Top 6 Landscaping Trends to Reconsider—and What to Do Instead

“Outdated” is subjective, but some common landscaping choices can make a yard less useful or harder to maintain. See six patterns to reconsider and what to do instead.

“Outdated” is a matter of taste, not a horticultural verdict. These six patterns are worth reconsidering when they make a yard less useful, harder to maintain, or poorly suited to local conditions. The goal is not to remove every lawn or avoid every trend; it is to choose materials and plants that work for your site and how you use it.

1. Gravel across the whole yard

Gravel can be a practical choice for drainage, lower-water landscapes, and plants suited to dry conditions. It can feel cold and repetitive, however, when it becomes the default surface everywhere. In sunny locations, rock mulch can also radiate heat and increase water loss around plants that are not adapted to those conditions, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains.

What to do instead

Keep gravel where it has a clear purpose or suits the planting. Break up large expanses with groundcovers, planted areas, or a mix of hardscape materials. Match the surface to the plants and local climate rather than treating gravel as a universal low-maintenance fix.

2. All-gray, ultra-minimalist hardscaping

Concrete-heavy layouts with straight lines and little contrast are a style choice, not a design mistake. But an expanse of similar gray surfaces can feel stark or characterless to some homeowners. The House Digest trend article, published April 11, 2026, presents that criticism as design commentary, not a measured consensus.

It is quieter and more environmentally friendly compared to gas-powered trimmers, with no need for fuel or oil. The compact design of this edging tool makes it convenient for limited storage spaces

What to do instead

Add texture, planting, or materials that connect the space to its surroundings if the hardscape feels flat. You do not necessarily need to replace what is already there: the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension recommends considering regional character and reusing existing hardscape where feasible.

3. Wall-to-wall lawn, regardless of use

A lawn is not automatically outdated. Turf can provide space for play and exercise, help prevent erosion, and filter runoff, according to Colorado State University Extension. The problem is keeping turf where it serves no practical purpose or is difficult to water and maintain.

What to do instead

Keep the lawn where people use it, and consider converting unused, awkward, or hard-to-maintain sections. Where turf still makes sense, the EPA advises choosing a lower-water variety suited to the local climate. Plan any conversion around nearby trees too: established trees may depend on water they previously received from lawn irrigation.

4. Repetitive foundation planting or a single-species look

Repeated shrubs and single-species plantings can look orderly, but they may offer little variety and be disconnected from local ecology. University of Maryland Extension notes that common foundation plants can be overused and that greater plant diversity can improve resilience and support beneficial insects.

What to do instead

Use a varied mix of plants suited to your region, soil, sun, and moisture. Repetition can still be useful for visual order; the aim is to avoid relying on one plant everywhere when a more diverse planting would work better. Maryland Extension’s suggestion to use at least 70% native plants applies to the Maryland-focused designs it describes, not as a universal target for every region.

5. Landscape fabric under permanent planting beds

Weed fabric is not a guaranteed weed barrier in permanent planted beds. Colorado State University Extension says it can inhibit water and air exchange and does not actually prevent weeds from growing in those plantings.

What to do instead

For a bed conversion, the Extension recommends removing existing fabric, evaluating the soil, and selecting a suitable mulch. Its advice concerns planted beds; it is not a blanket judgment about every use of landscape fabric. Organic mulch can help reduce evaporation and support soil health, while material choice should suit the plants and site.

6. High-input plants that do not suit the site

Plants that need more water, care, or conditions than a yard can provide may turn a landscape into a recurring maintenance problem. The EPA recommends choosing regionally appropriate plants and matching them to soil, sunlight, wind, and moisture. Native or drought-tolerant plants may be useful choices, but the right species depends on location and site conditions.

What to do instead

Check the site before choosing plants, and set realistic expectations for establishment. Groundcovers may need weeding and mulch while they fill in, and new native plantings may need moisture monitoring. “Low-water” does not mean no water: new drought-tolerant plants still need regular watering as they establish.

How to plan a landscape change

Start with the site, not a style label

Test soil before planting. The EPA advises: “Have your soil tested for nutrient content, pH, soil composition, and organic matter content.” Then consider sun exposure, drainage, intended use, foot traffic, and the amount of establishment care you can provide. Local Extension services can help interpret results and identify plants suited to your area.

Convert in manageable phases

Colorado State University Extension recommends phasing a large yard conversion, evaluating soil, and adjusting irrigation as needed. Think about how large plants will become and whether the existing irrigation system can still be accessed. If removing turf, make a plan for established trees that may lose water from that system.

Use mulch at a depth that fits the guidance

The EPA says three to four inches is appropriate for most plants, cautions that excess mulch can restrict water reaching roots, and recommends leaving a few inches around woody stems. Maryland Extension’s native-plant guide sets a three-inch maximum for its recommendations. Follow guidance suited to your planting and location rather than treating one depth as a universal rule.

Compare options on practical trade-offs

Before choosing a replacement, weigh local climate and sun, soil and drainage, how the area will be used, water needs after establishment, maintenance while plants establish, habitat value, material reuse, and installation cost or phasing. No one surface or planting style is best for every yard.
