A two-base router kit is the most practical starting point if “do-it-all” means handling both repeatable edge work and cuts that begin inside the workpiece. A compact router may be the better fit when most jobs are light and easy handling matters more than broad capability. The right choice depends on the work you actually do—not on a claim that one router suits every shop.
What a do-it-all router needs to handle
For many woodworking jobs, versatility comes down to two different ways of guiding the bit: along an edge at a set depth, or down into the material to start a cut away from an edge. A router that can do both expands the range of work you can take on, but it may be heavier and less nimble than a tool chosen specifically for lighter tasks.
Think about your typical projects before choosing. Cabinet edges and profiles favor steady, repeatable edge work. Mortises and stopped cuts call for a controlled entry into the workpiece. If both appear regularly in your plans, a kit with fixed and plunge bases is a credible all-around format.
Fixed base or plunge base?
| Base type | Best suited to | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed base | Repeatable cuts along edges, such as profiling | The bit is held at a set depth while you guide the router along the work. |
| Plunge base | Mortises, stopped cuts, and other cuts that start within the workpiece | The base lets you lower the spinning bit into the material in a controlled way. |
| Combination kit | Shops that regularly do both kinds of work | One motor can be used with either base; the trade-off is the size and handling of a full-size tool. |
These are task distinctions, not a ranking. A fixed base is useful when you want a consistent depth along an edge; it is not a substitute for plunge entry on a cut that must begin in the middle of a board. A plunge base supports that entry, but it does not make a larger router as easy to maneuver as a compact one.

Full-size combination kit or compact router?
| Option | Choose it when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Full-size combination kit | Your work includes both edge routing and plunge-entry cuts. | Versatility comes with more size and weight, which can feel cumbersome on small, detail-heavy jobs. |
| Compact router | Light edge work and easy handling are your priorities. | Plunge capability depends on the kit or an added base; check what is included rather than assuming it is supplied. |
A compact router is a legitimate choice when most of your work is light edge routing and maneuverability matters most. It is not automatically an incomplete choice: some kits or add-on bases provide plunge capability. Confirm the exact configuration before buying, especially if you expect to make mortises or stopped cuts.
Bosch 1617EVSPK: a combination-kit candidate
Woodwork Starter’s review, “Ultimate Beginner Woodworking Router Review 2025,” dated June 8, 2026, names the Bosch 1617EVSPK as a do-it-all candidate and describes it as a fixed-and-plunge-base combination. Those kit details are secondary-source claims; confirm the current contents and specifications with Bosch before purchasing. - PRECISION: This router tool features a fast and precise depth adjustment system that allows both macro and micro adjustment, while the quick clamp system allows motor to be easily adjusted or moved from base to base
- CONVENIENT: The wood router provides a straight edge guide to lead router along edges of work piece or up to 3-5/8 inch from edge; also features an angled cord exit to keep the cord out of the way when working
- VERSATILE: This BOSCH router for woodworking provides enhanced bit capacity with a fixed base that accepts bits up to 1 5/16 inch in diameter; versatile bit changing system allows easy bit changes using two wrenches or spindle lock and one wrench
- PR20EVS Colt Palm Router is a trim router with a 1.0 Horse Power 5.6 amp variable speed motor and speeds from 16,000 to 35,000 RPM
- DURABLE: The compact router features a rugged aluminum fixed base that is durable, solid and precise; the PR20EVS has unique finger support pockets for additional stability, especially when trimming edges
The model is worth considering if you want both base styles in one kit, but the format alone does not settle whether it suits your projects. Weigh the benefit of switching between edge work and plunge cuts against the handling demands of a full-size router, particularly if your work is mostly small or detail-heavy.

If you already own a compatible router, a multi-function base may extend the tasks it can handle without replacing the tool. Fine Woodworking’s June 14, 2023 article “Tools to look out for this spring,” by Asa Christiana, describes the Woodpeckers Multi-Function Router Base for edge routing, pockets, circles, and mortising. The article says bar diameters are available for most major routers; that is not a guarantee of fit for a particular model.

- Dual LEDs help illuminate the work surface
- Variable-speed dial allows the user to match speed of of the router to the application
- Depth adjustment ring allows for fast and easy height adjustments
- Soft start motor with full-time electronic feedback allows the motor to maintain speed during cuts
- Electronic brake slows the motor down faster after the unit is shut off
Before buying a base or jig, verify compatibility with your specific router and the bar diameter it requires. Treat router bits and base plates the same way: choose them for a defined job and confirm that they fit your router. No particular bit set or universal compatibility is established here.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Power Through Wood Working - The 800W 1.25 HP 6.5-Amp handheld router delivers plenty of power for routing and trimming jobs - from shaping hard oak table edges to trimming soft pine shelves. Variable speeds (10,000–32,000 RPM) lets you match speed to the material: lower settings prevent burning in hardwoods, higher settings give clean finishes on softwoods and laminates
- Adjustable Depth for Precision - Smooth rack‑and‑pinion system on this fixed base router lets you dial in exact cutting depths quickly and locks tight during use. Whether you're cutting slots for door hinges or cutting straight grooves, your workpiece stays accurate - no slipping
- Illuminate Your Work Area - Dual bright LED lights light directly on the cutting path, making it easy to follow layout lines even in dimly lit cabinets or under-counter spaces. You'll always see exactly where the bit is going, reducing errors and boosting confidence
- Quick Lock System & Comfort Grip, Less Fatigue - The quick lock system makes it easy to adjust depth or change bases - so you can switch between freehand curves and straight cuts without trouble. The rubber-covered handle gives you a comfortable, non-slip grip that cuts down on hand fatigue during longer routing jobs
- Built to Last with Dust Control - The aluminum body and base hold up job after job, while the included dust hood hooks up to a standard shop vac to catch dust right where it cuts. A cleaner workspace means you can see better and spend less time cleaning up
How to choose for your projects
- Choose a fixed-base router if your main need is repeatable-depth work along edges and you do not expect to make plunge-entry cuts.
- Choose a plunge router if cuts such as mortises and stopped cuts are central to your work.
- Choose a combination kit if you regularly need both styles and are comfortable handling a full-size tool.
- Choose a compact router if light edge work and maneuverability matter more than full-size versatility; check whether plunge capability is included or available as an add-on.
- Keep or expand an existing setup if a compatible accessory can perform the tasks you need. Confirm model and bar fit before ordering.
