The word “stand” covers three different kinds of product in workshop catalogs: a configurable bench base that can become a tool stand, a stand built for one tool family, and a support that holds the workpiece or a machine during cutting. They are not interchangeable. Identify the job first, then compare the models that fit it.
Three meanings of “tool stand”
Before comparing products, decide which of these you need:
- A base you configure for several uses, such as a workbench, an assembly table, or an outfeed table.
- A dedicated workstation built around a specific tool or tool family.
- Material or machine support that holds long stock, catches offcuts, or steadies a saw or other machine.
Configurable bench base
Kreg’s Universal Bench base is the clearest example of a configurable product. The manufacturer’s product page describes it this way: “With the Kreg® Universal Bench, you can easily create a workbench, assembly table, tool stand, or outfeed table in a custom size to fit your space, your projects, and your needs.” That is Kreg’s product copy, not an independent assessment. The standard-height version has legs that adjust from 31 to 39 inches. The listing describes 12-gauge steel legs and 16-gauge rails. A compatible benchtop is chosen separately, and the optional 3-inch dual-locking casters are sold separately (Kreg product page).
This type suits a shop that needs one base to change roles. Its limit is that the base is only half the setup: the top, its size, and the load you put on it determine what the finished stand can handle.

- APPLICATION: Ideal for supporting a variety of smaller, compact benchtop planers, band saw, belt sanders, power tools and accessories…etc. while giving you a sturdy, yet small and dependable work surface
- FEATURES: 500 pound load capacity to accommodate a wide assortment of tools and equipment, adjustable foot pad for stability and a gauge metal base powder coat finish for long-term durability

IMPORTANT: The UT1002 Universal Tool Stand is not designed to be used with casters as it destabilizes the stand. Adding casters will void the warranty on this product.
- DIMENSIONS: 32-Inch working height. 18" x 27" storage shelf, 14” x 25” expandable MDF split top with ruled surface (expands to 20”x25”)Please note: This stand is engineered to work with one adjustable foot/leveling pad. Four are not required.
Dedicated rotary-tool workstation
Dremel’s 220-01 is built around a rotary tool. Dremel describes it as a drill press, rotary-tool holder, and flex-shaft stand. Its flex-shaft holder adjusts from 16 to 29 inches, and the page names the Dremel models it supports (Dremel product page, Canadian site). Because the Canadian listing is region-specific, confirm the same model and specifications on your local Dremel site before buying.
This is a model-dependent choice. If your rotary tool is not among the supported models, the holder will not fit it, and the workstation will not become a general tool stand.

Portable power-tool stand
Bosch’s gravity-rise stand is a portable support for power tools. The listing says it has a universal mounting system compatible with most major brands of miter saws and benchtop tools. It also has wheels and a gravity-rise mechanism for moving the stand. “Most major brands” is Bosch’s compatibility claim, so verify the exact saw or benchtop tool model against the stand’s listing and the tool manufacturer’s instructions (Bosch stand page, US site).
Material and machine support
A woodworking category guide separates several support types that are often grouped together: roller stands, sawhorses, outfeed tables, mobile bases, and perforated worktops. Each holds something different. A roller stand supports long stock as it moves. A mobile base carries a machine. A perforated worktop holds work flat during assembly or cutting. Benches and assembly tables are a separate category again (Workbenches and Support Stands guide).

How to match a stand to your tool or task
Work through these questions in order. Each answer narrows the options before you look at capacity or price.
- Is the stand holding a tool, a machine, or the workpiece? A handheld rotary tool, a saw, and a length of lumber call for three different products.
- Does the stand serve one job or several? If you will switch between assembly, cutting, and storage, a configurable base is more likely to fit. If the job is one tool, a dedicated stand is simpler.
- Does the tool model appear in the manufacturer’s compatibility list? Check the exact model number, not the product family. Look for mounting pattern, base footprint, and whether an adapter is needed.
- Is the height right for the person and the machine? Compare the stand’s working height with the table or outfeed surface it must line up with. Adjustable legs help; a fixed-height stand may not.
- Is it stable under the actual load? Use the manufacturer’s stated rating for the tool or material you will put on it. Do not judge capacity by how sturdy the frame looks.
Compatibility and mounting
“Universal” in a product name describes what the manufacturer claims the stand will accept. It does not confirm your combination. Before buying, check three things on the product page or in the manual: the supported tool models, the mounting method (clamps, bolts, or a fixed pad), and the footprint against your tool’s base. If a Dremel-style holder or a Bosch-style mounting system needs an adapter, budget for it now rather than after the stand arrives.

Height, stability, and capacity
Working height matters most when the stand must line up with another surface. An outfeed table that sits even slightly below the saw table will cause binding or tilting of long stock. Adjustable legs, such as the 31 to 39 inch range on the Kreg standard-height base, let you set that alignment. Confirm the stand’s stated load for the tool or material and make sure the height setting still meets that rating.
Mobility and locking
Wheels and casters make it easy to move a tool or support between jobs. They also introduce movement during use. The woodworking category guide advises locking rolling supports before cutting, and matching the capacity of a mobile base to the weight of the machine and the condition of the floor. Test the lock before the first cut: a caster that settles or rolls under load is a hazard. The Bosch gravity-rise design is built for moving the stand, so confirm how it sits in use. For the Kreg base, the dual-locking casters are an optional purchase, so factor their cost and fit into the decision.
Best Value
- Maximum versatility
- Durable and stable under heavy loads
- Easy movement and storage of planer and stand
- Universal accessory adapter for use with most oscillating tool accessory brands
- Includes: (1) Mobile base (1) Stand (1) Hardware (1) MDF top (1) Shelf
What comes in the box
Many bases and stands ship as components. A bench base may need a separate top, shelf, casters, or mounting hardware. The Kreg example sells the compatible top and casters separately. For each product you consider, list everything you will need to reach a finished, usable stand and check whether those items are included, optional, or sold separately.
Footprint and storage
Measure the floor area the stand occupies and the space it needs when folded, parked, or moved. A configurable bench base can be sized to fit a particular wall or corner, but it occupies that space permanently. A portable saw stand can be parked against a wall when not in use, provided the wheels and gravity-rise mechanism clear the floor. Check the material travel path as well, because long stock may need clearance on both ends of an outfeed or roller stand.
Quick Recap
Practical guidance
- If you need a flexible base for several jobs, a configurable bench base is the most adaptable choice, but budget for the top and any casters.
- If you use one rotary tool, check the named models in the manufacturer’s listing before anything else.
- If you move a miter saw or benchtop tool around the shop, check the exact model against the stand’s compatibility statement and lock the wheels for every cut.
- If you support long stock, choose the support type that matches the job, and match its capacity to the weight of the material and machine.
