For striking, unusual flowers, choose the plant that suits your garden: grow celosia for sculptural annual blooms in a sunny bed, passionflower for a fast-growing vine with room to climb, or bat flower for a humid, shaded spot or sheltered container. “Weird flowers” is a useful description, not a botanical category, and the right choice depends more on light, climate, space, and care than novelty alone.
Choose by the conditions you can offer
| Flower | Best fit | Light and moisture | Space and care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celosia | A sunny bed or container for a warm-season annual | Full sun; well-drained soil | Grow from seed; choose a cultivar for its shape and mature size |
| Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) | A fence, trellis, or arbor where a vigorous vine can spread | Confirm local growing conditions and hardiness | Allow room and prune to control growth |
| Bat flower (Tacca species) | A humid, shaded garden location or sheltered container; indoors, a bright spot out of direct sun | Consistently moist, well-drained medium; humidity and airflow | A more demanding collector plant; availability may be limited |
Celosia: sculptural blooms for a sunny, warm garden
Celosia’s unusual silhouettes are different cultivar forms of the same garden favorite: crested heads can resemble coral or a rooster’s comb, plume forms look feathery, and wheat types produce upright spikes. UF/IFAS Extension says celosia “is very easy to grow and thrives in the heat.” It is a seed-propagated warm-season annual that does best in full sun and well-drained soil.
Start seeds with your local season in mind
UF/IFAS recommends starting celosia indoors about six weeks before the intended outdoor planting date. Its guidance describes germination in roughly one week at 70–75°F and advises keeping seedlings warm and on the dry side; cold exposure while young can disrupt blooming. These are Florida-based recommendations, not a universal calendar.
Minnesota Extension, by contrast, recommends planting outdoors only after soil is above 55°F and gives Minnesota gardeners a seed-starting schedule of about ten weeks before outdoor planting. That difference reflects local conditions. Check regional extension guidance, your seed packet, and local frost dates rather than transferring a planting window from another climate.

- Build a sunny border around the planting space you have. These pink sunflower seeds can be grouped in a flower bed, with spacing chosen for the mature variety.
- The listed packet contains 50 seeds for sowing. Use one planting area or label separate sections if you divide the packet across more than one part of the garden.
- Full sun supports growth: Choose a position receiving six or more hours of direct light. Prepare soil with drainage before sowing and avoid leaving the root area waterlogged.
- Let local weather set the planting date. Sow outdoors after frost risk has passed, and keep the soil appropriately moist while young plants are getting established.
- Expect variation within the display. Pink shades and flowering dates can differ between plants; provide room for growth and protect exposed stems when needed.
Match the cultivar to its height and flower shape
Choose a variety by the silhouette and size you want, not just the word “celosia” on a label. Large cockscomb heads can be heavy enough to need support; plume varieties and tall cut-flower cultivars have different habits. A University of Minnesota Extension cut-flower project evaluated 53 varieties over two growing seasons for bloom quality and harvestability, seasonal yield, and beneficial-insect activity. One celosia cultivar in that project could reach 4–5 feet; that height should not be assumed for every variety, and the trial was not a ranking of home-garden performance.
Passionflower: a dramatic vine that needs room
Passiflora incarnata has a distinctive flower with fringed structures and can attract hummingbirds and butterflies. UF/IFAS describes its blooms as about three to five inches across; each flower lasts roughly a day in summer and early fall. The plant is a perennial vine, so give it a fence, trellis, or arbor and space where its spread is welcome. It can grow quickly and may need heavy pruning.

UF/IFAS lists P. incarnata as hardy in zones 7B–11 in its Florida-focused guidance. Treat that as a reference, not a guarantee for your site: confirm local hardiness and conditions before planting. Also verify the species. Passionflowers are not interchangeable; UF/IFAS warns that P. edulis is predicted by the UF/IFAS Assessment to be invasive and is not recommended by IFAS. Check local invasive-plant guidance before buying any passionflower.

Tacca species have wing-like bracts and long, whisker-like structures that make them among the most distinctive flowers a gardener can grow. They suit a different setup from sun-loving celosia: UF/IFAS recommends shade outdoors, or bright indirect light indoors, along with humidity and good airflow.

- The Osteospermum 'Spider' flowers are rare, unusual and highly sought after.
- The plant is well-suited for garden beds or large containers.
- Plant in locations with full sun to partial shade.
- Osteospermum has become a very popular plant for flower arrangements in the past few years.
Use a wide, shallow pot with a rich, well-drained medium. Keep the soil consistently moist, but do not let it become waterlogged. Bat flower can be difficult to find in ordinary garden centers, and availability varies. It is also not a good cut flower: its blooms decline rapidly after cutting.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- SEED CONTENTS: Includes 20 rose seeds for starting flowering garden plants. The packet quantity refers to the seeds supplied for sowing.
- FLOWER-GARDEN USE: Grow seedlings toward a rose planting in a bed or border. Allow room for the plant to develop before choosing its final spacing.
- LIGHT AND SOIL: Choose a sunny site with good drainage. Prepare a growing medium that holds moisture while allowing excess water to drain away.
- CONTAINER PLANNING: Use a draining container with room for the roots. Check moisture regularly because container soil can dry more quickly than a garden bed.
- SEEDLING DEVELOPMENT: Handle young roots carefully when moving plants. Flower form and appearance develop as the seedlings mature and can vary between plants.

- Long Bloom Window: Strawflower mix delivers red, orange, pink, and white blooms late summer through early fall; harvest and dry for paper daisy crafts or bouquet flower seeds to enjoy color all year.
- Easy Sowing Options: Surface sow helichrysum bracteatum seeds indoors 6 weeks before last frost or direct early spring; ensure ~18" spacing; plants self-seed, providing bulk flower seeds for next season.
- Versatile Floral Value: Petals hold color after drying, so straw flower seeds for planting create everlasting wreaths, dried strawflowers in jars, and live displays grown from tall flower seeds.
- Drought and Heat Tolerant: 30" tall everlasting flower endures poor soil & blazing sun, brightening pollinator garden borders or pots with straw flowers perfect for fresh & dried bouquets.
- Sprouting: Fresh strawflower seeds germinate in 8-10 days at 70–75 °F, giving quick results from helichrysum seeds for planting flowers or start indoors. USDA zones 1-12.
Before you buy, check the plant label and your site
- Check your climate: Confirm your local hardiness conditions and frost dates. A Florida planting recommendation or Minnesota calendar may not fit your garden.
- Read the cultivar or species name: Celosia forms and mature sizes vary; passionflower species can differ in behavior.
- Assess light and moisture: Celosia needs sun and well-drained soil, while bat flower calls for shade, humidity, airflow, and steady moisture.
- Plan for mature growth: Give passionflower a support and room to spread; check whether a tall celosia cultivar or heavy bloom needs support.
- Be realistic about care: Seed-grown celosia is the straightforward option here; bat flower is a more demanding collector plant.
