You can evoke a medieval garden without recreating a historical site: make a modest garden room with a hedge, fence, or trellis; organize herbs and flowers in raised beds; and add an arbor or simple seat if space allows. The result can combine practical planting with privacy and a place to pause. Medieval gardens varied by period and setting, so treat documented features as inspiration—not a mandatory checklist.

What made a garden feel medieval?

Medieval gardens served more than one purpose. Herbs could supply food and medicine; orchards and other plantings provided food; and some larger settings included fishponds or dovecotes. Enclosed gardens also offered privacy, recreation, and space for contemplation. The mix depended on the place and its owners, rather than following one universal plan. The National Trust describes these varied functions in its overview of garden design through the ages and guide to gardens with medieval features.

Features associated with medieval gardens include hedges or wattle fencing, raised beds, trellis walkways and arbours, scented herbs and flowers, flower-rich lawns, and turf seats. These elements can suggest the character of a garden without requiring a large property or elaborate construction. Historic England’s gardens scheduling guide also makes an important distinction: the familiar formal knot garden belongs to the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, not to every period of the Middle Ages.

Use “medieval-inspired” for a contemporary design. Even the National Trust’s garden at Alfriston Clergy House was laid out in the 1920s to evoke medieval design; it combines features such as roses, topiary, a potager, herbs, and an orchard rather than surviving as an unchanged medieval garden.

Plan around your backyard, not a historical checklist

Begin by deciding what you want the space to do. A small herb garden and a quiet seating nook need different priorities from a flower-filled retreat or a compact productive garden. Before building, consider sunlight, drainage, water access, existing soil, available space, mobility, and how much upkeep you can manage. Historical examples show possibilities; they do not prescribe a modern planting plan.

  • For practical growing: prioritize accessible raised beds for herbs, flowers, or a small potager.
  • For privacy and retreat: start with a screened area, then add a seat and shade if the site allows.
  • For a blend: pair productive beds with flowering plants or a small fruit tree, choosing plants suited to your local climate and conditions.

Keep the layout proportionate. A few well-placed elements will read more clearly than trying to fit every historical feature into a small yard.

Build a garden room with enclosure

A hedge, fence, or trellis can define the garden as a distinct outdoor room. Historical descriptions include wattle fences and quickthorn hedges, as well as trellis walkways and arbours. For a present-day backyard, choose an enclosure that suits the site, desired privacy, maintenance capacity, and local conditions. A trellis can provide a lighter visual boundary than a solid fence; a hedge can soften edges but needs room and regular care.

Plan gates and paths as part of the enclosure, not as an afterthought. Leave enough clearance to reach beds, move tools, and sit comfortably. If access is a priority, make the route firm and wide enough for the people and equipment that will use it.

Use raised beds to organize herbs and flowers

Raised beds are a documented feature of medieval gardens and a practical way to give a contemporary garden structure. Arrange them in simple rows, pairs, or a small geometric layout according to the available space. Set their height and width for comfortable reach, and leave paths wide enough to work without stepping into the beds.

Mixing herbs and flowers can bring fragrance, color, and usefulness into the same space. Select varieties for your climate, sun exposure, soil, and water supply; the historical sources do not establish a single planting list that works everywhere. A small productive planting can echo the combination of practical and pleasurable uses found in historical gardens without suggesting every garden included the same crops.

Add an arbor or a turf seat if the site allows

A trellis walkway or arbor gives a garden a sheltered destination and can provide shade. It is an optional focal point, not a requirement. Place it where it will be useful in the actual pattern of sun, wind, and movement through the yard.

A turf seat is a more distinctive historical detail. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Cloisters describes turf benches in different shapes, including rectangular and U-shaped forms. They could be made with a low frame of brick, wood, stone, or woven willow, filled with soil and topped with turf; trellis shelter could provide added cover. See the museum’s account of turf seats.

For a modern build, consider how the frame and fill will drain, hold their shape, and be maintained. A turf seat also needs trimming and may be less comfortable or accessible than a conventional bench. If those trade-offs do not suit your yard, use a simple bench beneath a trellis to capture the feeling of a sheltered resting place without reproducing the construction.

Choose a level of historical detail that fits

An enclosed garden, raised beds, fragrant planting, and a place to sit can evoke medieval design with relatively little construction. More formal patterns need a chronological qualifier: Historic England notes knot gardens in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, so describe that look as later medieval or early Tudor inspiration. Avoid presenting it as the defining style of the entire medieval period.

Nor should a backyard imitate features that belong to a much larger estate simply for authenticity. Fishponds and dovecotes appear in some historical settings, but they are not necessary elements of a small domestic garden. The National Trust notes that original medieval gardens are rare, while individual features such as dovecotes and fishponds have sometimes survived. That is a reminder to distinguish a contemporary interpretation from a surviving historic landscape.
