Tuya Home Assistant Integration: Connect Tuya Smart and Smart Life Devices

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—Home Assistant can connect to many devices configured through the Tuya Smart or Smart Life apps. On Home Assistant OS, formerly called Hass.io, the official Tuya integration is installed from Settings → Devices & services; it is not normally a separate add-on or HACS package.

The important limitation is that the official integration is cloud-based. It can be easy to set up, but it may have latency, requires Tuya cloud connectivity, and may not expose every control available in the mobile app.

Does Tuya work with Home Assistant?

The official Tuya integration supports many devices added to Tuya Smart and Smart Life. This includes products sold under the Tuya name, rebranded products, and devices marketed as Powered by Tuya.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is not completely uniform. Tuya is an ecosystem used by many manufacturers, rather than one standardized hardware range. Two smart plugs, lights, thermostats, or vacuums may expose different functions because of their product definitions, firmware, regional services, or manufacturer-specific data points.

  • Support wired and wireless WiFi networking and WiFi supports both 2.4G and 5G,It supports the communication protocols of Cable+WiFi+Zigbee+Bluetooth+Thread, that is, the uplink Ethernet and wireless WiFi connect to the cloud, and the downlink supports Zigbee (compatible with Tuya’s original Zigbee device ecosystem), Bluetooth (compatible with Tuya’s original Bluetooth device ecosystem) and Thread (Matter over thread) sub-devices.
  • Local scenario/automation:when the scenario /automation execution is preferentially local.Through this function, the intelligent scenario/automation set by the user can beexecuted efficiently when the network is broken.

The most useful initial test is whether the device can be added to Tuya Smart or Smart Life and controlled there. That confirms that the device belongs to a supported app ecosystem, but it does not guarantee that every mobile-app feature will appear in Home Assistant.

What you need before setup

  • A working Home Assistant installation, including Home Assistant OS if that is your preferred installation type.
  • The Tuya Smart or Smart Life mobile app.
  • A Tuya or Smart Life account.
  • At least one device already paired with that account.
  • A second screen, such as a phone, tablet, or another computer, for displaying Home Assistant’s QR code.
  • Access to your Home Assistant instance through its browser interface.

First confirm that the device works in the mobile app and is assigned to the correct home or location. Home Assistant must authenticate against the same app account that contains the device.

How to install the official Tuya integration

1. Find your Tuya User Code

In the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app, use the current documented path:

2. Add Tuya in Home Assistant

  1. Open Home Assistant.
  2. Go to Settings → Devices & services.
  3. Select Add Integration.
  4. Search for Tuya.
  5. Follow the displayed instructions.

Home Assistant may discover Tuya automatically. If Tuya appears under discovered integrations, select it there instead of adding it manually.

3. Authorize Home Assistant with the QR code

During setup, Home Assistant displays a QR code. On your phone:

  1. Open Tuya Smart or Smart Life.
  2. Tap + or Add Device.
  3. Choose Scan, or open the app’s QR-code scanner.
  4. Scan the QR code shown by Home Assistant.
  5. Complete the authorization prompts.

Do you need a Tuya IoT Developer account?

For the current built-in Home Assistant setup, ordinary users generally follow the QR-code and app-account flow above. The current Home Assistant documentation does not make creating a Tuya IoT cloud project part of the normal consumer setup.

Older tutorials can be confusing because earlier or developer-oriented workflows instructed users to create a Tuya IoT Platform account, create a cloud project, select a data center, authorize APIs, and link the mobile-app account. Tuya’s legacy documentation still describes that process at GitHub.

Do not create a developer project merely because an old video shows one. Follow the screens in your current Home Assistant version. Developer-platform instructions may still be relevant to developers, installers, commercial integrators, or specific legacy tools, but they are not automatically the correct setup for the built-in integration.

Adding devices after the initial setup

Pair new devices in Tuya Smart or Smart Life first. They may not appear in Home Assistant immediately. Reload the integration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings → Devices & services.
  2. Find Tuya.
  3. Open its three-dot menu.
  4. Select Reload.

If reloading does not refresh the device list, restart Home Assistant and check the integration again.

Which Tuya devices and entities are supported?

Home Assistant lists support for many platform types, including:

  • Binary sensors and cameras
  • Climate devices and humidifiers
  • Covers, fans, lights, switches, and valves
  • Doorbells, events, numbers, selects, sirens, and scenes
  • Vacuums

The official integration does not support every Home Assistant platform; the documentation specifically excludes the lock and remote platforms. Even within a supported category, the exact entities depend on the device’s firmware and the controls exposed by Tuya’s product definition.

A device appearing in Home Assistant means only that some usable data or control has been exposed. It does not mean that every mode, schedule, energy statistic, alarm, preset, or diagnostic value from the mobile app will be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are controls or sensors missing?

Home Assistant says that incomplete functionality is often caused by limitations in Tuya’s official Python SDK. It is therefore possible for a device to pair successfully while exposing only a switch, a basic light control, or a limited set of sensors.

For a device with missing controls, download diagnostics:

  1. Open Settings → Devices & services.
  2. Open the Tuya integration.
  3. Select the affected device.
  4. Open the three-dot menu.
  5. Select Download diagnostics.
  6. Examine the status, status_range, and function keys.

If all three are empty, the Home Assistant documentation says that only Tuya scenes, if any, may be available. Review diagnostic files before sharing them publicly; they may contain device, account, network, or location information.

