Toilet “explosions” are not established as common, and the phrase describes more than one event. Sewer-cleaning blowback can upset a toilet during high-pressure municipal line flushing; a separate, documented hazard involves certain pressure-assisted toilet vessels bursting and shattering the tank. Neither should be confused with a toilet combusting. If your toilet may contain a recalled Flushmate II 501-B system, follow the specific CPSC recall instructions.
What people mean by a “toilet explosion”
The phrase can refer to two distinct plumbing events with different causes and responses. In the first, high-pressure flushing of a municipal gravity sewer line can cause blowback that upsets a connected toilet. In the second, a pressure-assisted flushing vessel inside the toilet tank can burst, releasing stored pressure and potentially lifting the lid and shattering the tank.
| Event | Where the problem starts | Trigger and possible result | Relevant response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sewer-cleaning blowback | A municipal gravity sanitary sewer line | High-pressure sewer flushing can upset a connected toilet. | Seek a plumbing professional for an apparent plumbing failure; the source describes the phenomenon but does not provide universal homeowner repair steps. |
| Pressure-assisted vessel burst | The toilet’s pressure vessel | A vessel can burst and release stored pressure, potentially lifting the lid and shattering the tank. | For the recalled Flushmate II 501-B system, follow the CPSC’s model-specific recall instructions. |
How sewer-cleaning blowback happens
The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) describes an “upset” or “blown toilet” in connection with emergency or preventive high-pressure flushing of gravity sanitary sewer lines. It characterizes blowback as rare, while noting that it occurs often enough to influence some municipalities’ preventive-flushing programs. That description is not evidence that ordinary toilets commonly explode, nor does it describe combustion.
If a toilet is upset during apparent sewer work, the initiating issue may be in the sewer line rather than the toilet itself. A licensed plumbing professional is a reasonable resource for an apparent plumbing failure; the available guidance does not establish a universal homeowner repair procedure. NASSCO’s explanation is available in its technical resource on blown toilets.

The pressure-assisted tank hazard and the Flushmate recall
Some toilets use a pressure-assisted flushing vessel inside the tank. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that recalled Flushmate II 501-B systems can burst at or near the vessel weld seam, releasing stored pressure. The pressure can lift the tank lid and shatter the tank, posing impact and laceration hazards and causing property damage.
The CPSC’s 2018 recall covered Flushmate II 501-B systems manufactured from September 3, 1996, through December 7, 2013. The systems were installed in toilets from American Standard, Corona, Crane, Kohler, and Mansfield. These details identify the specific recalled system; a toilet brand or pressure-assisted design alone does not establish that a particular unit is affected. Check the CPSC recall notice for identification information and current instructions.

What CPSC reported for the 501-B system
In its 2018 notice, the CPSC reported 1,446 burst reports in the United States and 7 in Canada associated with the recalled Flushmate II 501-B system. The agency also reported approximately $710,000 in property damage and 23 injury reports, including one injury requiring foot surgery. These are reports tied to that recalled system, not a rate for toilets generally or a count of all toilet failures.
What to do if you may have a recalled 501-B
- Use the CPSC notice to check whether your system is the recalled Flushmate II 501-B model.
- If it is, stop using it and turn off its water supply.
- Flush the toilet to release internal pressure, as directed by the recall notice.
- Contact Flushmate through the notice to request the free replacement unit and technician installation.
The recall remedy is a free replacement and technician installation. Do not substitute a generic tank part or buy another recalled system as a remedy; follow the notice’s instructions.

A separate Flushmate recall
A 2012 CPSC recall notice for Flushmate III Series 503 systems documented 304 burst reports and 14 impact or laceration injuries. Those figures concern that separate recalled system and should not be combined with the 501-B reports or generalized to toilets overall. See the 2012 CPSC recall notice for its details.
Are toilet explosions common?
The available figures do not answer how often toilets overall burst or are upset: they are tied to particular recalls, and there is no general incidence rate or population denominator in the sources cited here. NASSCO calls sewer-cleaning blowback rare. CPSC recall reports establish that particular pressure-assisted systems have failed, but do not show that toilet explosions are common across toilets generally. The title’s suggestion that they are “more common than you might think” is therefore not supported as a broad statistical claim.

Does a sewer explosion mean methane caused it?
Not necessarily. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code-development document discusses prominent sewer explosions involving other sources of flammable gas or waste, including ruptured high-pressure gas distribution lines, an abandoned improperly capped gas well, and illegal flammable-waste discharge. It also says some cases attributed to sewer gas involved exceptional ignition sources. These are examples discussed by the NFPA document, not a complete survey of sewer incidents or proof that methane explains every case. See the NFPA document.
