Throne’s Toilet Camera Really Does Photograph Toilet Contents—Here’s What It Tracks and What It Costs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. Throne is a real, toilet-mounted health-tracking device with a camera that captures images or video of toilet contents. It is designed to point downward into the bowl—not at the person using it—and its software analyzes stool, urine, hydration, and bathroom patterns. But it is not a doctor, and Throne’s own privacy policy acknowledges that human anatomy could be collected inadvertently.

The original viral headline came from a TechCrunch report published October 20, 2024, when Throne was promoting a beta product. The current product is called Throne One, and its pricing, hardware, and subscription model have since changed.

What Throne One actually is

Throne One is a clip-on sensor that attaches to the side of a toilet bowl. It is not a replacement toilet, does not require plumbing work, and does not need permanent electrical installation. The company says setup involves charging the unit, clipping it to the bowl, pairing it with the mobile app, creating user profiles, and connecting it to Wi-Fi.

According to Throne’s technical specifications, the device includes:

Throne lists compatibility with iOS 16 or later and Android 14 or later. It also supplies a 13-foot charging cable. An external USB-C battery can be used, but Throne says that battery is not included.

Compatibility is not necessarily universal. Before buying, check the shape and clearance of your toilet rim, whether the downward-facing camera will have an unobstructed view, Wi-Fi strength in the bathroom, and whether your phone meets the stated operating-system requirements.

Does it really take pictures of poop?

That description is substantially accurate, although “takes pictures” simplifies what the system does. Throne describes a camera-based system that captures visual information from toilet contents, including stool and urine. Its software then processes those signals to produce health-related trends and insights.

That is different from saying that Throne films people while they use the bathroom. The company says the lens is angled into the bowl, and its product is designed to capture toilet contents rather than the user. Throne also says the device remains inactive when it cannot detect a paired phone, unless someone manually presses the on-device session-assignment button.

Those are the manufacturer’s stated operating rules, not the result of an independent security audit. In a shared bathroom, profile assignment and session activation deserve particular attention. A nearby phone could belong to the wrong household member, and visitors, children, or other unregistered users may not understand that a camera-equipped device is present.

What does the camera see?

Throne says its camera points downward and that image-recognition filters identify and delete frames that appear to contain a person or human anatomy. The company presents this as an early privacy step in its cloud-processing pipeline.

However, the wording in Throne’s current privacy policy is more cautious than the marketing explanation. The policy says the device may collect visual and audio information, including video of toilet contents, and acknowledges that images of human anatomy could be collected inadvertently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters:

  • Designed not to see the user means the camera’s orientation and software are intended to avoid capturing people.
  • Cannot ever capture anatomy would be an absolute guarantee that Throne’s own policy does not support.
  • Frames are filtered or deleted does not necessarily mean the underlying data never reaches the company’s systems.

In other words, Throne’s design goal is privacy-preserving, but the available documentation does not justify treating accidental anatomy capture as impossible.

What data does Throne collect?

Throne’s privacy documentation describes several categories of information:

  • Audio and visual information from the toilet and its contents
  • Video of toilet contents
  • Audio associated with urinary flow
  • Health information and derived health insights
  • Device, account, application, and usage information

The distinction between the different data types is important. A raw image is not the same as a de-identified image, an aggregated statistic, a derived health insight, or account metadata. A service may process an image to produce a trend even if the app primarily shows the resulting interpretation rather than the original image.

Throne says it will not sell users’ health data without explicit consent and says the company will not sell the data. That is a statement from the company, not an independently verified guarantee. Because policies and business arrangements can change, buyers should read the current privacy policy before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can employees see the images?

“The camera is pointed at the bowl” does not mean that nobody at Throne can access the resulting data. In its privacy explanation, Throne says raw waste images may be reviewed by a small team of doctors for labeling and artificial-intelligence training after identifying information is removed. It also describes limited access for customer-support, engineering, and product personnel in certain troubleshooting situations, with audit trails.

That creates several separate privacy questions:

  • What raw images are retained, and for how long?
  • When are images deleted after analysis?
  • Is consent for AI training optional and separate from consent to use the service?
  • Can a customer permanently delete raw images, derived insights, and account data?
  • What happens to data if the company is acquired or stops operating?

