable local codes. Requirements vary by appliance and location, so the selected model’s manual and local authority—not another brand’s instructions—must govern the installation. Have the work completed in accordance with applicable requirements.
