If your battery-powered Ring doorbell needs recharging too often, change Motion Frequency. In the Ring app, open your doorbell, choose Motion Settings → Motion Frequency, then select Regularly as the starting point. Choose Periodically for maximum battery saving, but understand that the longer pause after each motion alert can cause the doorbell to miss a second event.
This setting does not increase the battery’s physical capacity. It reduces how soon the doorbell checks for another motion event after an alert. Ring describes the three options as different compromises between responsiveness and battery life; it does not guarantee a fixed percentage or number of extra days. Ring’s Motion Detection guidance explains the settings.

What Motion Frequency does
Battery-powered Ring doorbells can use considerable power when they repeatedly detect movement, process events and record clips. A doorbell aimed at a driveway, public sidewalk, road, waving plants or a busy shared entrance may be waking up frequently even when the alerts are not useful.
Motion Frequency controls how quickly the doorbell checks for another motion event after it has already detected one:

| Setting | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Frequently | Motion detection remains active and provides the shortest battery life. | Security-sensitive entrances, busy driveways and locations where missed motion is unacceptable. |
| Regularly | The doorbell takes a short break after each motion alert, providing medium battery life. | Most homes seeking a sensible balance between coverage and charging frequency. |
| Periodically | The doorbell takes a longer break after each alert and is intended to provide maximum battery life. | Quiet entrances where battery endurance matters more than catching every closely spaced movement. |
The important trade-off is coverage versus endurance. Periodically is not a free battery upgrade: a second person, vehicle or other movement could occur during the longer detection break.
Motion Frequency is also different from Motion Sensitivity. Sensitivity affects how readily the doorbell detects movement. Frequency affects how often it checks for motion after an alert. Reducing sensitivity too aggressively can make the doorbell miss relevant activity, while changing Frequency mainly changes the recovery interval.

Which setting should you choose?
Choose Regularly for most front doors
Regularly is the best first change for a typical front porch or moderately active entrance. It can reduce unnecessary repeated motion checks without deliberately creating the longest blind period. Leave other settings unchanged initially so you can judge whether this one adjustment helps.
Choose Periodically for maximum battery endurance
Use Periodically when the entrance is quiet, the doorbell mainly watches a front door rather than a driveway, or repeated false alerts are the main reason the battery is draining. It is less suitable for a gate, busy pavement, shared hallway or security-critical entrance because a second motion event may happen during the longer pause.

Keep Frequently when immediate coverage matters
Frequently is appropriate when the doorbell is missing important movement or when closely spaced events matter more than charging convenience. It provides the shortest battery life, so investigate false triggers and other power drains rather than assuming the setting is wrong.
Reduce the motion that is causing the drain
Motion Frequency changes what happens after an alert; it does not prevent the initial alert. If a road, sidewalk, neighboring property, flag or tree is repeatedly triggering the camera, adjust the source of the problem as well.
- Tighten Motion Zones: cover the approach, steps or doorway that matters and exclude irrelevant areas where possible.
- Reduce Motion Sensitivity: make a small adjustment if the doorbell is reacting to insignificant movement, then verify that people and vehicles are still detected.
- Re-angle the doorbell: aim it away from busy traffic, reflective surfaces and constantly moving vegetation when the installation allows.
- Review Event History: identify whether traffic, animals, weather or plants are generating repeated events.
- Review linked devices: unlink unnecessary devices if linked events are contributing to activity or power use.
Ring recommends adjusting sensitivity, Motion Zones, Motion Frequency, device direction and linked devices when battery performance is poor. These changes are recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every model or installation.

Check other battery-consuming features
Motion Frequency may not be the main cause of rapid drain. In the Ring app, use Device Settings → Power Settings → Feature Power Usage where available instead of guessing.
- Snapshot Capture: reduce its capture frequency if periodic snapshots are unnecessary.
- Live View: frequent manual viewing uses more power than leaving the doorbell in passive monitoring.
- Video recording length: on compatible models and plans, longer recordings can use more power.
- Advanced Motion Detection: adjust or disable it only if appropriate for your model and use case; doing so may change detection behavior or available features.
See Ring’s guidance on low-battery notifications and Feature Power Usage and its information on adjusting video recording length.

Temperature, unusual activity, Wi-Fi reconnects, Live View sessions and weather can distort a short comparison. Ring does not publish a universal battery-life multiplier for Motion Frequency, so claims that it will double battery life are not guarantees.
If the Ring doorbell still drains quickly
Rapid drain despite little motion usually points to another factor. Check the following:
- Wi-Fi: open Device Health and check signal quality. Repeated reconnects or a weak connection can increase power use.
- Temperature: cold conditions can reduce battery performance. Avoid treating a seasonal decline as proof that Motion Frequency failed.
- Charging equipment: test the outlet, cable and adapter with compatible equipment. Ring says charging can take up to 10 hours depending on the device, battery, charger and conditions.
- Battery seating: if your model has a removable pack, ensure it clicks fully into place and that the percentage updates after reinsertion.
- Battery age or damage: an aging or defective battery may lose charge quickly even with efficient settings.
- Installation type: some Ring doorbells have removable packs, while others have built-in batteries or different charging arrangements. Do not assume every model can be charged or replaced in the same way.
Ring low-battery notifications for battery-operated cameras and doorbells are triggered below 30%; this does not apply to Ring Alarm. Check the exact model’s support documentation before buying a replacement battery or power accessory.

When solar power, a spare battery or hardwiring makes sense
Change the free settings first: Motion Frequency, Motion Zones and Feature Power Usage. If the location is inherently high-traffic or the doorbell is difficult to recharge, hardware may be the more practical answer.
- Solar accessory: suitable only for supported models and installations with dependable sunlight. Shade, tree cover, orientation and weather affect results. Ring says its Solar Charger and Solar Panel are intended to extend battery life and reduce manual charging, not eliminate it in every installation.
- Spare compatible battery: useful for models with removable or Quick Release Battery Packs because one pack can charge while the other is installed. Check compatibility with the exact model; do not substitute a generic battery based only on voltage or connector type.
- Hardwired or plug-in power: appropriate where the model, transformer, wiring and property allow it. Hardwiring is not the same as making a battery more efficient, and it does not apply to every doorbell. Follow model-specific installation instructions or use a qualified installer. Ring lists model and power-option information in its Battery Doorbell support pages.
Best Motion Frequency by situation
| Situation | Starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet porch with few alerts | Periodically | Verify that deliveries and visitors are still detected. |
| Normal residential front door | Regularly | Compare battery percentage and missed events over several days. |
| Busy driveway or gate | Frequently | Tighten Motion Zones before accepting a longer charging cycle. |
| False alerts from traffic or trees | Regularly first | Narrow zones, reduce sensitivity and re-angle the device. |
| Important motion is being missed | Frequently | Review zones, sensitivity, Wi-Fi and Event History. |
| Fast drain despite low activity | Any suitable setting | Inspect Wi-Fi, temperature, battery health, charging and Feature Power Usage. |
The practical answer
For most battery-powered Ring doorbells, change Motion Frequency from Frequently to Regularly, then narrow the Motion Zones that generate unnecessary alerts. Use Periodically only when maximum battery life is more important than catching every closely spaced motion event. The setting can reduce wasteful activity, but Ring does not promise a specific percentage improvement, and it cannot compensate for poor Wi-Fi, a failing battery, cold weather or excessive Live View use.
