For a Halloween garden, combine bright orange flowers with blooms or foliage that reads as near-black or deep purple. Truly black plants are not available, so the effect comes from dark tones, repeated through the bed or planter to frame the orange accents. The best choices depend on your local climate and whether you want a container display or an in-ground planting.
Build the palette around orange and near-black
Think of “black” as a visual effect, not a literal flower color. Deep-purple or very dark foliage and blooms create contrast with orange without promising a true-black plant. The Associated Press’s gardening guide likewise describes the dark side of the palette as near-black rather than truly black (Associated Press).
Use orange as the focal accent, then repeat the dark color in several places so it gives the arrangement structure. A mix of orange flowers and dark foliage can work in a garden bed or a seasonal container. UF/IFAS Extension Polk County suggests refreshing an existing container for the season; many kinds of containers can be used, provided they suit the planting (UF/IFAS Extension Polk County).
Choose flowers for beds and planters
Orange marigolds
Marigolds are one of UF/IFAS Extension Polk County’s orange choices for spooky-season planters. Use them as a bright block of color among dark-leaved plants, or repeat them along the front of a bed. The extension guidance is for seasonal containers; check local planting guidance for timing in your area.

Orange and dark pansies
Orange and blackish pansies can be planted in beds or planters, according to the Associated Press. Their dark tones are best understood as near-black, often deep purple, rather than pure black. Pansies are a practical choice when you want the two colors close together in one planting, but flowering time depends on climate and cultivar.
‘Prairie Sun’ Black-Eyed Susan
For a taller, sunny accent, UW–Madison Extension describes ‘Prairie Sun’ Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) as having yellow daisy-like flowers with an orange blush and green centers. It grows about three feet tall and can be planted in masses, meadows, or cutting gardens (UW–Madison Extension). Its flowers are yellow with orange tones, not solid orange, so use it as a warm-color companion rather than a pure-orange substitute.

Add height with a supported vine
Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata) produces orange or yellow flowers with dark centers. UW–Madison Extension recommends growing it on a trellis or other support; it does not cling by itself. In that source’s guidance context, flowering runs from midsummer to frost, but local weather and growing conditions determine whether it will still be blooming at Halloween. The extension also suggests contrasting it with purple or blue flowers, or purple foliage (UW–Madison Extension).
Use dark foliage to frame the flowers
Dark foliage can carry the Halloween look even when flowers are not in bloom. University of Georgia Extension’s Paulding County example pairs black mondo grass and dark coral bells with orange pumpkins and fall mums. Those examples are specifically for Zone 7B; verify local hardiness and performance before choosing them elsewhere (University of Georgia Extension, Paulding County).

Keep the composition simple: place orange blooms where they are easy to see, then use dark foliage as a repeated edge, backdrop, or central anchor. In a container, check that the chosen plants have compatible light and watering needs. In a bed, consider mature plant size and spacing so taller flowers do not hide shorter pansies.

A plant’s color does not guarantee that it will flower on October 31. Frost, regional climate, planting date, and cultivar all affect bloom timing. Treat the plant lists as palette ideas, then confirm the best planting window with local extension guidance or a nearby nursery. If flowers are likely to finish early, rely more on foliage for the dark contrast and choose varieties whose seasonal window fits your garden.
