A practical community-garden shortlist is bush beans, peas, leaf lettuce, chard, tomatoes and culinary herbs. These crops offer a mix of leafy greens, fruiting plants, legumes and flexible options, but they are not a universal ranking: choose varieties and planting dates for your local climate, sunlight, water access and plot schedule.
Six plants to consider for a community garden
University extension guides offer a useful starting point, not a one-size-fits-all planting prescription. Penn State’s crop recommendations referenced here are for USDA Zone 7A; its planting calendar is specific to Philadelphia. Oregon State University Extension provides additional guidance on growing conditions and garden planning. Check the recommendations for your own region before sowing.
1. Bush beans
Bush beans are a seed-started crop that can also be grown in containers. Oregon State University Extension describes beans as easy to grow with proper care. They can add a productive, non-leafy crop to a shared plot. Follow a local planting guide for sowing dates. Oregon State’s educator guide and Penn State’s Zone 7A recommendations provide crop guidance.
2. Peas
Penn State includes peas in its Zone 7A crop recommendations. Their sowing window depends on the region and season, so use a local calendar rather than borrowing dates from another city.

3. Leaf lettuce
Leaf lettuce and other salad greens can grow in partial shade, according to Oregon State University Extension. In a plot with mixed light, consider placing leafy crops in the less sunny beds and reserving the brightest spots for fruiting plants. Partial shade does not mean dense shade: vegetables need adequate light to grow.
4. Chard
Penn State’s Zone 7A list includes chard along with lettuce and spinach. Chard is another leafy option for a mixed planting plan; confirm that the season and variety suit your location.

5. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a fruiting crop and need a sunnier location than leafy greens. Oregon State University Extension says fruit-bearing plants such as tomatoes need six to eight hours of sun each day. Penn State includes tomatoes in its Zone 7A crop recommendations.
6. Culinary herbs
Herbs can fit into a community garden, and Oregon State University Extension also discusses them as an option for windowsill gardens. For an outdoor plot, choose specific herbs to match the site: their sunlight and water needs are not all the same.

Match the plants to your plot
Check sunlight before assigning beds
Oregon State University Extension’s educator guide gives six to eight hours of daily sun as the target for fruit-bearing plants such as tomatoes and peppers. It lists four to six hours of sun, or constant dappled shade, for certain leafy and other crops. The guidance is not a claim that vegetables thrive in dense shade. Oregon State’s garden-siting guidance, published in March 2020 and reviewed in 2024, explains how to assess a vegetable garden location.
Plan water access before planting
Make sure the garden can be watered reliably before choosing crops and laying out beds. Oregon State University Extension warns in its educator guide: “Not planning for irrigation is a common, and unfortunate, mistake in educational and community gardens.” A planting plan is only workable if people can maintain it through the season.

Use a local planting calendar
Planting dates vary by climate and season. Penn State’s Philadelphia planting guide gives dates for that area and suggests planting some crops every two weeks to extend harvest. Use local extension guidance for other locations rather than treating Philadelphia’s schedule as nationwide advice. See Penn State’s Philadelphia Planting Guide.
Leave room to rotate crops
When bed space and the garden’s schedule allow, rotate crops by plant family. Penn State advises avoiding the same plant family in the same spot in consecutive years where possible; rotation can help control soil-borne plant diseases. Penn State’s guide provides further planting guidance.

How to choose a mix for a shared garden
There is no single score that makes one crop the best choice across every community plot. Compare candidate plants against the conditions and routines your garden can support:
- Light: Give the sunniest available spots to fruiting crops such as tomatoes; consider leafy greens for partial shade.
- Timing: Check local sowing and planting windows, and coordinate them with the garden’s shared schedule.
- Water: Confirm that someone can water consistently before planting.
- Space: Account for bed dimensions and whether container growing is practical.
- Rotation: Leave room to move crops from one bed to another by plant family in future seasons.
For seeds, select varieties and planting dates suited to your location; the extension sources support crop categories, not a particular seed brand.
