Storm Shield Tornado Shelters sells underground fiberglass shelters designed for tornado protection. Getting people into a planned, protected location matters because the National Weather Service says, “Flying debris causes most deaths and injuries during a tornado.” A shelter is not a guarantee that a building will survive a tornado; its suitability depends on the exact model, site, installation, and supporting documentation.
Why tornado debris makes shelter planning important
The National Weather Service (NWS) advises families to decide in advance where they will shelter and how they can protect themselves from flying and falling debris. Its guidance says to avoid windows and identifies the interior part of a basement as the safest location in a home. Follow local emergency guidance and use the most protective available location.
If you are at home, choose a place where family members can gather when a tornado is approaching. Discuss how everyone will get there, and consider using a sturdy table or workbench for added protection when needed. An underground shelter is one possible option, but it should be considered as part of a practical safety plan—not as a promise of safety under every condition. What Storm Shield Tornado Shelters sells
Storm Shield Tornado Shelters identifies Containment Systems, Inc. as its manufacturer and describes underground fiberglass shelters for families and groups. The company says it uses industrial-grade fiberglass and composite manufacturing methods. Its contact form lists SS6, SS10, SS12-15flat, and SS21, and asks prospective buyers to select cash-and-carry or turnkey installation. These are manufacturer descriptions; current availability, dimensions, installation coverage, and model-specific details should be confirmed directly. How to assess a shelter before choosing one
Compare a specific shelter and installation against the conditions at your property and the needs of the people who will use it. Ask the manufacturer or installer for current, model-specific information rather than relying on a general product description.

- Capacity and usable space: Confirm occupant capacity and interior dimensions for the exact model.
- Access and operation: Ask about entry, egress, and ventilation, including how these work in the proposed installation.
- Site suitability: Review site and groundwater conditions and any installation requirements with a qualified provider.
- Documentation: Obtain current documentation for the exact model and installation, including any applicable test reports or standards claims.
- Local requirements and cost: Check applicable local requirements and request the total installed price for your location.
The manufacturer says its designs are reviewed against FEMA and National Building Code design criteria, and that shelters are built and tested for seismic loads, hydrostatic pressure, and wind load/load combinations. Those are manufacturer claims. The product pages reviewed do not provide independent, model-specific certification evidence, so ask for current supporting documents before treating a particular shelter or installation as certified. Storm Shield Tornado Shelters’ underground fiberglass shelters are different from Exeter Architectural Products’ STORM SHIELD, a custom see-through hurricane barrier for windows and doors. A barrier for an opening is not an underground shelter or, by itself, a tornado safe room. SARGENT’s StormPro is another separate category: door and window assemblies for tornado safe rooms, for which its manufacturer states UL listings to ICC 500 editions. Claims about one product should not be applied to another. Exeter Architectural Products STORM SHIELD SARGENT StormPro
