The best smart-home gadgets do more than add another app: they remove a recurring chore, provide a useful warning, or coordinate several systems safely. Before buying, choose a primary platform—Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant—then check the exact device, hub, protocol, subscription, and installation requirements.
Matter-certified products can make basic controls easier to share across platforms, but Matter is not a guarantee that every feature works everywhere. Keep manual switches, keys, local controls, and safe fallback procedures available when the internet, power, app, or cloud service fails.

Google explains that Matter devices in Google Home may require a Matter hub for remote control and automation, while Thread devices require a Thread border router. Compatible Google products include the second-generation Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer: Google’s compatibility directory and Matter and Thread guide. Alexa’s documentation lists compatible Echo and eero controllers and supported categories including lights, plugs, sensors, locks, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, and robotic vacuums: Amazon’s Matter documentation.
What to check before buying
- Choose the household’s primary platform. A mixed-brand home can work, but multiple apps and hubs increase maintenance.
- Check the exact protocol. Matter is an application-layer standard that can use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Thread is not the same thing as Matter.
- Confirm the hub or bridge. Thread devices need a Thread border router; Zigbee and Z-Wave products generally need compatible hubs; some products require a proprietary bridge.
- Check feature limits. Matter may expose basic controls while advanced maps, facial recognition, energy reports, video history, or proprietary routines remain in the manufacturer’s app.
- Plan for failure. Test what works during internet, power, router, battery, and sensor failures. Use a UPS for a router or controller when an important local routine depends on it.
- Secure accounts and networks. Use multifactor authentication, unique passwords, firmware updates, and a separate IoT network where practical.
Wi-Fi is familiar and widely available but can increase network traffic and cloud dependence. Thread is a low-power mesh option for sensors and similar devices, but it needs border-router infrastructure. Zigbee and Z-Wave are mature low-power mesh systems that usually require hubs. Bluetooth is useful for setup or nearby control but is not always suitable for whole-home automation.

The 16 smart-home gadgets worth considering
1. Smart-home hub or controller
Automates: scenes, schedules, presence routines, and multi-brand coordination.
Consider an Amazon Echo Hub or compatible Echo for Alexa, a Google Nest Hub or Google TV Streamer for Google Home, an Aqara hub for an Aqara-heavy installation, SmartThings for broader protocol support, or Home Assistant for technically confident users who prioritize local control. A useful routine is: when the last person leaves, lock the door, turn off selected lights, lower the thermostat, and arm security devices.

Check: supported Matter device types, Thread capability, local operation, household access, and maintenance requirements. Home Assistant offers flexibility and privacy but is not the easiest zero-maintenance choice: official site.
Skip it if: you only need one standalone smart plug or light and do not want another controller.
2. Smart lighting
Automates: sunrise and sunset lighting, occupancy-based illumination, wake-up scenes, and bedtime dimming.
Philips Hue is a mature lighting ecosystem; Nanoleaf, WiZ, IKEA, and GE Cync provide other options, including Matter-compatible products depending on model. For permanent ceiling fixtures and shared rooms, smart switches are usually more practical than smart bulbs because the physical switch remains usable.
Example: motion after 10 p.m. turns on a hallway light at 20% brightness with a warm color temperature. Color bulbs cost more and rarely improve ordinary automation. Skip them if household members regularly turn off the wall switch.
3. Smart plugs and in-wall switches
Automates: lamps, fans, holiday lights, schedules, and—on supported models—energy monitoring.
Matter plugs are a simple starting point. Lutron Caséta is a strong choice for reliable permanent lighting controls: official site. Meross sells Matter plugs, switches, and energy-monitoring products: official Matter collection. During the research period, Meross listed a two-pack Matter plug at $34.99, but prices and availability change.
Example: turn on a lamp at sunset and off when the home enters sleep mode. Never use a plug with a space heater, iron, or other high-load appliance unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that application. Renters should favor plug-in products; homeowners should obtain approval before modifying wiring.
4. Smart thermostat
Automates: schedules, away setbacks, occupancy adjustments, HVAC alerts, and energy reporting.
Google Nest and ecobee are leading candidates; ecobee is particularly useful when room sensors are important: official site. Google’s compatibility guidance covers scheduling, sensors, HVAC monitoring, and possible C-wire or Nest Power Connector requirements: thermostat guide.

