In an announcement dated November 3, 2023, Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) listed an ecobee Premium Smart Thermostat at $119 through a regional program. - New, refurbished or used condition.
- Seller identity, return policy and warranty coverage.
- Whether the price requires a utility enrollment, coupon or instant rebate.
- Shipping, taxes and any deadline or service-territory restriction.

The Essential is the logical starting point when the priority is replacing a basic thermostat at the lowest official price. Premium costs substantially more but may be worthwhile if room-by-room comfort information and higher-end controls matter in your home. A discount should not determine the choice until you confirm which model the $120 listing actually includes.

Will an ecobee work with your HVAC system?
Use ecobee’s compatibility checker before ordering and enter the wires and equipment shown at your existing thermostat. ecobee says every ecobee smart thermostat is compatible with more than 90% of 24-volt heating and cooling systems, and says its Power Extender Kit works universally with ecobee smart thermostats. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee for every installation.
Systems that need extra care
- Line-voltage electric heat, millivolt systems and unusual proprietary controls may not be compatible.
- Multi-stage, heat-pump, dual-fuel and accessory systems require an accurate wiring and equipment check.
- If the checker gives an uncertain result, have an HVAC professional identify the system before removing the old thermostat.
Installation checklist for a winter replacement
- Photograph the existing thermostat wiring and label each conductor by its terminal, not only by wire color.
- Turn off HVAC power at the breaker or service switch.
- Run ecobee’s compatibility check using the labeled terminals and equipment type.
- Install the wall plate and connect wires exactly as the installation instructions specify. Use the Power Extender Kit if the confirmed system requires it.
- Restore power, complete the on-screen setup and test heating, cooling, fan operation and any heat-pump or accessory modes.
- Set a schedule and verify that the thermostat reaches the target temperature without short cycling.
Do not rely on a bargain price to justify bypassing the compatibility check. Incorrect wiring can damage equipment or leave a home without reliable heat.

Can ecobee lower winter heating bills?
ecobee reports that select North American customers saved up to 23% on heating and cooling costs in an internal analysis conducted in April 2021. “Up to” describes an upper-bound company result, not a guaranteed household saving. Actual results depend on insulation, weather, equipment efficiency, occupancy, schedule settings and how much your old thermostat was already optimized.

ecobee’s Community Energy Savings program says participating energy providers may pay customers up to $125. During an event, the provider can pre-cool or pre-heat homes during non-peak hours and then adjust the thermostat slightly during peak demand. Customers can opt out of an event, while eligibility, payment and event rules vary by provider and location.

Check your electric or gas utility’s current rebate and demand-response terms before assuming that a $120 price or $125 reward applies. Confirm the service territory, eligible ecobee model, enrollment deadline, installation requirements and whether incentives can be combined.

- Buy: the listing identifies a new, compatible model, the seller is legitimate, warranty terms are clear and the final checkout price remains favorable after shipping and taxes.
- Wait: the offer does not state the model, requires an unexplained code, has no return policy or conflicts with your HVAC wiring.
- Choose Premium instead: you specifically want its additional room-sensing and comfort features and can verify a local rebate that narrows the price gap.
For most winter upgrades, compatibility and verified incentives matter more than the headline number. Compare the documented final cost with the official $139.99 Essential price, then decide whether Premium’s added features justify its $259.99 list price.
