This DIY Antenna Gets Local TV With One Common Household Item—But There’s a Catch

A spare coaxial cable may receive local over-the-air TV, but this no-cost experiment requires tools and favorable signal conditions. Here’s how to build, scan, position, and troubleshoot it.

The household item is a spare coaxial cable. By exposing parts of its braided shield and center conductor, you can make a rudimentary passive antenna that may pick up some local over-the-air channels. It is a legitimate experiment, but not a guaranteed replacement for a proper indoor antenna—and it requires a utility knife, cutters, and pliers in addition to the cable.

Reception depends heavily on your location, tower direction, building materials, and antenna placement. Treat this as a no-cost test for strong nearby signals, not as a measured long-range or “HD” antenna.

What you need

  • About 2–3 feet of spare 75-ohm coaxial cable
  • An intact F-type connector on one end
  • A utility knife or box cutter
  • Wire cutters or diagonal cutters
  • Pliers
  • A television with a built-in antenna tuner

Use only an ordinary, disconnected cable. Do not use a cable connected to a cable-company outlet, satellite system, powered antenna, amplifier, modem, or anything connected to mains electricity. The coaxial cable is normally used to carry radio-frequency signals between equipment; this project repurposes exposed sections of its conductors as receiving elements.

Mount the antenna high, near a window facing local broadcast towers (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels), to avoid obstacles and interference. Actual Reception depends on location, terrain, and weather, always re-scan for channels after moving the antenna. If you have any issues, please contact us. We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.

How to make the coax-cable antenna

  1. Cut the cable. Leave the F connector attached to one end and cut the cable to roughly 2–3 feet.
  2. Strip the first section. About 2 inches from the cut end, carefully score the outer plastic jacket. Remove the jacket and pull the braided shield back into a pigtail.
  3. Expose the center conductor. Make a second careful cut through the inner dielectric insulation. Remove enough insulation to expose approximately 1½ inches of the copper center conductor.
  4. Expose another braid section. About 1 foot from the end that will remain connected to the TV, make two cuts approximately ½ inch apart. Remove that short section of outer jacket so the braid is exposed.
  5. Shape the conductor. Bend the exposed center conductor into a hook.
  6. Join the elements. Hook or crimp the center conductor against the exposed braid section as described in the source procedure. Avoid creating unintended contact elsewhere along the cable.
  7. Protect the assembly. Keep the exposed metal away from people, pets, metal objects, and electrical wiring. Do not install this improvised antenna outdoors or near utility lines.

Strip slowly: the braided shield and center conductor can be sharp, and cutting too deeply can damage the conductors. Work away from your hands and eyes.

Connect it and run the correct channel scan

  1. Screw the intact F connector into the television’s antenna or coaxial input.
  2. Open the TV’s channel or tuner setup.
  3. Choose Antenna, Air, or Broadcast mode—not Cable.
  4. Select Auto Scan, Auto Program, or Channel Search.
  5. Let the scan finish, then test the channels that appear.

Menu labels vary by manufacturer. A cable scan searches for a different type of signal and can return no useful channels when an antenna is connected. Channel Master’s troubleshooting guidance identifies the wrong scan mode as a common cause of failed antenna setup.

On a Roku TV, antenna channels are configured through the Live TV setup. Roku says that changing the ZIP code may require setting up the Live TV input again and rescanning over-the-air channels.

  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

What channels might it receive?

Depending on your location, an antenna may receive local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, CW, MyNetworkTV, independent stations, and multicast subchannels. That does not mean this DIY version will receive all of them.

Use AntennaWeb to investigate nearby transmitters, their directions, RF channels, and the type of antenna your location may require. A station can be geographically nearby yet difficult to receive because of terrain, buildings, trees, coated windows, or the station’s frequency band.

Judge the result by more than the scan count:

  • Detected channel: The tuner found a signal.
  • Stable picture: The signal remains strong and clean enough for sustained viewing.
  • Reliable setup: Reception continues under normal household and weather conditions.
  • Complete lineup: The stations you actually want are available.

A DIY antenna can find channels while still producing pixelation, audio dropouts, or intermittent reception.

Where to place it

Try locations in this order:

  1. Near an upstairs window, if available.
  2. On a wall facing the likely broadcast towers.
  3. As high as practical indoors.
  4. Away from the back of the TV, routers, power strips, LED lighting, and other electronics.
  5. In several different orientations and positions.

Move it a few inches at a time and rescan after meaningful changes. Height, tower direction, obstructions, and cable length all affect reception. Metal screens, reflective window coatings, concrete, foil-backed insulation, mountains, valleys, power lines, and household electronics can all make indoor reception worse. Tablo’s placement guidance provides additional details.

When this experiment makes sense

Try it if you already have spare coax, live relatively close to local transmitters, need only a few strong stations, or want a temporary or educational project. It is especially worth testing when you can place the cable near a window with a clear direction toward the towers.

It is a poor choice when you need dependable reception for daily viewing, live sports, or emergency news; live far from transmitters; have concrete or metal construction; need stations from several directions; or know that the desired stations are difficult to receive. A short or damaged cable is also a poor starting point.

Troubleshooting

No channels found

  • Confirm the TV is set to Antenna/Air/Broadcast, not Cable.
  • Make sure the connector is fully tightened.
  • Check that the exposed conductors are joined as intended and are not touching elsewhere.
  • Move the antenna near a window or higher on the wall.
  • Run a fresh scan after each substantial placement change.
  • Confirm that the television has a built-in tuner.

Channels appear but pixelate

  • Move and rotate the cable gradually.
  • Separate it from routers, LED lights, power cables, and other electronics.
  • Try a window facing the transmitter direction.
  • Remove unnecessary coax length between the antenna and TV.
  • Rescan after improving its position.

An amplifier is not a universal fix. It can help in some installations, but it cannot correct a badly positioned antenna and may worsen overload or interference.

Only some networks appear

Stations may use different RF bands, transmit from different directions, or be affected differently by the building. The improvised geometry may work acceptably for some signals and poorly for others. Do not assume that one missing network proves the TV or scan is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The television has no antenna input

A streaming box alone cannot convert a raw antenna signal into television channels. You need a display with a tuner or a separate TV tuner. For multiple televisions, splitting a passive antenna signal requires suitable splitters, enough signal, and additional coax.

DIY cable versus a proper antenna

If the experiment produces only a few channels or requires constant repositioning, a purpose-built indoor antenna is usually the more sensible next step. Products such as the Channel Master FLATenna and Mohu indoor antennas provide a dedicated design, standard coax connection, and manufacturer setup guidance. Their stated coverage is not a guarantee for every home; placement and local conditions still matter.

For distant or obstructed signals, an attic or outdoor antenna may be more appropriate. Examples include the Channel Master Pro-Model and Antennas Direct ClearStream 4MAX. Outdoor installations introduce mounting, grounding, weatherproofing, and lightning-safety requirements, so they are not simply larger versions of this indoor experiment.

If the best antenna location is far from the television—or several screens need access—a network tuner can be useful. Tablo says its systems can distribute antenna video over a home network and support DVR-related features, depending on the specific product. A network tuner improves placement flexibility; it cannot create channels that the antenna cannot receive. See Tablo’s product information and its antenna specifications for current details.
