#1 Best Overall
- ZIGBEE 3.0 STANDARD: Works with compatible Zigbee hubs or Echo devices with Zigbee hub built-in. Such as Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen and 2nd Gen), Echo Show 8 Gen3, Echo Show 10 (Gen2 and Gen3).Echo Studio, Eero 6, Eero Pro 6, Home Assistant, SmartThings 2015/2018, Aeotec, Hubitat, Homey Bridge, Homey Pro, Third Reality Hub Gen Plus and Third Reality Smart Bridge. Zigbee Hub Required.
- EASY SETUP and COMPATIBLE DESIGN: Maximize efficiency and convenience with space-saving design that won’t occupy the adjacent socket. Super easy setup with Compatible Echo Devices, just plug the Smart Plug in the wall outlet and say “Alexa, discover my devices” , then it will automatically find the plug. Please get in touch with us when you meet any problems or need further support.
- REAL-TIME ENERGY MONITORING: Monitor current consumption of your plug-in devices, effectively save energy and reduce waste. This function supported by Home Assistant, SmartThings, Hubitat and THIRDREALITY smart hub Gen2.
- SAFETY SETTING: In order to ensure your home safety, we also realize the function of restoring status that means users can customize on/off state after powered on again. Currently THIRDREALITY Hub Gen2 and Home Assistant (ZHA and ZigBee2MQTT) support this function.
- REMOTE CONTROL & VOICE CONTROL: Easily control your home appliances anytime, anywhere, no limited of time and distance. When Smart Plugs connect with compatible Amazon Alexa Echo Devices or other ZigBee hubs that can work with Alexa or Google Home, then you can free your hands, just delivering voice commands to turn on/off your plugs.
The five best choices
1. ThirdReality Smart Plug Gen3: best Zigbee value
This is the default pick for a Home Assistant system already using ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. It uses Zigbee 3.0, reports real-time power, and can act as a mains-powered Zigbee router. ThirdReality claims detection accuracy of ±1%; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent laboratory result.
Pair it close to your coordinator, confirm the switch and power entities, then move it to its final outlet and let the mesh settle. Configurable power-on behavior can be set through Home Assistant. It is a poor first purchase if you have no Zigbee coordinator. The official page showed $14.99 but was sold out when checked, so confirm the exact Gen3 model and stock before ordering.
2. Shelly Plug US Gen4: best local Wi-Fi option
Shelly Plug US Gen4 suits users who want local IP control without adding Zigbee or Z-Wave hardware. Home Assistant’s Shelly integration communicates locally and supports automatic discovery; Shelly’s documentation is at Shelly’s Home Assistant page. The U.S. plug supports appliances up to 1,800 watts and includes power monitoring.
The black single plug was listed at $24.99. A white two-pack at $44.99 and four-pack at $79.99 were listed but marked out of stock. Wi-Fi is convenient for a few devices, while a large fleet may be better served by Zigbee. Confirm that you are buying Plug US Gen4 rather than Plug, Plug S, or another generation.

3. Zooz ZEN04: best for an existing Z-Wave network
ZEN04 makes sense when your Home Assistant installation already has a Z-Wave controller and an established mesh. Home Assistant announced Zooz’s participation in its Works with Home Assistant program, whose criteria emphasize local operation, certification, availability, firmware access, and integration quality. Details are at Home Assistant’s announcement and Works with Home Assistant.
The current official ZEN04 price, rating, energy entities, and stock were not confirmed here. Check Zooz’s live listing before making a precise electrical or certification claim. A directly verified alternative is the Shelly Wave Plug, listed at $38.99 with a stated 15-amp, 1,800-watt U.S. rating and power monitoring.
4. Eve Energy: best premium Matter-over-Thread plug
Eve Energy is for households that already have Thread infrastructure and want Matter interoperability with Home Assistant and other platforms. The U.S. version is rated 120 volts, 15 amps, and 1,800 watts, uses a Type A/B plug, includes power-consumption monitoring, and has a physical switch with adjustable status-light behavior. Eve says no Eve cloud subscription or registration is required.
You need both a Matter controller and a Thread border router; the current Eve Energy requires a hub providing those functions. Matter commissioning proves the control path, not that every measurement shown in an app will appear in Home Assistant. Thread troubleshooting can also become confusing when several ecosystems provide border routers.

