Gemini for Home is Google’s conversational AI layer for compatible speakers, displays, cameras, doorbells and the Google Home app. The redesigned app is the control centre around it, combining device control, activity history, camera events and automations in one interface.
Google announced the system on October 1, 2025. By August 18, 2026, it had expanded through early-access updates, new countries and languages, camera features and app improvements. The exact experience still depends on your country, language, devices, Google Home account, rollout status and subscription.

The important distinction is that Gemini for Home is not simply Google Assistant with a new name. Google intends it to replace Google Assistant on compatible smart speakers and displays while adding natural-language camera search, household summaries, more flexible device control and AI-assisted automation creation.

What Gemini for Home actually is
Gemini for Home has three connected parts:
- A voice assistant: It is designed to handle more natural conversations, follow-up questions and requests involving several smart-home devices.
- Home intelligence: It can interpret camera events, activity history and household context, where the relevant device and plan support those features.
- App intelligence: Inside Google Home, it can help find devices, search camera history, control multiple products and create automations from plain-language instructions.
Google describes the system as being optimised for a shared, action-oriented household rather than as a general-purpose chatbot. For example, a request such as “turn off the lights, close the blinds and lock the door downstairs” is closer to its intended use than a standalone factual question.

- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
That does not mean every request will work on every installation. The device must expose the required control to Google Home, the account and location must be eligible, and some advanced functions require Google Home Premium.

What happens to Google Assistant?
Gemini for Home is intended to replace Google Assistant on compatible Google smart speakers and displays. The transition is not necessarily simultaneous for every device, account or property.
Google has described the rollout as taking place at the home level. If you manage more than one Google Home, one home may receive the upgrade before another. A compatible device may also receive the new assistant experience without gaining every Gemini feature available on newer hardware.
Existing Google Home equipment is therefore not automatically equivalent to new Gemini-oriented hardware. Voice-assistant access, camera analysis, Home Brief, Ask Home and automation tools each have their own eligibility requirements.
The redesigned Google Home app
The redesigned app is intended to replace a fragmented experience in which users moved between different areas of Google Home and, for some older Nest products, the Nest app.
Home
The Home tab provides the main control surface. It brings together favourites, devices, rooms and device-type dashboards. Google’s redesigned layout also supports swiping between pinned favourites, all devices and dashboards.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This is where you would normally adjust a thermostat, switch lights, view a camera or control a compatible lock. Ask Home is also available as the persistent Gemini entry point for natural-language requests.
Activity
The Activity tab combines household events from connected first-party and third-party devices. Depending on the equipment and plan, it can include camera events, other device activity and Home Brief summaries.
The practical benefit is a single history rather than separate places for different kinds of activity. It does not guarantee that every device’s historical data or every Nest feature will transfer identically from the older Nest app.
Automations
The Automations tab shows upcoming automations and provides the rebuilt automation editor on iOS and Android. It supports one-time automations and conditional starters, such as running a routine only when someone is home.

Ask Home can also help create an automation from a description. Any automation involving locks, heating, alarms, ovens or other consequential equipment should be reviewed manually before it is enabled.
Google explains the redesigned navigation, camera experience and Nest support in its Google Home app announcement.
What Ask Home can do
Ask Home is the app’s Gemini-powered interface. Supported examples include:
- Multi-device control: “Turn off all the lights and close the blinds in the family room.”
- Camera search: “Find the clip where the dog got on the couch.”
- Automation creation: “Create an automation to turn on the porch lights and lock the front door every day at sunset.”
- Home questions: Ask what happened while you were away or look for a particular event in camera history.
- Device discovery: Find a particular light, thermostat, camera or automation without navigating through several menus.
These are examples of supported use cases, not a promise that every phrasing will work identically. Clear room names and unique device names improve reliability. If two lights are both called “the hallway light”, Gemini may not know which one you mean.
A request can also fail because a third-party integration does not expose the required action, even if Gemini understands the sentence correctly.

Camera intelligence: useful, but not a security guarantee
Traditional smart cameras generally identify predefined categories such as people, vehicles, animals or packages. Gemini-powered features aim to interpret events more descriptively.
Depending on the camera, account, country and subscription, Google describes features including:
- More detailed event descriptions.
- Natural-language searches across camera history.
- Home Brief summaries.
- Questions about live video.
- Smarter notifications.
- Recognition of people, animals, packages and vehicles.
- Personalised references, including a known pet’s name where supported.
You might ask whether the bins are outside, whether a dog entered a room or what happened while you were away. Some features, including certain Home Brief, live-video search and pet-memory capabilities, require the Advanced plan of Google Home Premium according to Google’s support documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAI camera descriptions can be wrong, incomplete or based on an event that was only partly visible. Results depend on the camera’s field of view, lighting, network connection, retention period and whether the event was recorded and categorised. Do not rely on an AI description for an emergency, safeguarding decision or other critical monitoring. When an event matters, review the original footage.
Google Home Premium: what is free and what is paid?
There is no single “free versus paid” switch for Gemini for Home. Google separates basic smart-home control, voice-assistant access, camera intelligence, Home Brief and other advanced functions.
Google Home Premium is Google’s whole-home subscription for advanced Gemini and camera capabilities. Google says it is also included with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions. Plan benefits and eligibility can change, so check the current feature-specific documentation before subscribing.
| Capability | What determines access |
|---|---|
| Basic device control | Compatible device, integration, account and rollout status |
| Gemini voice assistant | Compatible speaker or display, supported market, language and home-level rollout |
| Ask Home | App version, region, account, device support and feature rollout |
| Camera descriptions and searches | Camera generation, retention, region and applicable Google Home Premium tier |
| Home Brief and advanced camera intelligence | Feature availability and, for some functions, the Advanced plan |
| AI-assisted automations | Supported account, app, device integrations and rollout status |
The safe conclusion is neither “Gemini is free” nor “Gemini requires a subscription.” Check the requirement for the particular feature you want on Google’s current Google Home release notes and its camera and Premium documentation.

