Clamp it to the workbench, place a spacer beneath its bar to keep it level, and grip the workpiece between the jaws. For a more integrated setup, shop-made blocks or a removable tail-vise adaptation can mount a clamp to the bench, but those options require fitting and, in one case, cutting into the bench.
Choose the setup that fits your bench
| Method | Bench work | Clamp fit | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clamp-on temporary vise | Clamp to the bench; add a spacer beneath the bar | Parallel-jaw clamp | Quick, reversible workholding |
| Shop-made clamp blocks | Holes through the front or end apron; fitted blocks | WOOD Magazine’s block design is for Irwin SL300 and Jorgensen ISD 3 expandable bar clamps; test other profiles | A bench-integrated arrangement without altering the leg |
| Removable tail-vise adaptation | Elongated opening in the bench leg, support block and cap, plus bench-dog holes | Documented for a Jorgensen Cabinet Master with a removable sliding jaw | A dedicated tail-vise-style setup that can be removed from the bench |
These are distinct approaches, not universal conversion instructions. Start with the temporary setup if you want to avoid modifying the bench. The other two require checking the actual clamp profile and bench geometry before cutting or making parts.
Make a temporary vise with a spacer
- Choose a parallel-jaw bar clamp. The workpiece width must fit between its jaws.
- Clamp the tool to the bench. Position it so the jaws can hold the workpiece where you need to work.
- Put a spacer block beneath the bar. Adjust the block so the bar stays level rather than tipping under the workpiece.
- Grip the workpiece between the jaws. Check that the clamp and spacer are stable before applying force to the work.
WOOD Magazine describes this as a way to hold workpieces as wide as the clamp’s capacity. Its instructions do not specify clamp force, bench thickness, spacer dimensions or a safe-load rating, so those should not be inferred from the stated width.
Fit shop-made clamp blocks to the bench apron
WOOD Magazine’s arrangement routes a typical one-hand ratcheting bar clamp through holes in the bench’s front or end apron. The fixed jaw is removed, the bar rests in a groove in a shop-made block, and the bar’s roll pin retains it. The blocks are designed for Irwin SL300 and Jorgensen ISD 3 expandable bar clamps; that is compatibility guidance for this block design, not a guarantee that every clamp in either family will fit every build. WOOD Magazine’s clamp-block instructions were updated March 21, 2024.

- Pipe Clamp Jaws for Secure Woodworking: Heavy-duty cast steel vise clamp fixture firmly holds wood for gluing, drilling, and assembly.
- Sturdy Vise Clamp Fixture Design: 1-inch jaws easily slide onto standard pipe to create a reliable and adjustable clamping setup.
- Versatile Workshop Application: Essential tool for cabinet making, box assembly, and general woodworking projects.
- Package Includes: This set provides one complete pipe clamp jaw unit, ready for use with your own pipe.
- Simple and Effective Use: Position the jaws on your pipe to stabilize workpieces quickly, enhancing project precision.
- Check the clamp profile first. Compare the bar and roll pin with the block groove before drilling the apron or making a batch of blocks.
- Make and fit the blocks. The bar must seat in the groove and be retained by its roll pin.
- Route the clamp through the apron. Remove the fixed jaw as described and arrange the bar and block in the apron opening.
- Test the fit and movement. For a different clamp, adjust the groove as needed or use a larger roll pin, then confirm that the clamp sits securely and moves as intended.
This method leaves fitted blocks as part of the bench, so it is less quickly removable than simply clamping a tool to the bench. The article does not provide a generalized load rating for the converted setup.
Adapt a removable-jaw clamp as a tail vise
Popular Woodworking’s example uses a Jorgensen Cabinet Master clamp and modifies the bench to support it. The removable sliding lower jaw is reversed; the bar and fixed jaw mount beneath the benchtop; and the sliding jaw projects through an elongated opening in the bench leg. At the opposite end, a notched bearing block and cap support the fixed jaw. A row of bench-dog holes is aligned with the sliding jaw, with a matching dog. The clamp can be removed and returned to ordinary use. Popular Woodworking’s tail-vise example was posted January 29, 2009.

- NON-MARRING PADS: Grip firmly and protect your workpiece from scratches and scuffs
- QUICK-GRIP DESIGN: One-handed triggers release the clamps instantly
- STURDY: Resin construction with hardened steel bars to prevent flexing and bending
- 140LBS of force: Keep your workpiece together and evenly distribute 150LBS. of force
- EASY-TO-USE: Ideal for clamping smaller workpieces and working in confined areas
- Verify the clamp and bench geometry. The example is specific to a Cabinet Master with a removable jaw; check the actual clamp and bench before copying the arrangement.
- Reverse the removable sliding lower jaw.
- Mount the bar and fixed jaw beneath the benchtop.
- Cut an elongated opening in the bench leg. In the documented example, the sliding jaw projects 5/8 inch above the benchtop.
- Support the fixed jaw at the far end. Fit the notched bearing block and cap described in the example.
- Align the bench-dog row with the sliding jaw. The example uses 1-1/8-inch-diameter holes and a matching bench dog.
The 5/8-inch projection and 1-1/8-inch hole diameter are dimensions of this published example, not universal specifications for other clamps or benches. This method requires substantially more bench work than the clamp-on arrangement.

The woodworking instructions describe practical setups, not controlled load tests or safety certifications. None of the three articles establishes a measured safe-load limit for a converted clamp vise. Secure the clamp and bench, check that the spacer or fitted supports cannot shift, and follow the clamp maker’s rating rather than treating the conversion as a stronger or independently rated tool.
