Unlock Your Smart Home: A Guide to Home Assistant Zigbee Integration

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant can connect many Zigbee lights, plugs, sensors, switches, remotes, locks, and thermostats locally—but you need a compatible Zigbee coordinator first. For most beginners, Home Assistant’s built-in Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) integration is the simplest place to start. Zigbee2MQTT is a capable alternative when you need a separate Zigbee service or stronger support for a particular device.

This guide explains the hardware, setup steps, mesh-network planning, troubleshooting, and migration decisions behind a reliable Home Assistant Zigbee installation.

What Zigbee is—and what it is not

Zigbee is a low-power wireless protocol used by smart-home devices. Unlike Wi-Fi, which normally connects each device directly to a wireless router, Zigbee devices can form a mesh network in which powered devices relay messages for one another.

Zigbee is different from Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter:

#1 Best Overall
Sonoff Zigbee USB Dongle Plus-ZBDongle-E 3.0 External Antenna Interface SMA Gateway Universal, Pre-Installed with Zigbee Firmware Based on EZNet 6.10.3 Coordinated Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT
  • Pre-flashed with Zigbee coordinator firmware based on EZNet 6.10.3 out of box
  • Support smart home platforms like Home Assistant, openHAB, Zigbee2MQTT and so on
  • Based on EFR32MG21
  • +20dBm output gain
  • Aluminum housing effectively reduces signal interference from peripherals
  • Zigbee is a wireless protocol with its own mesh network and coordinator.
  • Thread is another low-power mesh networking technology, commonly used as a transport for Matter devices.
  • Matter is an application-layer smart-home standard; it can run over Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use different networking models and do not make a Zigbee coordinator unnecessary.

Your Zigbee network has three important roles:

  • Coordinator: the central radio that creates and manages one Zigbee network. Home Assistant communicates with it.
  • Router: usually a mains-powered Zigbee device such as a plug, in-wall switch, or powered bulb. Routers relay traffic and extend coverage.
  • End device: usually a battery-powered sensor or remote. It sleeps to conserve power and generally does not extend the mesh.

A coordinator is not a repeater, and adding one coordinator does not automatically provide whole-home coverage. Reliable performance comes from the combination of coordinator placement, compatible devices, powered routers, and sensible radio planning.

What you need before starting

  • A running Home Assistant installation.
  • One compatible Zigbee coordinator.
  • Zigbee devices that are unpaired or factory-reset.
  • A suitable USB or network connection for the coordinator.
  • A sensible location for the coordinator, preferably central, elevated, and away from interference.
  • One or more mains-powered Zigbee routers for larger homes or larger networks.
  • A backup plan before changing coordinators or rebuilding an established network.

One coordinator can manage one Zigbee network. Do not try to use the same coordinator simultaneously with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. If another application already controls the adapter, stop that application and free the coordinator before configuring ZHA.

ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT?

Both are valid ways to connect Zigbee to Home Assistant. The right choice depends less on brand reputation than on your exact device models, required features, and preferred architecture.

Criterion ZHA Zigbee2MQTT
Installation Built into Home Assistant Separate application, add-on, container, or service
MQTT required No Yes, for the normal Home Assistant integration
Configuration Primarily through the Home Assistant interface Through the Zigbee2MQTT frontend and configuration
Device support Standard Zigbee support plus ZHA device handlers and quirks Device converters and a large device database
Independence Tightly integrated with Home Assistant Can run independently from Home Assistant
Best fit Simple, Home Assistant-native installations Advanced controls, specific device support, or separated architecture

Start with ZHA if you want the fewest moving parts, do not want to maintain MQTT, and your chosen devices are known to work well with it. Choose Zigbee2MQTT if the exact device has materially better support there, you already run MQTT, want more device-specific controls, or want Zigbee to remain a separate service.

