For most Samsung The Frame owners, HDMI eARC is the best way to connect a soundbar or AV receiver. It provides reliable TV audio, supports the widest range of formats when both devices are compatible, and usually lets the TV remote control volume. Use optical for older equipment, Bluetooth for simple wireless listening, and Wi-Fi for compatible Samsung multi-speaker or Q-Symphony setups.
Before connecting anything, identify your exact Frame model, check whether it uses a One Connect Box, and determine whether your speakers are passive, powered, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or part of a soundbar system.

First, identify the type of speaker
- Soundbar: Usually connects through HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
- Samsung Music Frame or Music Studio speaker: May support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and selected Samsung multi-device features.
- Bluetooth speaker or headphones: Convenient and cable-free, but potentially affected by delay and compatibility limits.
- Powered bookshelf speakers: Can connect directly only if they have a compatible optical, Bluetooth, HDMI, or analog input.
- Passive speakers: Cannot connect directly to The Frame. They need an AV receiver or stereo amplifier.
- AV receiver: Connects through its HDMI output labeled ARC/eARC or through optical.
Choose the right connection
| Connection | Best for | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI eARC | Soundbars, receivers, Dolby Atmos | Highest capability and TV-remote control | Requires compatible ports; HDMI handshakes can fail |
| HDMI ARC | Older compatible soundbars and receivers | Simple one-cable connection | Less bandwidth than eARC |
| Optical | Older or straightforward systems | Dependable fallback | Limited to formats up to 5.1 channels |
| Wi-Fi | Compatible Samsung wireless systems | Clean installation and multi-device integration | Depends on network and exact model compatibility |
| Bluetooth | Casual wireless listening | No cable required | Possible latency, range, and control problems |
| Analog/AUX | Legacy powered speakers | Can work with older equipment | Often unavailable and less capable |
Samsung’s current guidance covers HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connection methods. See Samsung’s soundbar setup guide for model-specific instructions.

Before you start
- Find the exact TV model number and year. Port layouts and features vary between Frame generations.
- Check whether your TV uses a One Connect Box. On those models, the ARC/eARC and optical ports may be on the box rather than behind the display.
- Inspect the labels. Look for HDMI IN (eARC/ARC) on the TV or box and HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) on the soundbar or receiver.
- Have the correct cable available. For eARC, use a certified high-speed HDMI cable and follow the equipment manuals.
How to connect speakers with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Turn on the Frame and the soundbar or receiver.
- Connect the TV’s labeled HDMI IN (eARC/ARC) port to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) port. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the soundbar.
- Set the soundbar to its TV ARC/eARC source. Depending on the model, this may appear as TV ARC, TV eARC, or D.IN.
- On the TV, open Home → Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
- Select the listed HDMI soundbar, receiver, or equivalent external audio option.
- If necessary, open Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and enable HDMI-CEC. Labels vary by model and software version.
- Play content and test volume, mute, power synchronization, and source switching.
A successful setup normally sends sound through the external device and allows the Frame remote to change its volume. Samsung’s eARC guidance explains that support depends on the specific TV and soundbar models.

For Dolby Atmos
Use eARC when the TV and soundbar or receiver support it. Set the TV’s digital audio output to Auto or the appropriate passthrough setting, and set eARC to Auto or enabled where that option exists. Atmos also requires compatible source hardware, content, app settings, TV processing, and a soundbar or receiver that can decode Atmos. Samsung’s soundbar guidance specifically identifies eARC as the required connection for its relevant Atmos setup; see Samsung’s Atmos support page.
How to connect speakers with optical audio
- Remove the protective caps from both ends of the optical cable.
- Connect the TV’s Digital Audio Out (Optical) to the soundbar or receiver’s Digital Audio In (Optical).
- Select D.IN, Optical, or the equivalent source on the external device.
- Open Settings → Sound → Sound Output and choose Optical or the listed optical device.
- If there is no sound, try PCM under Digital Output Audio Format. Otherwise use Dolby Digital or Auto according to the receiving device.
Optical is a useful fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable, but Samsung says it cannot carry formats beyond 5.1 channels. It also provides fewer control features than HDMI-CEC. Avoid connecting HDMI and optical simultaneously while diagnosing a problem, since source selection can become confusing. See Samsung’s audio-format guidance.
How to connect a Bluetooth speaker or headphones
- Put the speaker or headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode. Being powered on is not always enough.
- Disconnect the device from a phone, tablet, or other nearby equipment.
- On the Frame, open Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
- Choose Bluetooth Speaker List or Bluetooth Audio Device.
- Select the device, confirm pairing, and test playback.
Bluetooth is best for casual listening where cable-free installation matters more than surround formats, low latency, or guaranteed remote-control behavior. Distance, interference, speaker codecs, and TV compatibility can affect performance. If voices do not match the picture, adjust the TV or speaker’s audio-sync control if available. A Bluetooth speaker is not automatically compatible with Q-Symphony.

