Short answer: Tuya v2 was a genuine Tuya-maintained Home Assistant project, but the old custom repository is not the installation route new users should follow. Tuya’s Smart Life integration entered Home Assistant Core in version 2024.2. Today, install the built-in Tuya integration from Home Assistant and authorize it through the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app.
Tuya v2 was official—but it is now legacy
The phrase “Tuya v2 integrated with Home Assistant officially” combines several stages of Tuya’s Home Assistant support.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Tuya v2: an older integration maintained through Tuya’s GitHub repository, using a Tuya IoT cloud project and linked app devices.
- Smart Life integration: a related project that was officially integrated into Home Assistant Core for 2024.2.
- Current Tuya integration: the built-in Home Assistant integration installed through the normal Integrations screen.
Tuya’s original Tuya Home Assistant repository now states that the hosted v2 integration is no longer maintained by Tuya’s Developer Team and directs ongoing work toward Home Assistant Core. Therefore, it is accurate to say that Tuya’s Home Assistant work became part of the official Home Assistant ecosystem—but misleading to suggest that the old “Tuya v2” custom component is the current product.

Search for Tuya, not “Tuya v2.” Do not begin by downloading the old tuya-home-assistant repository, copying a custom_components/tuya folder, or creating a Tuya IoT Developer Platform project. Those steps belong mainly to the legacy v2 workflow or to specific third-party integrations.
Home Assistant may discover Tuya automatically. If it does not, add it manually from the integration list. The current setup is documented on the Home Assistant Tuya integration page.
Current setup procedure
Before you begin
You need:
- Home Assistant.
- The Tuya Smart or Smart Life mobile app.
- An account in one of those apps.
- At least one Tuya device already added and working in the app.
- A second screen—usually a phone or tablet—to display and scan the authorization QR code.
Use the same app account, home or location, and region that contains the devices you want to import.
Connect the integration
- Open the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app and confirm that the device works there.
- In Home Assistant, open Settings.
- Select Devices & services.
- Choose Add Integration.
- Search for Tuya and start the setup.
- When prompted, provide the requested account information or User Code.
- Leave the QR code displayed in Home Assistant on a separate screen.
- In the mobile app, tap Add Device or the + button, then open the app’s QR-code scanner.
- Scan the QR code shown by Home Assistant and complete authorization.
- Return to Home Assistant and confirm that the devices and entities have been added.
To find the app’s User Code, open Me → gear icon → Account and Security → User Code. The exact labels can vary slightly between Tuya Smart and Smart Life versions.

Adding devices later
First add every new device to Tuya Smart or Smart Life and verify that it is online. Then reload the Tuya integration in Home Assistant. Home Assistant specifically documents reloading the integration when newly added devices do not appear.
- Check that the device works in the mobile app.
- Confirm it uses the same account and home or location authorized in Home Assistant.
- Reload the Tuya integration.
- Restart Home Assistant only if reloading does not update the device list.
- Check whether the device category is supported.
What the official integration supports—and what it does not
The official Tuya integration is cloud-based. It uses Tuya’s official Python SDK and communicates through Tuya services rather than controlling the device directly over your local network.
It supports many common categories, including switches, lights, fans, and thermo-hygrometers. However, “Powered by Tuya” does not guarantee complete Home Assistant support. Compatibility depends on the product category, the data points exposed by that particular device, and what Home Assistant maps into entities.

As a result, a device may appear successfully while offering only some of its controls. Advanced modes, app scenes, individual data points, or brand-specific functions may be absent. Missing controls usually indicate a support or mapping limitation—not a failed login.
Do you need the Tuya IoT Developer Platform?
Not as the normal starting point for the current built-in QR-code setup. Home Assistant’s current instructions center on the Tuya Smart or Smart Life account and app.
Older Tuya v2 instructions required a separate Tuya IoT Developer Platform account, a cloud project, and a link between that project and the devices in the mobile app. Those instructions remain relevant mainly when maintaining a legacy setup or configuring a particular community integration. They are not the standard path for a new installation of Home Assistant’s built-in Tuya integration.
Migrating from the old Tuya v2 component
There is no safe assumption that a custom Tuya v2 installation will convert automatically. The devices may be rediscovered, but entity IDs, dashboard cards, scenes, and automation references can change. The former Smart Life project also stated that it did not provide automatic device migration.

Use this cautious migration checklist:
- Back up Home Assistant.
- Record important entity IDs and review automations, scripts, scenes, and dashboards that reference them.
- Disable or remove the old custom Tuya component according to its installation method.
- Restart Home Assistant if necessary to clear the custom component.
- Add the built-in integration through Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration → Tuya.
- Complete the QR-code authorization flow.
- Check every device and entity.
- Repair automations or dashboard references if entity IDs changed.
Official Tuya versus local alternatives
| Option | Cloud required | Setup | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Tuya | Yes | Simplest; app-account authorization and QR code | Supported devices and users who want the standard Home Assistant path |
| Tuya Local | Designed to avoid Tuya cloud operation | Varies by device; depends on device definitions and local details | Users prioritizing local control and reduced cloud dependence |
| LocalTuya | Intended for local control | More technical; may require device identifiers, IP information, local keys, and data-point mappings | Experienced users who need manual local configuration |
Tuya Local and LocalTuya are community projects, not official replacements maintained as part of the built-in Tuya integration. Local control can reduce cloud dependence and latency, but device support and configuration are more variable. If local operation is essential when buying new hardware, a native Matter or Zigbee device may be a better architectural choice—provided that the specific product supports that protocol and Home Assistant integration.
Troubleshooting
The integration does not appear
- Search for Tuya, not “Tuya v2.”
- Remove or disable a stale custom Tuya component.
- Restart Home Assistant.
- Search again under Settings → Devices & services.
- Confirm that Home Assistant is current and meets the requirements in the current documentation.
Tuya’s stable setup documentation specifies Home Assistant Core 2024.2.0 or later for that documented workflow, but the minimum version can change as Home Assistant evolves.
The QR code will not scan
- Display the code on a separate screen.
- Use the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app that owns the devices.
- Open the app’s add-device or QR scanner rather than an unrelated camera function.
- Confirm that the app account matches the account being authorized.
- Generate a fresh QR code if the displayed one has expired or been replaced.
Devices are missing
Verify that the device is online in the mobile app, belongs to the correct account and home, and is not attached to a different regional app account. Reload the Tuya integration, then inspect Home Assistant logs for authentication or API errors. Finally, check whether the category is supported.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe device appears but controls are missing
Check the device category and the entities Home Assistant created. The official integration does not expose every Smart Life function, and lock and remote platforms are documented exceptions. A device can therefore be connected successfully while exposing only basic controls.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Install Tuya from Home Assistant’s Integrations screen—not the old Tuya v2 custom repository. The current integration is official in the Home Assistant Core sense, uses a cloud-based QR-code authorization flow, and may expose fewer features than the Tuya app. Choose Tuya Local or LocalTuya only when local control is worth the additional device-specific configuration.