Zigbee2MQTT’s Home Assistant integration uses MQTT discovery. Its documented configuration includes:

homeassistant:
  enabled: true

The Home Assistant MQTT integration must also be active. Zigbee2MQTT can be installed in several ways; see its official installation guide.

Do not assume either system supports every Zigbee product equally. Check the exact model number, firmware, and features in the ZHA documentation and the Zigbee2MQTT device database. “Works with Zigbee” does not guarantee that every manufacturer-specific feature will appear in Home Assistant.

Choosing a coordinator

USB or network coordinator?

A USB coordinator is usually inexpensive and straightforward, but it must be placed near the Home Assistant host. A network coordinator can sit in a more central location or farther from noisy computers and power supplies. It also introduces network infrastructure, configuration, and another possible point of failure.

A direct USB connection is often preferable to a Wi-Fi-connected serial adapter. Packet loss and latency are more damaging to a serial radio protocol than they are to ordinary web traffic. If you choose a network coordinator, use a stable wired network where possible.

Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2

As checked on August 18, 2026, Home Assistant’s current first-party coordinator is Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2. Its recommended MSRP is $49 in the United States and €45, although regional taxes, shipping, stock, and retailer pricing vary.

  • Enhanced Antenna Gain. Default 3dBi antenna gain, optimized up to 4.5dBi for stronger signal strength and wider coverage, ensures a reliable device connection.
  • Wide platform compatibility. Zigbee Dongle works with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, openHAB and supports Zigbee 3.0 devices such as Philips Hue, Aqara, IKEA Tradfri and SONOFF.
  • Flexible firmware flashing. Firmware can be easily flashed via the SONOFF dongle flasher or Add-on to switch between Zigbee coordinator, router or Thread RCP mode.
  • Compact design with USB extension cable. Smaller enclosure with USB extension cable allows flexible placement and reduces electromagnetic interference for stable communication.

ZBT-2 uses a Silicon Labs MG24 radio, a separate antenna and base, USB-C, and a listed USB baud rate of 460800. It supports Zigbee 3.0 and Thread and can be used with both ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT. It is an adapter—not a Zigbee router or repeater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot run Zigbee and Thread simultaneously. Home Assistant recommends dedicating it to one protocol rather than relying on multiprotocol operation.

The discontinued Connect ZBT-1, formerly called SkyConnect, remains supported in software. Existing owners do not need to replace a functioning adapter solely because ZBT-2 is now the current model. New buyers should compare remaining ZBT-1 stock carefully with ZBT-2.

Other coordinator families supported by ZHA include Silicon Labs EmberZNet/EZSP, Texas Instruments Z-Stack/ZNP, and ConBee/RaspBee adapters using deCONZ. Examples documented by Home Assistant include ZBT-1, Home Assistant Yellow, SONOFF ZBDongle-E, SMLIGHT SLZB-07, CC26xx/CC13xx adapters, and ConBee III.

Set up ZHA step by step

1. Prepare the coordinator

Connect the coordinator to the Home Assistant host. For a USB adapter, use a USB extension cable rather than plugging the radio directly beside the computer. Prefer a USB 2.0 connection or powered USB 2.0 hub when practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the coordinator away from USB 3.x equipment, Wi-Fi access points, power supplies, dense wiring, and metal enclosures. Restart Home Assistant if the adapter is not immediately detected.

2. Add the integration

  1. Open Settings → Devices & services.
  2. Select Add Integration.
  3. Choose Zigbee Home Automation.
  4. Select the detected serial device path.
  5. Select Submit.
  6. Allow ZHA to detect the radio type automatically.

If automatic detection fails, choose the correct type manually. The documented options include EZSP for Silicon Labs EmberZNet, deCONZ for ConBee/RaspBee, ZNP for Texas Instruments Z-Stack, ZiGate, and XBee.

3. Create the network

Confirm the Zigbee network settings and complete the setup. ZHA creates and manages one Zigbee network through the selected coordinator. Do not select an adapter already controlled by Zigbee2MQTT or deCONZ.

