No—not as a general claim. Some laboratory-made transparent-bamboo composites have shown flame-retardant behavior and water-repellent surfaces, but the evidence does not establish that the material is fireproof, waterproof, certified for building use, or ready to replace architectural glass. The results depend on the specific formulation and test; measurable water absorption, swelling, haze, and outdoor-weathering concerns still matter.
What transparent bamboo is
Transparent bamboo is an engineered composite, not a single standardized building material. Researchers modify bamboo to reduce the structure’s scattering of light, then introduce an infiltrant that helps light pass through. Treatments differ: published approaches include low-concentration sodium hydroxide pretreatment, delignification followed by sodium-silicate impregnation and surface modification, and other lignin-decolorization or resin strategies. A result for one recipe should not be assumed to apply to another.
For example, Wang and colleagues’ 2021 study in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces used pretreated bamboo, while a 2024 study in Research investigated a flame-retardant construction with a layered treatment. A separate 2024 weatherability study examined how lignin-decolorization methods affect performance under accelerated UV exposure. These are research specimens, not interchangeable product specifications: Wang et al. (2021), flame-retardant transparent bamboo (2024), and Kong et al. (2024).
How transparent is it?
Published results show substantial light transmission, but transmission is not the same as clear, glass-like vision. Wang and colleagues reported total optical transmissivity of up to 80% for a 1 mm specimen. The 2024 flame-retardant study reported 71.6% optical transmittance alongside 96.7% haze. That high haze means the specimen diffuses light significantly; it may admit daylight without providing the clear view expected through a conventional window.

In Wang and colleagues’ particular comparison, the bamboo specimen’s thermal conductivity was 0.203 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹, versus 0.225 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ for their transparent-wood comparison and 0.974 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹ for common glass in that study. They also reported the bamboo specimen’s mechanical strength as almost double that of the transparent-wood comparison. These values describe the tested specimens and comparison, not guaranteed performance for a building panel. See the 2021 study.
Does transparent bamboo burn, or is it fireproof?
The strongest supported claim is that a specific treated specimen showed improved fire-related test results—not that transparent bamboo is fireproof. The 2024 study’s design used a silane top layer, an intermediate silica layer formed through sodium-silicate hydrolysis and condensation, and an inner sodium-silicate layer. Its authors reported reductions in heat release, flame spread, combustible volatiles, toxic smoke, and carbon-monoxide release for the tested material.

The study reported an ignition time of 116 seconds, total heat release of 0.7 MJ/m², total smoke production of 0.063 m², and peak CO concentration of 0.008 kg/kg. These are results for that study’s construction and test conditions; they are not a building fire rating. The sources reviewed do not establish building-code approval or fire-rating certification. The 2024 study also reported a 15.29% efficiency enhancement for perovskite solar cells using its transparent-bamboo substrate; that result applies to the experimental cell configuration, not solar panels generally.
Is transparent bamboo waterproof?
No category-wide waterproof claim is supported. A surface described as superhydrophobic or hydrophobic can repel water at the surface without preventing the composite from absorbing moisture, swelling, or changing over time.

In a 2024 study of cross-laminated transparent bamboo, authors reported water absorption of 16.37–21.26% and thickness swelling of 10.22–21.74%. Those measured changes are a practical reason not to equate surface repellency with a material that cannot take up water. See the cross-laminated transparent-bamboo study.
Can it replace glass in a building?
The studies support describing transparent bamboo as a promising research material for possible future uses, not as a commercially available, certified, drop-in replacement for architectural glass. A thin specimen’s light transmission or thermal conductivity does not establish suitability as a window: a building product also needs reliable optical uniformity, appropriate strength and failure behavior, verified fire performance, moisture resistance, and durability in its intended exposure.

Before considering any proposed panel for a construction application, check the evidence for the specific product across these factors:
- Optics: visible-light transmission, haze or clarity, thickness, and uniformity across the panel.
- Structural behavior: strength, how it fails, and performance at the intended size and installation.
- Fire: test results and applicable certification for the finished product, rather than results for a laboratory specimen.
- Moisture and exposure: water uptake, swelling, surface-treatment durability, and performance under relevant weather conditions.
- Product readiness: manufacturing consistency, availability, and applicable building approvals.
The reviewed studies do not settle commercial scale, cost, or product certification. The 2024 weatherability work examined changes under accelerated UV exposure, identifying outdoor weathering as a concern; it does not establish long-term field durability for a building installation. Kong et al. (2024). A separate 2022 study investigated a lignin-modification strategy to improve overall performance, but a research composite still does not by itself establish a certified construction product: “High overall performance transparent bamboo composite via a lignin-modification strategy” (2022).

What the evidence means for construction
For now, treat transparent bamboo as an emerging engineered material whose properties depend on how it is made. The reported light transmission, reduced thermal conductivity in a particular comparison, and fire-related improvements in a specific treatment are promising research findings. They do not justify specifying it as fireproof, waterproof, or a substitute for certified architectural glass without product-specific testing and approval for the intended use.
