Unscrewing the Mystery: How to Determine Which Way to Turn a Screw

For a conventional right-hand screw, look straight at the screw head: turn it clockwise to tighten and counterclockwise to loosen. The familiar memory aid is “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.” This describes the thread direction, not which hand holds the tool.

The standard rule: clockwise tightens

Most screws and threaded fasteners use right-hand threads. Viewed from the head, clockwise rotation advances the screw into its mating thread; counterclockwise rotation backs it out.

This follows the engineering right-hand rule: curl the fingers of your right hand in the direction of rotation and your thumb points along the screw’s advance. For a right-hand thread, clockwise rotation therefore drives the fastener forward.

Thread type Viewed at the screw head Result
Right-hand (standard) Clockwise Tightens
Right-hand (standard) Counterclockwise Loosens
Left-hand (reverse) Counterclockwise Tightens
Left-hand (reverse) Clockwise Loosens

Always judge the direction from the screw head

“Clockwise” means the direction you see while looking directly at the screw head. Looking from the opposite end reverses the apparent direction, so do not use the orientation of the threaded shaft, the tool handle, or your own hand as the reference.

When the rule is reversed

Left-hand threads

A left-hand, or reverse, thread tightens counterclockwise and loosens clockwise. It is selected when normal operating torque could gradually unscrew a conventional right-hand fastener.

Where you may find them

Reverse threads occur in selected rotating machinery and components such as a bicycle’s left pedal. DEWALT also specifies a left-hand-threaded retaining screw in some drill chucks; its removal direction is clockwise.

How to identify one

  • Look for an LH or L marking on the fastener or component.
  • Check the equipment manual or service documentation before applying force.
  • If the fastener becomes tighter while you are trying to loosen it, stop. Recheck the viewpoint and thread direction rather than forcing it.

A safe way to loosen or tighten a screw

  1. Choose the correct driver. Match the screwdriver tip to the head. If a Phillips tip does not seat firmly, compare adjacent sizes instead of turning with a loose fit.
  2. Seat the tip fully. Put the driver straight into the recess and keep the shaft aligned with the screw axis.
  3. Apply straight pressure. Press down while turning so the tip does not cam out and damage the head or your hand.
  4. Turn in the confirmed direction. Use counterclockwise for loosening a standard right-hand screw; use clockwise for tightening it. Reverse those directions only when a left-hand thread is confirmed or strongly indicated.
  5. Stop at abnormal resistance. Rising resistance in the expected loosening direction can signal a reverse thread, corrosion, damaged threads, or a driver that does not fit.

Never use a screwdriver as a pry bar, scraper, or chisel. A slip can puncture skin, damage the driver tip, or strip the screw head.

Starting a screw without damaging the threads

When installing a screw into an existing threaded hole, briefly turn it counterclockwise first until you feel the existing threads seat, then turn clockwise to tighten. This technique helps the screw start in the original thread path instead of cutting across it.

A quick decision check

  • Ordinary construction or household screw: assume clockwise tightens and counterclockwise loosens.
  • Rotating component, pedal, chuck, or other specialized machinery: check the manual or markings for a reverse thread.
  • Direction seems to make the screw tighter: stop, confirm you are viewing the head, verify the driver fit, and investigate a left-hand thread before adding force.
