Start with the correct service instructions
Tapered roller bearings are used in different arrangements, so the right lubricant, removal method, fit, and installation procedure depend on the assembly. Before work begins, identify the bearing and consult the equipment maker’s service procedure and the bearing maker’s instructions. Do not apply housed-unit guidance to a different bearing arrangement.
Relubricate for the application
Use the specified lubricant and quantity, and assess the operating conditions before setting a service interval. Timken describes its housed-unit relubrication table as a suggested starting point, not a universal schedule; its instructions say to review and adjust amounts and intervals as conditions require.

Watch for both under-lubrication and over-lubrication
Too little grease can reduce lubrication-film thickness. Too much can churn inside the bearing and generate heat. When adjusting lubrication, observe the bearing and its temperature rather than assuming that adding more grease will solve a heat problem.
Remove the bearing with suitable, guarded equipment
Use a press or bearing puller that is appropriate for the assembly and properly guarded when removing a bearing from a shaft. Wear suitable personal protective equipment, including safety glasses. Avoid improvised, forceful removal methods: the removal procedure should protect both the worker and the components. Timken’s maintenance manual provides handling and removal guidance.

Install it to the equipment maker’s requirements
Follow the specified fit, tolerance, torque, and alignment requirements for the application. Do not force the unit into place; Timken’s housed-unit instructions state, “Do not use excessive force when mounting or dismounting the unit.” Follow the original equipment manufacturer’s procedure for the assembly. Consult Timken’s housed-unit installation instructions when working on a unit covered by them.

Timken’s 2014 instructions set a maximum operating temperature of 250°F (121°C) for the housed units they cover and warn against heating components with an open flame. That temperature limit is not a general limit for every tapered roller bearing. For another design or assembly, use the equipment and bearing makers’ instructions.