Example: set an energy-saving temperature when everyone leaves and restore comfort before arrival. Savings are not guaranteed; climate, insulation, equipment, utility rates, and behavior determine results. Check heat-pump, two-wire, C-wire, and professional-installation requirements. Renters need landlord approval.
5. Motion, contact, temperature, and presence sensors
Automates: occupancy lighting, door and window alerts, freeze warnings, room-specific climate control, and “nobody is home” routines.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteExample: opening the bathroom door between midnight and 6 a.m. turns on low-level lighting for five minutes. Motion sensors can miss someone sitting still; presence sensors may work better in offices and living rooms. Battery life, mounting, pets, and false alarms matter. Matter’s device library includes contact, occupancy, temperature, and humidity sensor classes: CSA Matter 1.3 library.
Skip it if: you will not test placement or replace batteries. A sensor placed too high may miss the first water; one pointed at a window or pet area may generate nuisance triggers.
6. Smart lock
Automates: auto-locking, temporary guest codes, access notifications, and arrival or departure routines.
Consider Aqara U-series, Yale, Schlage, Level, or Z-Wave locks according to the platform and protocol you already use. Aqara’s U.S. store listed U50, U100, and U300 bundles with hubs; observed prices ranged from about $153 to $217, but current prices should be checked at Aqara’s store.

Verify deadbolt, backset, strike, door alignment, battery warnings, remote-access requirements, and emergency access. Keep a physical key or keypad. Smart locks add convenience and access management; they do not automatically make a door physically safer. Avoid default auto-unlock if the consequences of a false trigger are serious.
7. Video doorbell
Automates: visitor, package, and motion alerts, speaker chimes, and two-way communication.
Google Nest Doorbell suits Google Home; Ring suits Alexa; Arlo, Aqara, and other brands may be preferable for particular storage or platform requirements. Wired models generally offer more consistent availability, while battery models are easier to install but require charging and may handle events differently. Google describes current Nest Doorbell features and optional video history through Google Home plans: connected-home store.

Do not treat an always-on indoor camera as a default purchase. A contact sensor, alarm sensor, or local camera with a physical privacy control may be better. Review microphone, camera, location, and occupancy permissions, and remove devices from accounts before selling or moving.
9. Robot vacuum and mop
Automates: scheduled cleaning, room selection, no-go zones, docking, and cleaning while occupants are away.
Roborock, Dreame, Eufy, Ecovacs, and iRobot offer different combinations of navigation, mopping, dock automation, and mapping. Robotic vacuums are included in the Matter device library, and Alexa lists them among supported Matter categories, but verify whether advanced maps and cleaning modes remain app-dependent: CSA library and iRobot.
Example: clean downstairs after departure and pause when someone returns. Brushes, bins, filters, mop tanks, cords, thresholds, dark floors, clutter, and pet accidents still require attention. Include replacement parts in ownership costs. Skip camera-equipped models if mapping privacy is a concern.
10. Smart smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm
Automates: remote alerts, whole-home announcements, and emergency lighting or ventilation routines where appropriate.
Use listed, approved alarms and follow local building codes. Matter includes smoke and CO alarm types: CSA Matter 1.2 library. Smart connectivity improves notification reach; it must not replace compliant alarms or be used to disable them. Confirm interconnect behavior and battery replacement requirements.

Automates: leak and freeze alerts while you are home or away.
Place sensors beside the water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, sinks, HVAC condensate equipment, basement low points, and crawl spaces. Matter includes water-leak detectors: CSA library.
Example: a confirmed leak alerts two adults and requests a smart valve to close. A sensor that only sends a notification does not provide automatic mitigation. Check battery life, audible alerts, network behavior, and whether the sensor can detect water at floor level.
12. Smart water shutoff valve
Automates: whole-home shutoff, confirmed leak response, vacation mode, and sometimes usage monitoring.