Tuya scenes in Home Assistant

Scenes created in the Tuya app can appear in Home Assistant after the integration updates. A Tuya scene is not necessarily the same as a native Home Assistant automation: it remains a Tuya-defined action and may depend on Tuya’s cloud service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scenes can be useful when the individual device controls are incomplete. For example, a complex appliance mode may be available as a Tuya scene even when Home Assistant cannot expose every underlying setting. Test important scenes during a controlled internet outage before relying on them for time-sensitive or safety-sensitive automations.

Official Tuya integration versus Tuya Local

Consideration Official Tuya Tuya Local
Setup Simple, built into Home Assistant More technical and device-specific
Normal control path Tuya cloud Local network communication
Internet outage Home Assistant control may fail May continue working on the LAN
Compatibility Broad, but limited by the official SDK Varies by model, firmware, keys, and data points
Maintenance Official Home Assistant integration Separate third-party project
Privacy Uses Tuya’s cloud services Reduces normal cloud control, but does not necessarily stop all vendor communication

Tuya Local is a separate custom integration. It may offer lower latency, more local operation, or additional controls, but it can require local keys, device-specific configuration, network discovery, and troubleshooting. A device can work with the official integration and fail with Tuya Local, or the reverse.

  • SUPPORT 128 DEVICES: Support up to 128 Tuya smart home devices, such as ZigBee Motion Sensor, Leak Detector, BLE Finger Bot, Zigbee Door Sensor, BLE Thermometer, ZigBee Window Gate Sensor, etc. NOTE: Supports Tuya/SmartLife devices only.

Choose the official integration when ease of setup and broad compatibility matter more than local control. Investigate Tuya Local for the exact model when privacy, responsiveness, or operation during some internet outages is important.

Local alternatives for new devices

If cloud independence is a priority, consider devices that support:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread
  • Zigbee with a compatible coordinator
  • Z-Wave
  • ESPHome or Tasmota
  • Another documented local Home Assistant integration

Hardware such as Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 can support Zigbee and Thread/Matter setups, but it does not convert an arbitrary Wi-Fi Tuya device into a local Zigbee or Matter device. The product must actually support the relevant protocol.

Troubleshooting Tuya in Home Assistant

The device works in Tuya but is missing in Home Assistant

  1. Confirm that it is in the same Tuya or Smart Life account authorized in Home Assistant.
  2. Check that it is in the correct home or location.
  3. Reload the Tuya integration.
  4. Restart Home Assistant if necessary.
  5. Reconfigure or re-authenticate the integration if authorization has expired.
  6. Check whether the device category is supported.
  7. Consider whether the manufacturer’s rebrand exposes restricted cloud data.

The device appears but controls are missing

Check the diagnostics fields described above. Missing controls may reflect an SDK or product-definition limitation rather than a failed installation. Search for support for the exact model, not merely the brand or general product category.

Home Assistant repeatedly asks for authentication

Home Assistant documents a failure mode associated with updated Tuya terms and conditions. If this matches your situation, sign in to iot.tuya.com, accept any updated terms, restart Home Assistant, and reconfigure the integration. Menu names and policy prompts can change.

Region or country mismatch

Region problems are especially relevant to older developer-project setups. Tuya’s legacy guidance says that the cloud project’s data center must serve the region associated with the mobile-app account. The app region can be found under Me → Settings → Account and Security → Region in the documented flow. A mismatch can prevent a linked cloud project from seeing devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates are delayed or commands are slow

The official integration is identified as Cloud Push, so state updates and commands depend on Tuya’s service, account authorization, network connection, and the device’s own cloud behavior. This is expected behavior for a cloud integration, not evidence that Home Assistant OS itself is malfunctioning.

  • EASY INTEGRATION: Designed to connect effortlessly with a wide range of compatible motorized shade devices for a streamlined setup.
  • AUTOMATED SCHEDULING: Program custom schedules and routines for your motorized shades to enhance comfort and convenience in your home.

Will it work without internet?

Do not assume so. A device may remain connected to your local Wi-Fi while Home Assistant still needs Tuya’s cloud for authentication, state updates, or commands. To test, disconnect the WAN while keeping the LAN active and try one non-critical light or switch. Restore connectivity before testing appliances, heating, locks, or other safety-sensitive equipment.

Should you buy Tuya devices for Home Assistant?

For devices you already own, trying the official integration is sensible because setup is relatively simple and the device may be usable immediately. For new purchases, choose based on the exact model and the functions you need—not on the Tuya brand alone.

Before buying, ask:

  1. Does the exact model support Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or a documented local API?
  2. Is local operation explicitly documented?
  3. Does it require a vendor cloud account?
  4. Does Home Assistant support the exact model rather than only the brand?
  5. Are power, dimming, energy monitoring, temperature, modes, schedules, and alarms all exposed?
  6. What happens if the vendor cloud is unavailable?
  7. Does the manufacturer have a credible firmware and app-support history?

For a beginner who needs a Home Assistant host, Home Assistant Green is an optional appliance-like choice; it is not required for Tuya integration. Likewise, Home Assistant Cloud can provide optional hosted services such as remote access and voice-assistant connectivity, but it does not turn the official Tuya integration into local control.

For critical functions, avoid relying on a device that is unsupported, cloud-dependent, or missing essential controls. A better-supported local device can be a more dependable long-term choice than a cheaper product requiring a fragile workaround.

Conclusion

The official Tuya integration is the easiest current route for bringing Tuya Smart and Smart Life devices into Home Assistant. Install it through Settings → Devices & services, authorize it by scanning Home Assistant’s QR code with the mobile app, and reload the integration when adding devices later.

Its trade-off is clear: this is cloud-based control with device- and feature-level limitations. Use it when that dependency is acceptable, investigate Tuya Local for a specific compatible model when local operation matters, and favor Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, ESPHome, Tasmota, or another documented local option when buying new hardware.