The public materials cited here do not establish every answer. Do not assume that “de-identified” means no human can ever access the underlying image, or that cloud processing is the same as local-only processing.

What health information does it claim to provide?

Throne positions One as a wellness and trend-tracking system. Its product materials describe insights related to:

  • Stool and urine patterns
  • Hydration
  • Gut health and gut rhythm
  • Urinary health or urinary function
  • Bathroom habits and changes from a personal baseline

The intended benefit is passive, longitudinal tracking. Instead of manually recording every bathroom visit, a user can review patterns over time and potentially bring changes to a clinician.

That does not make Throne a general-purpose diagnostic device. The available product materials support language such as “signals,” “patterns,” and “insights,” not a claim that the device can reliably diagnose cancer, gastrointestinal disease, urinary disease, or any other condition. A normal app result cannot rule out illness, and an alert cannot establish its cause.

Visible blood, black or tarry stool, persistent bowel changes, severe pain, unexplained weight loss, significant dehydration, or other concerning symptoms should be discussed with a medical professional rather than managed through an app alone.

How much does Throne One cost in 2026?

Throne’s current pages show slightly different price formatting. The product page lists the hardware at about $399 and membership at $5.99 per month. Throne’s support page lists the device at $399.99, membership at $6 per month, or $70 per year.

The practical conclusion is the same: this is not a one-time $399 purchase if you want the full service. Throne says membership includes AI-powered analysis, unlimited session data capture, cloud storage, software updates, automated logging, and trend insights. The product page advertises the first three months of membership free, but promotions can change and should be confirmed at checkout.

Who might benefit from it?

Throne may appeal to people who value passive tracking and want a longer-term record of bathroom patterns, hydration, stool changes, or urinary function. It could be useful as a conversation aid for someone already tracking digestive symptoms, provided the information is treated as supplemental rather than definitive.

The device’s clip-on form factor, lack of plumbing installation, long stated battery life, and support for multiple profiles may also make it more convenient than replacing a toilet or manually recording every session.

Who should skip it?

Throne is a poor fit for buyers who:

  • Do not want a camera in the bathroom
  • Are uncomfortable with cloud-connected health data
  • Want a diagnostic test rather than a wellness tracker
  • Do not want a recurring membership fee
  • Share a bathroom with many people who may not have consented
  • Have a toilet, phone, or Wi-Fi setup that may not be compatible
  • Are likely to become anxious about ordinary day-to-day variation

It is also not a substitute for laboratory testing, urinalysis, a colonoscopy, medical examination, or clinical judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy questions to ask before buying

  1. Can the device function without cloud storage or a paid membership?
  2. Can image capture be disabled while retaining nonvisual tracking?
  3. How long are raw images retained?
  4. Can all raw images, derived insights, and account information be permanently deleted?
  5. Are human reviewers involved, and under what conditions?
  6. Is AI-training consent separate from service consent?
  7. What happens when an unregistered person uses the toilet?
  8. How are data access and profile assignment handled in a shared bathroom?
  9. What happens to the data if Throne is sold or shuts down?

These questions are more useful than relying on a broad label such as “privacy-safe.” The company’s camera orientation and filtering may reduce exposure, but they do not eliminate the need to understand collection, access, retention, deletion, and consent.

Alternatives to a camera-equipped toilet

If the goal is simply to understand health patterns, less invasive options may be sufficient. A manual stool and symptom log, an ordinary hydration-tracking app, or a conventional wearable can provide useful context without placing a cloud-connected camera in the toilet.

For persistent or alarming symptoms, a clinician-directed workup is the more appropriate alternative. Those who specifically want another camera-based toilet-content tracker may encounter Kohler’s separate Dekoda product. Dekoda is not made by Throne and should not be treated as the same device or as automatically more private. Reporting has also examined changes to Kohler’s earlier encryption wording, underscoring why buyers should read the current privacy terms of any connected health product.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The headline is basically true: Throne One uses a camera to photograph or record toilet contents. It is designed to point into the bowl, not at you, but Throne’s own privacy policy acknowledges possible inadvertent anatomy capture and describes company access for limited purposes. With hardware priced around $399 and a required membership costing about $6 per month or $70 per year, Throne makes sense only for buyers who value passive bathroom tracking enough to accept the cost, cloud processing, and privacy trade-offs.
