US expanded polystyrene (EPS) prices are being shaped by feedstock costs, resin availability and downstream buying—not by a direct, automatic pass-through from styrene. In June 2026, market-service reporting tied falling styrene and improving availability to lower EPS prices. In August, the same service said higher replacement costs did not produce a comparable price lift because supply was comfortable and spot buyers remained cautious. A separate government-origin index for building and construction polystyrene foam products rose from March to August, but it is not a quote for EPS resin.
What is moving US EPS prices?
Three forces matter: the cost of inputs, how readily resin is available, and how strongly buyers are purchasing. A change in styrene can influence producers’ costs, but it does not by itself determine the price buyers pay. If supply is ample or customers delay purchases, sellers may have limited ability to pass higher costs through.

Styrene is a material input, not a public pricing formula
Intratec describes a typical modeled US process as batch suspension polymerization using styrene. The resulting small spheres are impregnated with a physical blowing agent. That production route explains why styrene costs are relevant to EPS, but the public description does not establish a complete cost share or a fixed pass-through formula or lag. June’s decline and August’s limited pass-through
ChemAnalyst reported that US EPS prices fell 5.24% month over month in June 2026 and continued declining in early July. The service attributed the June movement to a roughly 10.5% mid-June fall in styrene, recovering domestic availability and tepid buying. In an article published September 7, 2026, ChemAnalyst described a different August balance: higher benzene-related replacement costs raised upstream costs, yet comfortable resin availability and cautious spot buying limited downstream pass-through. What the public price index does—and does not—show
The strongest public trend indicator in the available evidence is the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics series PCU3261403261403, distributed through FRED. It covers building and construction polystyrene foam products, is not seasonally adjusted, and uses December 2003=100. It is a product-category index, not a direct spot or contract quote for EPS resin.

The series page reports data through August 2026 and an update dated September 10, 2026. The index rose between the two months shown, but that movement should not be read as an EPS resin transaction-price change. How construction and packaging demand affect the balance
Construction insulation is one source of demand
In its summer 2026 commentary, ChemAnalyst attributed restrained purchases of insulation-grade EPS to soft construction demand in the United States. Packaging is also important, but global shares are not US shares
EPS serves packaging as well as construction. S&P Global Commodity Insights reported in its June 2025 Chemical Economics Handbook abstract that packaging had become the largest global EPS consumption market after surpassing building and construction in 2020. It describes packaging as cushioning for fragile goods, with electronics and appliances among the principal growth drivers; building and construction is the second-largest global market, including insulation uses. ChemAnalyst described US protective-packaging demand as mixed in its summer 2026 account. In its August discussion, it identified packaging for appliances, electronics and durable goods as a demand base, while noting restrictions on food-service EPS packaging in some jurisdictions. Why supply can outweigh a feedstock rally
Availability changes how much cost pressure sellers can pass on. ChemAnalyst cited normalization at the Joliet facility and continued imports as factors improving supply during the summer of 2026. When buyers have options and remain cautious, producers may compete for orders rather than raise prices in line with replacement costs. Conversely, constrained availability can strengthen sellers’ pricing position even when demand is not accelerating.

What buyers and construction teams can conclude
- Use the BLS-origin index to follow the construction polystyrene foam product category, not to price an EPS resin purchase.
- Treat market-service price changes and outlooks as attributed assessments; they are not interchangeable with an official index.
- For a real purchase, confirm the grade, delivery location, freight basis, contract terms and quotation date directly with suppliers. The reviewed sources do not establish a consistent US spot and contract series by grade, region and delivery terms, so they cannot support one current headline resin price.
- Do not assume that a styrene move will be passed through immediately or in a fixed proportion. Check supply conditions and customer buying alongside input costs.
Longer-term outlook is global, not a US forecast
