When its fruit ripens, the squirting cucumber ejects liquid and seeds several meters from the plant. It is Ecballium elaterium, a member of the cucumber family—but it is toxic and inedible, not a novelty snack.

What is the squirting cucumber?

Ecballium elaterium (L.) A.Rich. is a trailing vine or bush in the Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes familiar food crops. Kew lists “squirting cucumber” as its common name and “exploding cucumber” as another English name. The genus name comes from the Greek ekballo, meaning “to expel, throw or cast out.” (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; Kew Plants of the World Online)

How to recognize it

Kew describes dark-green, loosely triangular or heart-shaped leaves with uneven edges. Silvery hairs may cover the leaves, stems and fruits. The small yellow flowers are around 2 cm across; pollinated flowers develop into blue-green, oval fruits around 5 cm long. Individual plants can vary in form. (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew)

How does the squirting cucumber launch its seeds?

As the fruit ripens, liquid pressure builds inside it. The fruit releases at a weak point near the stalk—by detaching or rupturing there—and ejects fluid and seeds outward. A 2025 peer-reviewed study characterizes the release as turgor-driven and reports that seeds and fluid can travel several meters. The precise distance varies; the sources cited here support “several meters,” not a universal maximum. (University of Oxford, Plants 400; npj Science of Plants, 6 August 2025)

Is the squirting cucumber edible or safe to handle?

No. Despite its name and family connection to edible cucumbers, Ecballium elaterium is toxic and inedible. Kew warns that its toxic chemicals can cause serious bodily harm and does not recommend the plant as a treatment. Do not eat it or handle a ripe fruit to trigger its release. (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew)

Historical European folk uses included laxative use, treatment for swelling and use as an abortifacient. Those records are historical context, not evidence of safety or medical guidance.

Where does it grow?

Kew Plants of the World Online places the native range from the Canary Islands across the Mediterranean region to southern European Russia and northern Iran. Kew also records introduced areas elsewhere, including Great Britain, New Zealand’s North Island, parts of Australia, and locations in North America and Central Asia. These records do not mean the plant is invasive everywhere it occurs. (Kew Plants of the World Online; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew)

In Victoria, Australia, VicFlora describes the species as introduced and naturalised, occurring in weedy places such as railway reserves and roadsides, usually in drier regions. Kew notes that the plant has been classified as invasive in many countries because it can spread rapidly; check local rules rather than assuming its status is the same everywhere. Can you grow it in a garden?

Cambridge University Botanic Garden recommends a hot, dry position. Its garden treats the plant as a perennial, while in cooler locations it may be grown as a half-hardy annual. That difference reflects climate, not a universal planting calendar. (Cambridge University Botanic Garden)

Because ripe fruits disperse seeds forcefully and the plant can spread quickly, growing it calls for caution. Check local restrictions and take steps to prevent uncontrolled seed spread; do not rely on a single season’s growth pattern to predict when it will flower or fruit.
