What caused the cut-through traffic?
Construction-related backups formed near Rochester Road and Long Lake Road after the west side of Long Lake Road at Rochester Road closed on Monday, October 5, according to Local 4’s October 8 report. Drivers seeking to avoid the congestion turned onto residential streets.

Resident Rex Brown told Local 4: “Yesterday, we had almost a quarter mile back up on this street of cars at rush hour.” That is Brown’s description of what he saw, not an official traffic count or a measurement of traffic across Troy.

Local 4 reported that Troy’s event-specific through routes were north to Square Lake Road or south to Wattles Road. Choose based on your direction of travel and confirm the active route before leaving, since construction access plans can change.

The City’s project postcard describes a different instruction for its one-way construction phases: traffic traveling in the direction closed to through travel was detoured to Campbell Road. That phase-plan route should not be treated as interchangeable with the Square Lake and Wattles routes reported for the October Long Lake Road disruption.
Which neighborhood connections were planned to close?
According to the City spokesperson quoted by Local 4, Troy planned to close the Rochester Road connections for Sylvanwood, Trinway and Creston beginning Monday, October 12, for approximately three weeks. The reported closures applied to the streets’ ends at Rochester Road, not all access to the neighborhoods.

Residents were expected to reach the named streets through other neighborhood roads. The City said the closures would deter cut-through traffic and allow main-line paving to be completed before the end of the construction season. Local 4 also reported increased traffic enforcement.
How long was the Long Lake Road closure expected to last?
Local 4 reported on October 8 that the west-side closure at Long Lake Road and Rochester Road was expected to last about three weeks. This is the estimate given at the time of that report; it does not establish when the closure actually ended or whether the schedule changed.

How does this fit into Troy’s Rochester Road project?
The City of Troy’s 2026 project covers Rochester Road from 13 Mile Road to 14 Mile Road. Its published scope includes a new water main, replacement curbs and driveway approaches, sidewalk ramps, asphalt resurfacing, three pedestrian crossing islands, and restriping to a three-lane layout: one travel lane in each direction and a center turn lane.
The City’s project notice describes phased one-way traffic, with the opposite direction routed to Campbell Road during those phases. A separate July 21, 2026 update from the City of Rochester Hills provides broader construction context, but it is not a current status report for Troy’s October closure at Long Lake Road.

- If you live on one of the named streets, distinguish direct access to Rochester Road from local access through neighboring streets, which Local 4 said would remain available.