These systems usually require professional plumbing work. Plan bypasses for irrigation, fire sprinklers, and essential appliances. A false reading, failed valve, or outage can create inconvenience, so use confirmation for ambiguous events and retain a manual shutoff procedure. Do not promise insurance discounts; verify eligibility with the insurer.
13. Smart garage-door controller
Automates: open-door alerts, status checks, arrival routines, and carefully configured closing.

- Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.
Meross lists Matter garage-door products, but opener and model compatibility must be confirmed: official collection. Example: alert if the garage remains open after 10 p.m. Do not automatically close it solely from a timer unless reliable door status and obstruction protection are present. Preserve the opener’s safety reversal system and manual release.
14. Smart blinds or curtain controller
Automates: morning opening, sunset privacy, heat reduction, and occupancy simulation.
Retrofit motors vary by blind type and may require proprietary hubs or regular battery charging. Example: close west-facing shades during hot afternoon sun, then reopen them when conditions improve. Avoid fixed schedules that ignore unusual weather or someone working at home. Verify the motor’s fit and emergency manual operation.
15. Smart sprinkler or irrigation controller
Automates: zone schedules, rain skips, seasonal adjustments, and flow or leak alerts on advanced models.
Meross lists Matter sprinkler products: official collection. Confirm zone count, wiring, valve type, local watering restrictions, and weather-service accuracy. Automation cannot repair clogged heads, broken pipes, poor drainage, or bad zone design. Skip it if irrigation changes are prohibited by a landlord or community association.
16. Smart air purifier, fan, or dehumidifier
Automates: air-quality-triggered operation, humidity control, sleep schedules, and filter reminders.
Alexa lists fans and air purifiers among supported Matter categories: Matter support documentation. Example: increase purifier speed when particulate matter rises, then lower it during sleep. Check whether the device’s sensor is accurate enough for your purpose, include filter costs, and provide drainage or overflow protection for dehumidifiers. Do not automate equipment in ways that block required ventilation or create unsafe humidity.

Beginner renter
Start with a compatible smart speaker or controller, smart bulb or plug, motion sensor, leak sensor, and portable air purifier. These are mostly reversible installations. Avoid hardwired switches, thermostats, sprinkler controllers, and plumbing valves without landlord approval.
Homeowner focused on convenience
Combine a hub, smart switches, thermostat, lock, robot vacuum, and doorbell. Build one routine at a time—such as “away,” “arrive,” or “bedtime”—and ensure every household member can override it.
Safety-first home
Prioritize compliant smoke/CO alarms, leak sensors, a water shutoff valve, garage controller, doorbell, exterior camera, and lock. Use reliable status confirmation and manual fallback for locks, garage doors, valves, and security systems.
Privacy-conscious setup
Favor a local-control hub, Matter/Thread sensors, wired cameras with local storage, and smart switches instead of cloud-dependent bulbs. Omit indoor cameras and microphones from private spaces. Home Assistant is powerful for local control but requires more setup and maintenance: official site.
Reliability, privacy, and accessibility checklist
- Use multifactor authentication and unique passwords.
- Update firmware and replace batteries before they fail.
- Know what remains functional without internet, cloud access, or power.
- Keep physical keys, switches, manual water shutoffs, garage releases, and local controls.
- Give guests and household members appropriate access rather than sharing one account.
- Review data retention, recording location, microphones, cameras, presence data, and subscriptions.
- Test routines with pets, multiple phones, visitors, late workers, and sensor failures.
- Use voice control as an option—not the only control method—for people with mobility, vision, or hearing needs.
The safest design separates convenience from high-consequence actions. Lights and music can usually run automatically. Unlocking a door, closing a garage, shutting off water, or changing an alarm state deserves reliable status signals, a local fallback, and sometimes human confirmation.
Bottom line
Do not buy all 16 gadgets at once. Choose an ecosystem, then buy the first three devices that support one genuinely useful routine—such as sunset lighting, away-mode climate control, or leak detection. Matter can simplify basic cross-platform control, but always verify the exact hub, Thread, subscription, local-control, and feature requirements before installing.