- Connect the Frame and the compatible Samsung speaker or soundbar to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Add the audio device through the TV’s audio setup or the Samsung SmartThings/audio workflow supported by your model.
- Open Sound Output and select the Wi-Fi speaker or soundbar.
- For surround speakers, use Wi-Fi Speaker Surround Setup where available.
- For synchronized TV and external audio, use Q-Symphony Setup if the TV offers it.
- Test external-device-only sound before testing the combined configuration.
Wi-Fi setup is selective: the TV, speaker, software, region, and exact model numbers all matter. Samsung distinguishes Wi-Fi Speaker Surround Setup from Q-Symphony Setup; they are not interchangeable features.

Using and disabling Q-Symphony
Q-Symphony allows compatible Samsung TV speakers and external Samsung audio devices to play together. It can create a fuller sound field, but it is not supported by every Frame and every Samsung speaker, and simultaneous playback can sound echoey if synchronization or processing is not ideal.
- Connect and power on the TV and compatible external device.
- Confirm that the device appears under Sound Output.
- Open Q-Symphony Setup and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
- Select the output showing the TV together with the soundbar or speaker.
Samsung’s US compatibility information lists supported TV and soundbar families for specific years, including selected 2024 and 2025 Frame models. Match the exact model number rather than relying on the name “The Frame.” Samsung’s regional 2026 guidance describes expanded configurations, including up to five sound devices in specified qualifying combinations; that is a 2026-model-specific feature, not a universal Frame capability. Check Samsung’s Q-Symphony compatibility page.
To turn Q-Symphony off, return to Sound → Sound Output and choose TV Speaker or the external-device-only option displayed by your TV.
Troubleshooting common problems
No sound after HDMI connection
- Verify that the cable is in the Frame’s labeled ARC/eARC port, including the One Connect Box if applicable.
- Verify that the soundbar cable is in HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC).
- Select the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC or D.IN source.
- Re-select the device under Sound Output.
- Power off both devices, unplug them briefly, reconnect HDMI, and restart them.
- Try another suitable HDMI cable.
- Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices to identify a CEC conflict.
- Check TV and soundbar firmware.
Samsung notes that switching sources can take several seconds before sound appears. Its no-sound troubleshooting guide also recommends checking firm connections and the selected speaker output.

No sound over optical
- Remove both cable caps and push the connectors fully into place.
- Select Optical or D.IN on the soundbar.
- Select Optical on the TV.
- Try PCM if Auto produces silence.
Bluetooth device does not appear
- Re-enter pairing mode.
- Disconnect the speaker from other devices.
- Move it close to the TV.
- Delete its old TV pairing and pair again.
- Restart both devices and check whether another Bluetooth audio device is already connected.
Audio delay or lip-sync problems
Bluetooth latency, TV and soundbar processing, Q-Symphony synchronization, and source-format settings can all cause delay. Prefer HDMI eARC, adjust the TV or soundbar sync control, and temporarily disable Q-Symphony. Test a built-in TV streaming app and then an external HDMI source. If only one source has a problem, inspect that source’s audio-output settings.
Q-Symphony is missing
Confirm exact model compatibility, update both devices, use the same Wi-Fi network for wireless equipment, and select the external device before looking for Q-Symphony Setup. Try HDMI eARC instead of Bluetooth, remove and re-add wireless devices, and test external-only playback first.

One Connect Box and wall mounting
Locate all ports before routing cables. The One Connect system is designed to keep the wall-mounted display visually clean, but it also means the required audio connections may be several feet away from the screen. Plan the HDMI or optical route before mounting the TV.

Powered and passive bookshelf speakers
Powered speakers can connect directly only when they include an appropriate input. If they accept only analog input, you may need an optical-to-analog converter, followed by separate volume control. Passive speakers require an amplifier or AV receiver; The Frame cannot power them.
AV receivers and multiple speakers
Connect the TV ARC/eARC port to the receiver’s HDMI output labeled ARC/eARC, or use optical. If sources run through the receiver, verify video passthrough, HDR compatibility, HDMI-CEC behavior, and the receiver’s audio configuration. Two ordinary Bluetooth speakers cannot be assumed to support stereo pairing. Two Samsung wireless speakers, or a soundbar with rear speakers, require a compatible ecosystem and model-specific setup.
What to look for when buying an external audio system
- HDMI eARC: The strongest default for current home-theater systems.
- Optical input: A useful fallback for older TVs, soundbars, and powered speakers.
- HDMI-CEC: Helps the Frame remote control volume and power.
- Verified Q-Symphony support: Important if you want TV and Samsung audio devices to play together.
- Low-profile design: A slim soundbar or furniture-like wireless speaker better preserves The Frame’s appearance.
- Expansion options: Check whether a soundbar supports a subwoofer or wireless rear-speaker kit.
Samsung’s 2026 US announcement lists the HW-Q990H, HW-Q900H, HW-Q800H, and HW-QS90H soundbars, plus Music Studio 7 and Music Studio 5 speakers. Prices and availability can change. Previous-year models may be attractive when discounted, but their compatibility and device limits are not necessarily identical to 2026 products. A Samsung system is the most straightforward choice when Q-Symphony matters; an AV receiver and passive speakers offer more upgradeability but are harder to conceal; a Bluetooth-only speaker is a poor choice when gaming latency, Atmos, or TV-remote control is important.
