Turned Candlesticks: How Off-Axis Woodturning Creates an Unusual Shape

Turned candlesticks are wooden candleholders shaped on a lathe. One distinctive design turns sections of a single blank on different axes, giving the finished holder an intentionally off-kilter profile. Here’s how that project works, how it differs from a multi-piece candlestick, and what to know about the candle opening.

What makes a candlestick “turned”?

In woodworking, “turned” means shaped by rotating wood on a lathe while a cutting tool forms its profile. A conventional turned candlestick may have a centered, symmetrical shape. In Brian Simmons’s WOOD Magazine project, the maker remounts one blank on several different axes to create a series of offset cylinders and an asymmetrical silhouette. The project was updated August 8, 2025: WOOD Magazine’s off-kilter candlestick project.

How the documented off-axis project works

The project’s defining step is changing the blank’s axis between turning operations. Its transcript describes laying out the work, mounting it between centers, rotating it by hand to check that it clears the tool rest, roughing the blank, and then remounting it on successive axes to shape the sections. A Forstner bit is used to bore the candle opening; the piece is then sanded and finished.

  1. Lay out and mount the blank. Mark the intended sections and mount the wood between centers, following the project’s layout.
  2. Check clearance before powering the lathe. Rotate the mounted blank by hand and confirm it clears the tool rest.
  3. Rough and shape the first section. The project describes roughing the blank, then turning the section on its current axis.
  4. Remount for each offset section. Move the mounting points to the next axis and shape each successive section, as shown in the project.
  5. Bore, sand, and finish. Drill the candle opening with a Forstner bit, then sand and apply the finish described in the project.

The source names a roughing gouge and parting tool, with a carbide tool as an alternative. It also describes a square insert tool, miniature drive centers, and calipers. These are the tools and equipment named for this particular project, not a universal minimum kit for turning every candlestick. Its dimensions likewise belong to its design rather than establishing a standard size.

One-piece and multi-piece construction

The off-axis project forms its profile from a single blank. Other turned candlesticks can be assembled from multiple turned components. A 1997 American Woodturner search excerpt describes Christian Burchard’s component candlesticks, including figured wood and brass accent pins; the available description supports that example but not broader conclusions about the full article: American Woodturner archive.

Approach What the sources establish Design implication
Single-piece, off-axis One blank is turned on several axes in the WOOD Magazine project. The offset sections form an unusual profile without assembling separate turned components.
Multi-piece The 1997 excerpt describes candlesticks made from multiple turned pieces, with figured wood and brass accent pins. Separate components and accents can be part of the design; the excerpt does not establish a universal assembly method.

How to think about the candle opening

Do not assume every turned candlestick accepts the same candle. The opening or insert is a design detail that should be checked for the specific holder. For example, Selwyn House lists an ash candlestick with a solid brass insert sized for a standard 7/8-inch dinner candle. That fit applies to its listed product, not to turned holders generally: Selwyn House candlesticks.

Socket or pricket: two ways to hold a candle

A socket is a receptacle into which a candle seats. A pricket is a spike on which the candle is impaled. An antique reference documents both forms, including examples in turned wood, brass, or combined materials: Antique candlesticks reference. The terms describe how a candle is held; they do not by themselves identify an object’s age or establish how a modern turned holder is constructed.

A historical woodworking manual excerpt describes another construction arrangement: an upright joined to a separate base by a tenon, with the other end bored for the candle. That is evidence of one documented method, not a dating test or a complete history of candlesticks: Historical woodworking manual.
