Choose topsoil by its source, recipe, texture, screening, and available test data—not by its label or color alone. For a new lawn, a typical target is 4 to 6 inches of good-quality settled topsoil where needed; calculate bulk volume as area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. Test soil before adding lime or fertilizer, and take extra care with drainage, tree roots, contaminants, and manure in food-growing areas.
What Topsoil Actually Is
Topsoil is the upper layer of soil used for growing plants. Its properties vary by site and supplier, so the word “topsoil” on a product label does not guarantee a particular source, texture, fertility, or cleanliness.
For planting, a workable loam or sandy loam may be suitable, depending on the site and intended plants. Very sandy soil may hold water and nutrients poorly, while high-clay soil can drain poorly and be difficult to work. Recommendations vary by region and use. Ask the supplier for the source and available test data rather than relying on appearance.
Topsoil Is Not the Same as Compost, Garden Soil, or Potting Mix
These products can differ in ingredients and intended use. Ask what is in a blend and whether it is suitable for your project.

| Material | What to check | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Topsoil | Source, texture, screening, and available test data | In-ground lawns and gardens |
| Compost | Ingredients and maturity | Organic matter amendment, as appropriate for the soil and plants |
| Garden soil or amended blend | Recipe and whether it is intended for in-ground or raised-bed use | Use according to its blend and intended purpose |
| Potting mix | Container-use label | Pots and containers when labeled for that purpose |
| Structural fill | Project specifications and local requirements | Construction or hardscape work where specified |
Do not assume planting soil is suitable as structural fill. Follow the project design and local requirements for material beneath slabs, pavers, footings, driveways, or retaining walls.
When Topsoil Helps in a Garden or Lawn
Purchased topsoil may help establish a lawn or improve an in-ground planting area when existing soil is insufficient or unsuitable. First consider the existing soil, site conditions, and the needs of the plants. For a lawn, a typical establishment target is 4 to 6 inches of good-quality topsoil where needed; this is not a universal depth for garden beds.
Good uses for topsoil
Use suitable soil to prepare an in-ground planting area or establish turf. For in-ground gardens and lawns, incorporating purchased topsoil and organic matter into the existing soil can help avoid a sharp layer. For new lawns over compacted or poor subsoil, blend some topsoil into the subsoil where appropriate to create a gradual transition.
When to be careful
Do not use added soil to conceal a drainage problem. Consider where water flows and how the proposed grade may affect buildings, neighboring properties, and existing site features.

Avoid raising soil over tree roots. Even a minor depth change can contribute to tree decline, so take care around established trees and seek local arboricultural guidance when needed.
Test Your Soil Before You Buy
Get a soil test and follow its recommendations before applying lime or fertilizer. Applying amendments by guesswork can cause problems; excess lime or nutrients can inhibit plant growth. Product and local laboratory recommendations vary, so use the sampling instructions and guidance for your area.
Ask the supplier for the soil source, blend recipe, and available test data. At a minimum, ask about pH and texture. Depending on the intended use and region, salinity, organic matter, coarse fragments, nutrient status, and contaminants may also matter. Screening can remove some debris, but it does not prove that soil has suitable chemistry or texture.
How to Choose Good Topsoil
Use this checklist when comparing suppliers:
- Ask where the soil came from and, for an amended blend, what the recipe contains.
- Ask whether it is screened and what the screening removes. Unscreened soil may contain rocks, roots, wood, bark, rhizomes, or other debris.
- Request available test data or a sample for analysis. Ask about pH and texture, and consider other tests relevant to the site and intended plants.
- Match the texture and blend to the site and plants; screening alone does not establish suitability.
- For food-growing areas, consider local advice about lead and other contaminants. Testing beyond routine soil properties may be expensive and is not routinely done.
- Do not rely on color or appearance alone. Soil may also contain herbicide residues.
For vegetable gardens, ask about lead testing when appropriate. If the site history raises concerns, follow local testing guidance before disturbing soil or planting food crops.

How Much Topsoil You Need
Use this formula to estimate bulk volume:
Cubic yards = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324
| Area and depth | Estimated volume | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 square feet at 4 inches | About 12 to 12.35 cubic yards | Rounded practical estimate; site conditions can change the delivered amount |
| 750 square feet at 6 inches | About 13.9 cubic yards | Estimate based on the volume formula |
These are estimates. Contours, grading, compaction, and settling can affect how much material is needed. For new lawn establishment, 4 to 6 inches of good-quality topsoil is a typical guideline, not a recommendation for every garden bed.
How to Use Topsoil Without Creating a Layering Problem
Prepare the receiving soil before spreading new material. For in-ground planting areas, incorporate purchased topsoil and organic matter into the top few inches of existing soil where appropriate. On compacted or poor subsoil for a new lawn, blend some topsoil into the subsoil to create a gradual transition.
- Check the site, existing soil, drainage, and intended plants before ordering.
- Follow soil-test recommendations before adding lime or fertilizer.
- Remove unwanted debris and loosen or prepare the receiving soil as appropriate.
- Do not till or heavily work soil when it is wet; this can damage soil structure.
- Spread the material and rake or level it without compacting the planting area.
- Establish the lawn or planting promptly and protect exposed soil from erosion as needed.
Drainage, Slope, and Site Features
Added soil changes grade and can change water movement. Plan drainage away from buildings and account for existing structures, trees, and local site conditions. NC State Extension states that a 1% to 2% slope is needed to direct water away from buildings, but the appropriate grading detail depends on the site. Check local requirements before making a grade change that could affect drainage.

For food-growing areas, consider possible contaminants and herbicide residues. Ask for source and test information, and follow local testing guidance when site history raises concerns. Do not treat a dark or rich appearance as proof that soil is safe.
Do not plant vegetable crops immediately after applying fresh or uncomposted animal manure. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension specifies waiting 90 to 120 days before harvesting food crops after raw or uncomposted manure is applied.
Bottom Line
Topsoil quality depends on its source, recipe, texture, and test data—not just its label or appearance. Test existing soil, match the purchase to the plants and site, use the volume formula to estimate quantity, and incorporate new material into existing soil where appropriate. Protect drainage and tree roots, and follow food-safety guidance when using manure or growing crops on a site with contamination concerns.
