What is the latest construction schedule?
The University of Michigan Board of Regents’ March 2026 active construction report, with status as of February 20, 2026, records a December 2023 construction start and a current estimated completion date of September 2027. The report lists June 2027 as the original completion estimate, so the current estimate is three months later. The university’s FY2025 annual report also gives September 2027 as the estimated completion date.

UMCI’s official site describes fall 2027 as the expected opening window. Completion and opening are different milestones: the sources do not give a fixed public opening day. What is planned for the building?
The Regents’ project description presents UMCI as a six-story facility at 2121 Cass Ave. Its planned uses combine university and public-facing activities:
- Public programs and a cafe.
- Shared office space for the U-M Detroit Center and other university units.
- Multidisciplinary graduate research.
- Workforce development and community engagement.
- Flexible shelled space intended to allow future expansion.
Examples cited by the university include K–12 programming such as the Michigan Engineering Zone and the Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project. These are examples of intended programming, not evidence that all listed activities are already operating at the construction site. The university describes innovation, education, entrepreneurship, talent development and economic growth as goals; the sources do not establish measured economic or community outcomes from a building that has not yet opened. What new degree is planned at UMCI?
UMCI and the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning announced a one-year Master of Urban Technology on September 29, 2026. The first cohort is planned for fall 2027, and the program is based at UMCI. The announced curriculum connects technology and AI with urban planning, real estate, architecture, construction, design and entrepreneurship, with applied work intended to involve industry and community partners.

Where is UMCI, and can the public visit now?
The university lists 2121 Cass Ave., Detroit, MI 48201 as the center’s permanent address for 2027. It lists Chroma Detroit, 2937 E. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202 as a temporary location. The permanent address is a construction project, not an open public facility during construction. Check UMCI’s current event and contact details before traveling to either location.