- Nest Thermostats launched in 2015 or later.
- Nest Protect smoke and carbon-monoxide emergency alerts.
- Nest x Yale Lock passcode management.
- Previous-generation Nest cameras and doorbells.
- Older Nest devices transferred through the Google Home migration process.
Google has also described a one-click public-preview transfer process for older Nest thermostats, cameras, locks and smoke alarms. Availability and migration steps can change, so use the current instructions shown in the Google Home app.
“Supported in Google Home” does not necessarily mean complete parity with the Nest app. Check four separate questions:
- Does the device appear in Google Home?
- Can you perform the controls you need?
- Can you access the historical video or records you rely on?
- Does the desired function require a subscription or public preview?
This distinction matters especially for owners of older cameras, locks and thermostats. Migration can reduce app switching while still leaving differences in historical data, specialised settings or workflows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Google’s performance claims
Google says the redesigned app loads more than 70% faster on some Android devices, has nearly 80% fewer crashes than a comparison period several months earlier, loads camera live views 30% faster, reduces playback failures by 40% and delivers more than six times the frame rate when scrolling camera history.
These are Google’s own measurements, not independent benchmarks. They suggest the redesign is aimed at practical problems—slow launch, failed live views, unreliable playback and awkward event browsing—but individual results will vary by phone, network, camera and app build.
Google also says it made more than 100 feature and performance improvements during the preceding year. The meaningful question for a household is whether the app opens more reliably, camera previews load faster and daily controls require fewer app switches.

- Update the Google Home app from your device’s app store.
- Open Google Home and select the relevant home.
- Look for an invitation, banner or Gemini for Home upgrade prompt.
- Review the features offered and any subscription requirements.
- Accept the upgrade if the home is eligible.
- Check individual device, language and household-member eligibility.
To manage Continued Conversation, Google lists this path: Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant → Continued Conversation.
Do not assume a particular app version is universally required in August 2026. Google documented earlier expansion requirements such as versions 4.12 and 4.18, but later builds may supersede them.
Best Value
- 7" Touchscreen Display: View weather, calendar, YouTube videos, and Google Photos on a vibrant 1024x600 resolution screen.
- Google Assistant Built-In: Control smart home devices, set reminders, and get answers hands-free with voice commands.
- Smart Home Integration: Compatible with over 200 devices from 50+ brands, including lights, cameras, and thermostats.
- Entertainment Hub: Stream music and videos from YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, and more with high-quality sound.
- Personalized Routines: Use Voice Match to access your calendar, commute, and reminders tailored to your voice.
If the invitation does not appear
- Confirm that the Google Home app is current.
- Check whether your country and language are supported.
- Confirm that the correct home is selected.
- Check the compatibility of the relevant speaker, display, camera or Nest product.
- Determine whether the requested feature requires Google Home Premium.
- Allow for gradual rollout; installing the newest app does not guarantee immediate access.
- Use the feature-specific support page rather than treating the missing invitation as proof that the entire rollout has failed.
Family members and children may have different access depending on account type, age, supervision, country and language. Third-party devices can also respond differently from Google’s own hardware.
What changed after the 2025 announcement?
The October 2025 announcement is the starting point, not the complete current product. During 2026, Google’s release notes recorded continuing expansion and feature changes, including:
- Early access in additional countries and languages, including Germany and Mexico.
- Broader access for family members, including children in supported contexts.
- Improvements to Continued Conversation beyond its original US-English limitation.
- Camera features such as live-video search and pet memory.
- Model improvements for multi-step commands, calendars, alarms, lists and smart-home control.
- Additional app performance and reliability work.
Because the service remains under active development, country and language lists should be treated as time-sensitive. The Google Home release notes are the best place to check current availability.
Should you upgrade?
Basic smart-home owner
If you mainly control lights, plugs, speakers or a thermostat, the redesigned app may be useful, but Google Home Premium is harder to justify solely for basic control. Gemini is most valuable if natural-language, multi-device commands save you meaningful time.
Multi-camera household
This is the strongest case for Premium. Searching camera history in ordinary language, receiving richer summaries and asking questions about live video can be more useful than manually scanning timelines—provided your cameras and market support those features.
Legacy Nest owner
Upgrade cautiously. The redesigned app supports important older Nest products, but verify the exact controls, historical-video access and migration status of each device before depending on it.
Privacy-conscious household
Wait or limit the rollout if you are uncomfortable with cloud-based interpretation of camera footage, household activity, familiar people or pet information. More useful context also means more sensitive home data is being analysed.

If you already pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra, Google says Google Home Premium is included. That can make the advanced Home features easier to justify, although compatible hardware and regional availability still apply.
New Google Home buyer
Buy for the underlying hardware and integration first, not merely for the “AI” label. Confirm Google Home compatibility, supported control actions, hub requirements, manufacturer subscriptions and whether the device remains useful if you later leave Google’s ecosystem.
Quick Recap
The main trade-offs
- Convenience versus predictability: Natural-language control reduces setup friction, but ambiguous requests can be misunderstood.
- Intelligence versus privacy: Camera summaries and household context add value while increasing the sensitivity of the information being interpreted.
- One app versus migration complexity: The redesign reduces app switching, but legacy Nest parity is not universal.
- Subscription value versus basic functionality: Premium makes more sense for active camera users than for homes with only simple lights and plugs.
- Ecosystem convenience versus lock-in: Google Home can coordinate third-party products, but the deepest experience generally depends on well-supported integrations.
