A gardening gift does not have to be something one person unwraps and uses alone. Choose a project you can plan, make, or plant together: a shared container, kitchen herbs, a pollinator planter, seeds for a future garden, a handmade seed-paper card, or painted plant markers. You can do many of these on a windowsill, balcony, patio, or in a yard. In colder regions, treat February 14 as a day to prepare or start indoors; wait to plant outdoors until conditions suit the chosen plants and local frost risk has passed.
Choose a project that fits your space and season
Before you buy plants or seeds, consider where the project will live, how much light it gets, and how much care you both want to give it. Plants sharing one pot need compatible light, water, soil, and temperature requirements. Containers also dry out faster than garden beds, so they need regular checks.
| Project | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Shared container garden | Patio, balcony, or sunny windowsill, depending on plant choice | A flexible design project; choose plants with compatible growing needs. |
| Culinary herb pot | Kitchen windowsill, doorstep, or patio | A practical edible planting; suitable herbs depend on local conditions and available light. |
| Pollinator planter | Balcony, patio, or yard with a suitable light level | Can support pollinators in a small space; bloom timing and establishment depend on plant choice. |
| Seed-packet gift | Any space where a future garden can be planned | Seeds can be a budget-friendly start, but may take a few seasons to mature. |
| Seed-paper card | A low-space craft project with a planting spot planned for later | Personal and inexpensive to make; the paper must dry fully before gifting. |
| Painted stones or plant labels | Indoor craft table, garden, or container collection | Easy to personalize; outdoor-painted stones benefit from a protective seal. |
For container inspiration, UGA Extension’s container-gardening guidance explains how to combine plants by role and care needs.
1. Design a shared container garden
Make one planter a joint design: each person can choose a color, texture, or plant, then arrange the combination together. UGA Extension describes a useful composition as “thriller, filler and spiller”: a taller focal plant, plants that fill the middle, and plants that trail over the edge.

What you need
- A clean planter large enough for the plants at mature size, with drainage holes
- Potting mix formulated for containers, not ordinary garden topsoil
- Plants suited to the planter’s light and climate, with compatible water, soil, fertilizer, and temperature needs
- Gloves and a small hand trowel
How to plant it
- Check the available light and choose plants that can share the same conditions.
- Arrange the tallest plant as the focal point, fill around it, and place trailing plants near the edge if you want that effect.
- Plant in container mix, water thoroughly, and check the soil regularly. Water when it feels dry, rather than assuming one schedule fits every pot.
2. Pot a culinary herb garden
A pot of herbs makes a gift you can use in the kitchen as well as tend together. UGA’s Valentine’s suggestions include herb pots paired with small garden tools or recipes. Decide first where the pot will sit: a bright windowsill, kitchen door, or patio can each suit different herbs, but there is no universal herb combination or planting calendar.
Choose herbs for your local growing conditions and the light available. Use a container with drainage and potting mix for containers. If you combine several herbs in one pot, check that they have similar water and light needs; separate pots make it easier to meet different preferences.

3. Build a pollinator-friendly planter
A pollinator garden does not require a large yard. Cornell Cooperative Extension describes options ranging from a decorative planter to a small bed or larger landscape. For a container, select plants suited to your region and site, and aim for a succession of blooms so the planting can offer flowers at different times.
Match plants to the site
Many pollinator-friendly plants need at least six hours of sun each day, according to Cornell Cooperative Extension Monroe County, but this is not a universal rule: the right light level depends on the species, and partial-shade choices are available. Choose locally adapted native plants where possible, and group only plants with similar light, soil, and water needs in the same container. Illinois Extension’s container guidance for pollinators also emphasizes matching choices to sun or shade and allowing for mature plant size.

Choose seeds or established plants
Growing a pollinator planting from seed can cost less, but Cornell notes that it may take a few seasons to mature. Plugs or more established plants can establish and flower sooner. Follow the seed packet or plant label for regional suitability and sowing or planting directions rather than assuming February is the right outdoor planting time.
Containers dry faster than in-ground beds, so check moisture regularly. Cornell’s pollinator garden guidance covers small-space options, plant selection, and establishment.

4. Make a seed-starting date or seed-packet gift
If outdoor planting must wait, make the gift a shared plan: choose seeds for a future bed or containers, label where each will go, and set a date to start them according to the packet. UGA GreenWay suggests presenting seeds in a repurposed candy box for a greener Valentine’s gift.
Pick seeds suited to your region and follow the packet’s sowing directions. A seed gift is a promise of a project, not an immediate bloom: growing from seed can take longer to establish than starting with plugs or mature plants. UGA GreenWay’s greener Valentine’s ideas also include herb pots and small tools.

5. Make plantable seed-paper cards
A seed-paper card can be a message and a future planting project in one. UF/IFAS recommends non-glossy, uncoated recyclable paper and seeds appropriate for the recipient’s region.
Make the paper
- Shred the paper and blend it with water into pulp.
- Fold seeds into the pulp, then press it into a thin sheet or into cookie-cutter shapes.
- Blot away excess water and let the paper dry fully in a warm place with airflow.
Thin paper dries sooner and reduces the risk of seeds sprouting before the card is planted. Once dry, decorate it or use it as a gift tag. Include simple planting directions so the recipient knows where and how to use it. UF/IFAS’s gifts-from-the-garden guide describes the process.
6. Paint garden stones or plant labels
Turn smooth stones into decorative garden accents or use labels to mark herbs and other plants. UF/IFAS suggests washing the stones, sanding rough areas if needed, applying primer or acrylic paint, and adding details with markers or paint pens. For stones that will stay outdoors, finish with acrylic varnish to help protect the paint from weather.
If the labels need to identify plants, make the writing large and weather-resistant. This craft can be done indoors in February, then placed outside when the garden is ready.