4. Join a device

  1. Factory-reset the device using the manufacturer’s instructions. Reset procedures vary by model.
  2. Place it close to the coordinator for initial pairing.
  3. Put the device into pairing or join mode.
  4. Start ZHA’s device-joining process.
  5. Wait for the device to appear.

A device previously joined to another hub generally must be reset before it can join ZHA. Battery devices may need to be woken repeatedly during the join window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the first device

Before adding dozens of devices, test one easy-to-reset device—ideally a mains-powered plug, bulb, or a well-supported motion or contact sensor.

  • Trigger the device and confirm state changes are reported.
  • Send a command and confirm the device responds.
  • Assign it to the correct area and rename entities clearly.
  • Create a simple automation and test it locally.

Pairing is not the same as complete feature support. A non-standard manufacturer implementation may expose only some entities, or ZHA may need a device-specific quirk. A link-quality or battery value is useful diagnostic information, but it is not a guarantee of reliable operation; observe real command success and availability.

Build a reliable Zigbee mesh

Begin with the coordinator in a central, elevated, open position. For USB adapters, an extension cable is one of the highest-value improvements because it moves the antenna away from noisy electronics. Home Assistant specifically recommends separating the coordinator from USB 3.x equipment and nearby Wi-Fi sources.

Add powered routers as the network expands:

  • Zigbee smart plugs.
  • Permanently powered in-wall switches.
  • Dedicated Zigbee repeaters.
  • Powered bulbs, provided they remain powered at the wall.

Battery sensors normally sleep and should not be treated as repeaters. Also avoid routinely switching off Zigbee bulbs or plugs that are carrying traffic for other devices. Cutting their power can destabilize routes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pair important devices in their intended locations when practical. After adding or moving routers, allow time for routing information to settle. Large homes may need several powered routers or a centrally located network coordinator. There is no single universal Zigbee device-count limit: practical capacity depends on coordinator hardware and firmware, router count, direct-child limits, device behavior, and radio conditions.

Plan around radio interference

Zigbee uses the 2.4 GHz band, as do many Wi-Fi networks. Nearby Wi-Fi access points, neighboring networks, and USB 3.x equipment can contribute to pairing failures, delays, and dropouts.

Consider Zigbee channel selection alongside your Wi-Fi channel plan. Do not casually change the Zigbee channel on a large, stable installation: devices may need to reconnect, and some may require additional recovery work. If the network is new, plan the channels before pairing many devices. If it is established, first try improving coordinator placement and reducing interference.

Building materials, metal, antenna orientation, device placement, and neighboring networks all affect performance. Software settings cannot compensate for every physical radio problem.

Create a simple first automation

Once a sensor and light or plug are working, create a small local automation from the Home Assistant interface—for example, a motion sensor turning on a light, a contact sensor sending a notification, or a button toggling a lamp.

Keep the first test deliberately simple. It confirms that the device reports events, Home Assistant receives them, and the controlled device responds. For locks, heating equipment, and other safety-sensitive hardware, test locally and keep a manual fallback before relying on automation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The coordinator is not detected

  • Confirm the adapter is physically connected.
  • Check that Home Assistant exposes the correct serial device.
  • Restart Home Assistant.
  • Avoid unstable or unpowered USB hubs.
  • Use a powered USB 2.0 hub if only USB 3.x ports are available.
  • Confirm another application is not using the coordinator.
  • If needed, manually select the correct radio type.

The device will not pair

  • Factory-reset it according to the exact manufacturer instructions.
  • Move it close to the coordinator for pairing.
  • Replace or recharge its batteries.
  • Wake a sleeping battery device during the join window.
  • Make sure it is not still joined to another hub.
  • Reduce nearby USB 3.x or Wi-Fi interference.
  • Check the exact model’s compatibility and try again.

