Keep painted, treated, glued, contaminated, wet, or deteriorated wood out of a residential fireplace. These materials can release harmful substances, create excessive smoke, or contribute to creosote buildup. Burn only clean, dry, seasoned firewood; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says moisture below 20 percent is best.

Wood and other materials to keep out of your fireplace

EPA guidance for residential wood burning identifies several materials that are unsafe or unsuitable. When you cannot tell whether a piece is treated, coated, or contaminated, do not use it as firewood.

Painted, coated, or pressure-treated wood

Do not burn painted or coated lumber, or wood treated with preservatives. Smoke and ash from these materials can contain harmful chemicals. EPA specifically warns against burning creosote-treated and other preservative-treated wood in residential settings because people can inhale toxic chemicals; its warning includes chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood. See EPA’s best wood-burning practices, its creosote guidance, and its CCA guidance.

Plywood, particle board, and glued wood products

Keep plywood, particle board, and other manufactured wood products that contain glue out of a fireplace. A clean appearance does not make construction scraps equivalent to untreated firewood. EPA includes these materials on its do-not-burn list.

Ocean driftwood

Do not burn ocean driftwood in a residential fireplace. EPA lists it among materials to avoid; choose ordinary clean firewood instead. EPA’s guidance does not recommend treating beach-collected wood as fireplace fuel.

Wet, green, or unseasoned wood

EPA’s advice is direct: “Do not burn wet or green (unseasoned) wood.” It produces more smoke, and that smoke can leave more creosote in the chimney. EPA best practices and its wood-burning appliance FAQ explain the risks.

Rotted, diseased, or moldy wood

Do not use wood that is rotted, diseased, or moldy. EPA lists these conditions as unsuitable for burning in a wood-burning appliance. Check EPA’s material guidance.

Household trash and printed or synthetic materials

A fireplace is not a waste incinerator. Do not burn household trash, including cardboard, plastic, foam, or colored printed materials such as magazines, boxes, and wrappers. EPA warns that burning these materials can release harmful pollutants. See EPA’s full do-not-burn guidance.

RDINSCOS Replaceable Pins Moisture Meter
  • FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
  • CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
  • PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
  • ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.

How to check whether firewood is dry enough

Use clean, seasoned firewood with moisture content below 20 percent, the EPA’s stated best target. A firewood moisture meter is a practical way to check rather than relying on appearance alone. EPA’s moisture and safety guidance recommends checking wood with a meter.

Moisture matters because a fire must spend energy evaporating water in wet wood. That leaves more smoke, and as smoke cools in the chimney it can deposit creosote. Creosote is combustible residue; if enough accumulates on chimney walls, it can lead to a chimney fire. EPA explains this in its creosote FAQ.

What to do with questionable or treated wood

  • Do not test-burn it. If you cannot establish that scrap wood is clean, untreated, and free of coatings or glue, leave it out of the fireplace.
  • Follow local disposal directions. Rules for treated wood disposal vary; consult local waste guidance. EPA’s creosote information includes disposal guidance for treated wood.
  • Use fireplace-ready fuel. Choose dry, seasoned, clean firewood and follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

Reduce smoke and protect the chimney

For wood that is appropriate to burn, EPA recommends a hot fire with good airflow rather than allowing it to smolder. Keep the appliance door closed except when loading or stoking a live fire, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Observe local air-quality advisories and burn restrictions.

Arrange an annual inspection and service by a certified professional, and have the chimney cleaned annually by a certified chimney sweep, as EPA recommends. Smoke inside the home is a sign that something may be wrong; stop treating it as normal and arrange an inspection. EPA’s service and safety guidance covers these steps.

Handle fireplace ashes safely

Put ashes in a covered metal container and store it outdoors on a nonflammable surface. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Do not assume ashes are cold because the fire appears to be out; follow your local disposal instructions.

How current is this guidance?

This is U.S.-focused advice based on EPA pages accessed October 7, 2026. EPA says its Burn Wise program ran from 2009 to 2025 and that the website is now a historic record, with content no longer updated after October 30, 2025. EPA’s pesticide pages also provide guidance on creosote- and CCA-treated wood. Local disposal requirements and burn restrictions can differ, so check local authorities as well as your appliance instructions.
