You can use Alexa from a Windows 11 PC, but the current desktop route is the Alexa+ browser experience at Alexa.com—not a generally downloadable Alexa Windows app. The Amazon Appstore workaround for Windows 11 is also obsolete for new installations. You may need the Alexa mobile app to set up devices before controlling them from your PC.
Can you install Alexa on Windows 11?
Not generally as a new, native Windows app. Amazon staff said Alexa for PC stopped being available for download on March 30, 2023, apart from select computers that shipped with Alexa preinstalled (Amazon’s Alexa for PC availability notice). If you have an Alexa Built-in PC, the app may be available from Start, Windows search, or the taskbar, according to Amazon’s Alexa Built-in FAQ.

Search Start for “Alexa” to check whether your manufacturer included it. If it is not there, do not rely on old instructions to download it from the Microsoft Store.
The other often-recommended route, installing the Alexa mobile app through the Amazon Appstore for Windows, is no longer available for new setups through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft says Windows Subsystem for Android and the Amazon Appstore stopped being available there on March 5, 2025 (Microsoft Support). Use the browser instead of unofficial APK downloads or unsupported workarounds.

Use Alexa from a Windows 11 browser
Amazon describes Alexa+ as available through a browser, the Alexa mobile app, and compatible Alexa-enabled devices. Its browser experience can continue conversations across those supported surfaces, though controls and features may differ (Amazon Alexa+ overview).
- Open an up-to-date browser on your Windows 11 PC and go to Alexa.com.
- Sign in with the Amazon account associated with your Alexa devices.
- Complete any Alexa+ enrollment or account prompts shown for your account.
- Type a request, or use voice input if it is offered and you want to speak.
- Try a simple command for a device you know is online and linked to that account.
For voice input, Windows needs a working microphone and the browser must be allowed to use it. You can still type requests if microphone access is unavailable. Alexa.com is an access point, not a replacement for every mobile-app setup or management control; use the Alexa app when a required option is missing from the browser.

Set up smart-home devices for Alexa
A Windows browser can issue requests to devices already associated with your Alexa account; it does not make an incompatible device controllable. Check the product for a Works with Alexa badge or confirm compatibility with its manufacturer. Depending on the product, setup may also require its own app, an Alexa skill and linked manufacturer account, a hub or bridge, a subscription, or a particular Wi-Fi band. Amazon notes that most smart-home Wi-Fi devices use 2.4 GHz and provides this setup guidance: add a smart-home device to Alexa.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Open the Alexa mobile app and select Devices.
- Select the + icon, then Add Device.
- Choose the device type and then its brand.
- Follow the Alexa and manufacturer prompts, including any account linking or skill setup.
- Assign the device to a room or group, then check that it appears online in the app.
- Test a command from Alexa.com and, if available, from an Echo device.
Use distinctive, natural device names and avoid giving several devices nearly identical names. Room assignments make group commands such as “turn off the downstairs lights” easier to interpret.
Try these smart-home commands
These are examples, not guaranteed wording for every device. A device must support the requested action, be online, and be correctly linked to the account.

- Lights and plugs: “Alexa, turn on the living-room lights.” “Alexa, turn off the bedroom lamp.”
- Thermostat: “Alexa, set the thermostat to 70 degrees.”
- Lock: “Alexa, lock the front door.” Security devices can require additional permissions or authentication, and supported actions vary by model.
- Coffee maker: “Alexa, turn on the coffee maker,” if its smart plug or appliance supports that action.
- Camera: “Alexa, show me the front-door camera,” only if the camera, account, and browser interface support viewing it.
- Routine or scene: “Alexa, turn on movie mode,” if you have created a routine or scene with that name.
Use rooms, groups, scenes, and routines
Rooms and groups let you address several compatible devices together. A “downstairs” group, for example, can make a room-based lights command more useful than naming each bulb. Scenes may be defined by a manufacturer or smart-home platform and can apply a preset combination of settings.

Browser control or an Echo device?
| Need | Windows browser | Echo device |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and setup | Uses a Windows PC and Amazon account; no additional hardware is required for browser access. | Requires an Echo purchase. Some devices may also require separate hubs, skills, subscriptions, or manufacturer accounts. |
| Voice availability | Depends on a working microphone, browser permission, and an available browser session. | Designed for voice access in a room without keeping a PC awake. |
| Microphone and availability | A laptop may be muted, asleep, closed, or have a blocked or weak microphone; a browser session may need to remain open. | Better suited to always-available, hands-free household commands, subject to device power, network, and privacy settings. |
| Smart-home control | Can access compatible devices linked to the signed-in Alexa account; browser controls may differ from the app. | Can issue voice commands to compatible linked devices; capabilities vary by Echo model and device setup. |
| Visual controls | Camera views and other visual features depend on browser, account, camera, and interface support. | Echo models with displays can provide visual controls; features vary by model. |
| Best fit | Occasional control, typed requests, or Alexa access while working at a PC. | Hands-free timers, music, routines, and household control in a room. |
Neither the browser nor an Echo should be assumed to work offline: Alexa services and many connected devices depend on internet access. A PC browser is not an always-listening speaker when the computer is sleeping or the page is unavailable.
Troubleshoot Alexa when a device does not respond
Work through the checks in order, changing one thing at a time:
- Check the account. Confirm Alexa.com is signed into the same Amazon account or household that contains the device.
- Check device status. Look in the Alexa app’s Devices list and the manufacturer app to see whether the device is online.
- Check linking. Reauthorize the manufacturer account or enable the required skill if its connection has expired.
- Check the name and action. Use the device’s exact, distinctive name and verify that it supports the requested command.
- For voice failures, check permissions. Confirm Windows recognizes the intended microphone, the browser site has microphone access, and neither the tab nor site is muted. If permitted on the PC, check that privacy settings or organizational security software are not blocking microphone access. Test by typing if voice still fails.
- Check network and hardware requirements. Some devices require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a compatible hub or bridge, or a working connection to the manufacturer’s service. Complete setup in the manufacturer app first when required.
- Reconnect only if needed. Follow the manufacturer’s reset and re-pairing instructions, then add or discover the device again in Alexa. Some products have limits on linked accounts or hubs.
Locks and cameras may impose extra authentication, permissions, regional restrictions, or subscription requirements. Alexa may support a basic command without supporting every camera view, recording function, automation, or lock-management feature. Amazon notes that some Ring features require additional subscriptions (Amazon’s U.S. Alexa+ availability announcement).