The device pairs but features are missing

Re-pair the device, review diagnostics and logs, and check for a ZHA device-specific quirk or support information. Missing entities do not necessarily indicate a defective radio network. If the device is known to expose more features through Zigbee2MQTT, that may justify choosing Zigbee2MQTT instead.

Devices become unavailable after adding hardware

  • Check whether a bulb or plug acting as a router is being switched off.
  • Review coordinator placement and antenna orientation.
  • Inspect for USB 3.x, Wi-Fi, or metal-obstruction problems.
  • Restart or power-cycle mains-powered routers.
  • Allow the mesh time to rebuild.
  • Check battery condition and wake behavior.

Back up and migrate your network

ZHA automatically backs up the Zigbee network, and manual backups can be created from network settings. Its documented migration flow supports moves between supported Silicon Labs, Texas Instruments, and ConBee/RaspBee adapter types when the original backup was created by ZHA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this path:

  1. Go to Settings → Zigbee.
  2. Select Migrate.
  3. Plug in the new adapter, preferably using a USB extension cable and USB 2.0 connection where applicable.
  4. Select Submit.
  5. Choose Migrate to a new adapter.
  6. Select the new serial port.
  7. Choose automatic migration or advanced migration from an older backup.
  8. If prompted, enable Permanently replace the radio IEEE address.
  9. Wait for devices to rejoin.
  10. Power-cycle devices that remain unavailable.

Devices may be temporarily unavailable during migration. Do not operate old and new coordinators together with the same IEEE address unless the old adapter has been reset or its address changed.

Zigbee2MQTT stores network information in the coordinator and in files under its data directory. Migration may require copying that directory, updating the serial port, preserving the old IEEE address, or re-pairing devices, depending on the adapter change. Follow the Zigbee2MQTT migration guidance for the exact combination.

Switching from ZHA to Zigbee2MQTT—or the reverse—is a separate migration project. A backup made by one implementation is not automatically a transferable network backup for the other. Plan for re-pairing unless the current documentation for your exact adapters confirms otherwise.

Useful advanced features

  • Groups and scenes: control several compatible lights or devices together.
  • Device binding: allow compatible devices to communicate directly, potentially reducing dependence on Home Assistant for some controls. In ZHA, the path is Settings → Zigbee → Devices → Manage Zigbee device → Bindings. Not every device supports binding, and some support only groups or individual devices.
  • OTA updates: apply firmware updates where the device and implementation support them.
  • Diagnostics: use logs, availability, battery state, and real-world behavior together when investigating faults.
  • Quirks and converters: these can expose behavior that a generic Zigbee profile does not describe completely.

ZHA documents limitations including incomplete UI support for QR-code secure provisioning, lack of support for devices using only Zigbee Green Power or Zigbee Smart Energy profiles, and no complete official out-of-the-box compatibility list. Its zha.permit action supports commissioning; QR-based workflows require the qr_code parameter and are not the normal beginner pairing method.

When Zigbee2MQTT is the better choice

Zigbee2MQTT is worth considering when your exact device is better supported there, you need device-specific converters or controls, you already operate an MQTT broker, or you want Zigbee to run independently from the Home Assistant host.

The trade-off is additional administration: an MQTT broker, a separate service, more configuration, and another layer to troubleshoot. You can run ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT on separate coordinators, but that creates two independent Zigbee networks. It is not a way to share one network or one coordinator.

Practical buying guidance

For a new, straightforward installation, Home Assistant Green paired with Connect ZBT-2 is a simple dedicated setup. If you already have an always-on server, mini-PC, Raspberry Pi, or virtual machine running Home Assistant, you may need only the coordinator.

For mesh expansion, buy compatible mains-powered plugs, repeaters, or switches rather than relying on battery sensors. Verify the exact model, regional electrical certification, firmware behavior, and return policy before buying several units. Avoid purchasing proprietary hubs unless a required feature is unavailable through a local Zigbee implementation.
