UW–Madison broke ground October 23, 2026, on a $62 million expansion of the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR) East Wedge cyclotron laboratory in Madison. The 13,000-square-foot addition will install a 30 MeV cyclotron and a TR-ALPHA alpha-particle cyclotron, add shielded laboratory and support space, and expand production of medical radioisotopes. The latest official schedule calls for completion in May 2028.

When did UW–Madison start construction on the cyclotron expansion?

The UW School of Medicine and Public Health announced the groundbreaking on October 23, 2026. The addition will be built inside the existing WIMR complex on Highland Avenue, between two research buildings, rather than as a separate campus facility.

Funding combines National Institutes of Health grants, support from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and private donations. UW’s announcement describes the project as an expansion of an existing laboratory that already ships radioisotopes nationally through the U.S. Department of Energy University Isotope Network.

How much does the project cost, and what changed from the original plan?

The current project budget is $62 million. The Wisconsin Board of Regents originally authorized a $48.5 million, two-story addition in 2024. During design, UW determined that the cyclotron needed more substantial infrastructure and that no construction could take place above the machine once it was installed. A 2025 Regents approval added “white-box” floors that can be fitted out later for laboratories, clinical work or industry collaboration, increasing the budget by $13.5 million.

Radiation shielding Eight-foot-thick concrete Shielding planned around the cyclotron areas

What equipment and laboratories will the new building contain?

The centerpiece is a commercial 30 MeV cyclotron in the basement. The facility will also house a modern TR-ALPHA alpha-particle cyclotron, BSL2 laboratory space, offices and mechanical infrastructure. Eight-foot-thick concrete shielding is planned to contain radiation generated during operation.

The design leaves additional white-box space for future laboratories, clinical applications or companies working with UW researchers. That approach recognizes that cyclotron equipment and its utilities are difficult to modify after installation, while research programs and clinical partnerships can change over time.

What will the cyclotrons produce?

Cyclotrons accelerate charged particles into targets to create medical radioisotopes. UW expects the new facility to increase production capacity by two- to eight-fold, depending on the isotope. The planned portfolio includes short-lived Astatine-211, an alpha-emitting isotope being studied for targeted cancer treatment.

How could the expansion affect cancer treatment and medical imaging?

Radioisotopes can be attached to molecules that seek particular tissues or disease markers. In diagnostic applications, they support PET or SPECT scans; in therapy, the radioactive payload can deliver radiation to diseased cells while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue.

UW lists potential applications in cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart conditions, tissue injury and chronic pain. The expansion is intended to connect isotope production with radiochemistry, molecular imaging, clinical care and UW Health theranostic trials in one research environment.

Jonathan Engle, a UW–Madison associate professor of medical physics and radiology, told Wisconsin Public Radio that the new machine will make therapeutic radionuclides “at the absolute forefront of cancer treatment.” That statement describes the research and treatment potential; it does not mean every isotope or therapy will be immediately available to patients. Clinical use still depends on laboratory validation, regulatory requirements, trial protocols and clinical supply.

What does “theranostics” mean in this project?

Theranostics combines diagnosis and treatment around a related targeting molecule. A diagnostic radioisotope can help show whether a target is present, while a therapeutic isotope can deliver radiation to cells carrying that target. The expanded laboratory is meant to support the full chain from isotope production and radiochemistry through imaging, trials and eventual patient care.

When will the WIMR East Wedge facility be finished?

UW’s current official target is May 2028. A September 2025 Regents planning record had anticipated substantial completion in spring 2027, so May 2028 is the later and most current public milestone.

Environmental review and site preparation

The project followed Wisconsin’s Environmental Policy Act process. The review began in 2024, public comments were accepted from September 2 through September 16, 2025, and the final assessment was posted November 11, 2025. Those steps preceded the 2026 groundbreaking.

How will the expansion affect research, training and Wisconsin’s economy?

UW plans to use the space as a training environment for molecular imaging, radiopharmaceutical science and precision medicine. Provost John Zumbrunnen said scientists, clinicians, engineers, radiochemists, pharmacists and other health professionals will be able to learn across isotope production, radiochemistry, molecular imaging and theranostics.

University leaders also expect the facility to support biotech start-ups, industry partnerships and regional radiopharmaceutical manufacturing. Vice dean for research Anjon Audhya described the project as a potential national hub for theranostics innovation, while medical school dean Nita Ahuja emphasized placing research, imaging and clinical care together so therapies can be developed with greater precision.

The national distribution role is an extension of work UW–Madison has carried out for about a decade through the Department of Energy University Isotope Network. Higher output could give researchers and clinical programs access to isotopes that decay too quickly for long-distance shipment or are difficult to obtain consistently.

What should observers watch as construction proceeds?

  • Whether the May 2028 completion target changes as shielding, mechanical systems and cyclotron installation advance.
  • When the 30 MeV and TR-ALPHA machines are installed, commissioned and cleared for production.
  • Which isotopes enter routine production and whether the projected two- to eight-fold capacity increase is achieved for specific isotopes.
  • How quickly the white-box floors are assigned to UW laboratories, clinical programs or industry collaborators.
  • Which theranostic clinical trials and workforce-training programs begin once the facility is operational.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 30 MeV cyclotron used for?

The 30 MeV rating describes the maximum energy range of the accelerated particles, which helps determine the target materials and radioisotopes the machine can produce. Actual output depends on target design, operating schedules, chemistry and quality-control requirements.

Why is Astatine-211 important for cancer research?

Astatine-211 emits alpha particles that travel only a short distance in tissue but release substantial energy. Researchers are studying whether molecules carrying the isotope can selectively damage cancer cells while reducing radiation to surrounding tissue; availability remains a key practical constraint because it is short-lived.

Will patients receive treatment at the new laboratory as soon as it opens?

Not necessarily. The facility is designed to support research, isotope production and UW Health clinical trials, but each therapy must meet manufacturing, safety, regulatory and trial requirements before routine patient treatment.

Why does the project need such thick concrete shielding?

Cyclotrons generate high-energy radiation when particles strike targets. Thick, engineered shielding helps protect workers, patients and the surrounding WIMR buildings; the final operating controls also include specialized mechanical and safety systems.