5. TP-Link Tapo P125M: best budget Matter-over-Wi-Fi control plug
Tapo P125M is a low-friction choice for lamps, fans, and ordinary appliances when you already have reliable Wi-Fi and want Matter-based on/off control. It does not need a Zigbee coordinator or Thread border router, although Home Assistant still needs a Matter controller and Matter Server.
Do not buy it specifically for energy monitoring without checking the exact U.S. SKU, firmware, and entities exposed in Home Assistant. A successful Matter pairing can provide switching while omitting measurements available in the Tapo app. It is a basic-control recommendation, not an energy-monitoring winner.
Energy monitoring: app graphs are not Home Assistant entities
Before buying a multipack, buy one unit and inspect its Home Assistant device page. Confirm whether the integration exposes:
- Instantaneous power in watts
- Cumulative energy in kilowatt-hours
- Voltage and current
- Power factor
- Resettable or non-resettable totals
- Update interval and availability after a restart or network outage
A vendor app may calculate or display data that the native Home Assistant integration or Matter implementation does not provide. Home Assistant cautions that Matter may not be the best route when a device has a stronger native local integration; see its Matter guidance.

Local control, cloud requirements, and network design
“Local” can mean several different things. Check separately whether switching, initial setup, energy data, firmware updates, and diagnostics work without the manufacturer’s cloud or account. Shelly emphasizes local communication, while Eve says registration and an Eve subscription are not required; neither statement should be generalized to every feature of every model.
Wi-Fi and Matter discovery can fail across guest networks, VLANs, firewalls, or multicast filters. Zigbee plugs usually route other Zigbee traffic, but routing quality depends on coordinator, firmware, placement, and mesh conditions. A mains-powered plug is not a guaranteed range extender.

Zigbee: ThirdReality
- Confirm a working Zigbee coordinator.
- Choose ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and start discovery.
- Reset the plug and place it within a few feet of the coordinator.
- Pair it, rename it, assign an area, and inspect switch and power entities.
- Move it to the final outlet and allow the mesh to settle.
If pairing fails, remove power, reset the plug, bring it close to the coordinator, and retry without relying on a weak route.
Wi-Fi: Shelly
- Power the plug and complete Shelly’s local-network setup.
- Reserve or record its IP address if you manage addresses manually.
- Allow Home Assistant’s Shelly integration to discover it.
- Test switching with the internet disconnected.
- Verify power entities and apply firmware updates through a supported path.
Z-Wave: Zooz or Shelly Wave
- Confirm the Z-Wave controller is operational.
- Start inclusion in the Z-Wave integration.
- Include the plug near the controller, then rename it and inspect entities.
- Move it to the final location and allow route rediscovery.
If inclusion fails, exclude or reset the device before trying again; a failed inclusion does not prove the plug is defective.

- Confirm a Matter controller and Thread border router.
- Start Matter commissioning in Home Assistant.
- Scan or enter the setup code.
- Check Thread stability and the entities exposed by the current firmware.
- Do not commission it into multiple controllers until the primary setup works.
Matter over Wi-Fi: Tapo P125M
- Install and verify Home Assistant’s Matter Server.
- Connect the plug to a compatible Wi-Fi network.
- Commission it with the Matter setup code.
- Verify local switching and inspect all entities before buying additional units.
Electrical, physical, and safety checks
A 15-amp label applies only to the specified regional model and does not make every load suitable. Resistive lamps are generally simpler than motors, pumps, compressors, or devices with high startup inrush. Check certification, thermal limits, and manufacturer restrictions before using a plug with a space heater or other high-wattage appliance. Never exceed the regional rating, and do not use an indoor plug outdoors.
Check whether the body blocks the adjacent receptacle, whether two units fit side by side, button orientation, LED brightness, manual override, child-lock behavior, and the physical size of the exact U.S. version. Do not use an inexpensive smart plug as the sole safety or control mechanism for medical equipment, aquarium life support, critical heating, medication refrigeration, or security hardware.
Alternatives and model-specific cautions
- Kasa KP125M: Consider it if you already use Kasa, but distinguish the Matter model from older Wi-Fi versions and verify energy entities.
- Meross MSS315 and related Matter plugs: Potentially inexpensive, but model, firmware, and measurement support require verification.
- KAUF PLF12: Interesting for ESPHome users who accept more technical setup and must check availability and certification.
- Sonoff Zigbee plugs: Model and hardware revision determine coordinator compatibility and power monitoring; the brand name alone is insufficient.
Recommendations by situation
- Already use ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT: ThirdReality Smart Plug Gen3.
- Already use Z-Wave: Zooz ZEN04 after checking the live listing, or Shelly Wave Plug.
- No coordinator and want local control: Shelly Plug US Gen4.
- Have Thread infrastructure and multiple ecosystems: Eve Energy.
- Want inexpensive basic Matter switching: Tapo P125M.
- Need energy monitoring: Prefer ThirdReality, Shelly Plug US Gen4, or Eve Energy, then confirm the exact entities in your Home Assistant installation before scaling up.
Companion hardware you may need
ThirdReality requires a Zigbee coordinator; Home Assistant’s official options include Connect ZBT-1. Z-Wave users need a compatible controller documented through the Z-Wave JS integration. Eve Energy requires hardware that provides both Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functions. Home Assistant’s official hardware pages and Matter documentation explain the relevant infrastructure.
